Braves Dissent Of The Day ... We Are Apparently Bourgeoisie Swine

I one hundred percent love way that Grant at McCovey Chronicles blogs, even when he insults you it's hilarious. I only wish I had one tenth the crazy humorous writing ability that he has. One of the things I will enjoy most about this Braves - Giants series is reading his daily rabble. Here is his latest:

My distaste for the Braves is rooted in a couple of things:

They’ve been good for several decades now. When their franchise-type catcher gets old, they put an ad on Craigslist and get another one within a week. When they give a big deal to an ex-Oakland ace, it works out. When they get rid of Andruw Jones, he craters. When they keep Chipper Jones, he just puts up fantastic season after fantastic season. They’ve had two seasons under .500 in the past twenty years. Seriously, that’s a bunch of nonsense. What a bunch of bourgeoisie swine. Spread it around, you jackals.

He goes on to list what he sees as his most annoying Braves of the past 20 years, reserving a special spot at number-7 for ... wait for it ... Melvin Nieves. Even if Braves fans have forgotten that name, Grant has not. Nieves was the "key piece" of likely the most important trade deadline deal ever when we flipped him and two other neveramountedtoanything prospects for the Crime Dog in 1993 -- then caught the Giants to win the NL West, despite San Fran winning 103 games. That crazy race had a lot to do with the creation of the Wild Card ... the next year. That probably just makes Giants fans even more bitter.

Or maybe they're bitter because the four times they've made the playoffs since the Wild Card came into existence, they've been beaten by the Wild Card team each time.

1997:  Lost NLDS to Marlins
2000:  Lost NLDS to Mets
2002:  Lost World Series to Angels
2003:  Lost NLDS to Marlins

Three times the team they lost to has won the World Series.

The Tomahawk Chop. Remember when everyone was up in arms about the vuvuzela noise in the World Cup? So, so annoying. Yet I would rather listen to someone hum the melody to “Mambo No. 5” on a vuvuzela for seventeen hours straight while I tried to pass a kidney stone in the back of a garbage truck that had video of Scott Speizio’s home run in 2002 on a non-stop loop while my feet were in Kleenex boxes filled with tarantulas and A.J. Pierzynski’s toenail clippings if it meant that I didn’t have to listen to the Tomahawk Chop one more time. Truth. I would allow players to gamble openly between innings if it meant the Tomahawk Chop would go away. It’s like the worst humanity has to offer, condensed into one awful bouillon cube of awful.

Damn, people do hate them some lovable Braves. People exist who hate Lemke? Seriously? I can understand the dislike for players like John Rocker, Deion, and Dave Justice. But so many of those others are just nondescript with little personality. It’s not like we had a team of A-rods. Or as frozendesert said, Barry Bonds.

It’s kind of like the hate I have for Roy Halladay. The dude is amazingly talented, and by all accounts, an extremely nice guy. But, my God, would my life (not his life, my life) be better if:

a) He had never made it out of the minors
b) If he had lost his arm in a farm accident
c) If he got called as a General Authority of the LDS church (as he is Mormon) and therefore could not play baseball ever again (preferably before the NLCS)
d) If he died in a fire
e) etc…

I hate the Phillies so much...

by frozendesert on Oct 7, 2010 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

the origins of hate

I was thinking more on this and talking with a friend and Braves fan. We sort of agree that we tend to “hate” players who:

- Have dickish, douchey, whatever personalities (Barry Bonds)
- Receive a ton of media attention (Derek Jeter)
- Do cheating or suspicious things (Kent Hrbek)

We don’t tend to dislike players who just make good plays against my team. Mariano Rivera is a good example of this. We just can’t bring myself to hate the guy. We hate his team, his owning family, his teammates, and his stereotypical fans. But not he.

Upon reflection, I can think of one player I dislike based on one play he made against the Braves: Jim Leyritz.

by softbatch on Oct 7, 2010 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I would add though that although we can respect a player, I find myself actively rooting for such things as abysmal performance or injury.

Strongest Braves team of the run.

Glavine, Maddux, Smoltz and Avery, in his last great season, plus a lineup that included Justice, Gant and Fred McGriff. Best pennant race of the 2 division era.

