Braves Clinch