My current bone-deep loathing of the Phillies originated with that bunch of grimy, bemulletted assholes. I will always have a place in my heart for Joe Carter and Cito Gaston for saving the world from the squalid spectacle of a World Series parade featuring Dykstra, Darren Daulton and John Kruk.

It's presumptuous of me to say this

But blogging and internet geeking seems more prevalent in the Pacific/Pacific Northwest. I look at the SBN blogs for the Giants, A’s, and Mariners, and they all have gigantic readerships, full of intelligent, debate-enjoying, albeit often smarmy and arrogant at time members.

Personally, I think ragging on other teams’ blogs based on solely their comment count is about as cool of a thing to do as Limp Bizkit, but if they want to feel superior over us as much as possible, to each their own.

Depends

If someone who signed up a day ago, and is making umbrella statements about the community as a whole, then it’s nice to somewhat verify the absurdity of it. That could also be chalked up as a stupid statement, too, however. Granted, nine times out of ten, when called out, such people always claim that they’ve “been around for years, but never signed up,” but it’s the discretion of the reader on whether or not they’re believed.

I'm not saying they're all arrogant dotcom nerds

And I agree, there are plenty of posters on the aforementioned sites who write a lot of great things, as well as the decent quality of writing from their staffs. But poking fun at the sites themselves and their user bases seems kind of petty, to me.

Regardless, I try not to make that big of a habit of really concerning myself with what goes at the current opposition’s SBN site. It’s often times time consuming enough combing through our own threads, let alone the quadruplicate contributions of that of a McC. But honestly, most of the time, I just don’t really care of what the McCs, TGPs, and AAs general consensuses of TC and the Atlanta Braves are, but it doesn’t mean I can’t respect and admire some of the intellects and writers of our oppositions’ sites.

Names that failed to make his list: Rocker, Wohlers, Gant and McGriff (though these last two were probably an accident).
Should Have Been Honorable Mention: William Eckert – baseball commissioner when the Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta… and yet stayed in the NL Western division.
Names that DID make the list: Mike Hampton?? Seriously?? Maybe only because two other teams paid the Braves so that he could occupy a roster spot.

This is awesome.

From TheLetter2:

Meanwhile, on a scratchy phone line somewhere in San Francisco

He picked up on the third ring. "Zeets! What’s up?"

 "I’m off the roster."

Hudson rubbed his forehead. "What?"

"The postseason roster," Zito said. "I’m not on it. Boch told me this afternoon."

Hudson closed his eyes. "Christ, Barry. I’m sorry."

"Yeah." Zito’s plaintive reply broke Hudson’s heart. How had two of the Big Three fallen so far, so quickly?

"I’ve been tryin’ my best, you know that," Zito said.

"I know you have." Hudson sighed, shifted the phone from one ear to the other. "Look, I’m sure it isn’t personal. Maybe they just wanted to give Bumgarner a shot." The words immediately rang false, even to his own ears.

There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Finally, a bitter laugh escaped Zito’s mouth. "Oakland seems like a hundred years ago, doesn’t it, Huddy? Maybe I should hook up with Mulder and work on my golf swing. God knows I won’t be much use around here."

Hudson winced. "Don’t say that."

Another pause. "You’re gonna do good for ’em," Zito said. "But you know I can’t root for you."

"I know." Hudson bit his lower lip. "Listen, if you want, we could have lunch or somethin’ while I’m in town. Catch up a little or whatever. We don’t have to talk baseball or anything."

"I think I’m going to stay close to home this weekend," Zito said. "But thanks."

"Okay," Hudson replied. "But, y’know, if you change your mind or something…"

"Yeah, yeah. I’ll call you," Zito said, though he knew he wouldn’t do any such thing.

"I really am sorry about the roster thing."

"Eh, gives me time to work on my paddleball skills."

 "Heh. I guess."

"I better let you go. You’ve got stuff to do."

 "It can wait."

"No, it can’t. Go out there and do what they pay you do, Huddy. I’ll catch you later. Bye."

"Bye, Zito," Hudson replied, but the phone line had already gone dead.

People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

I cried a little.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." A. Bartlett Giamatti
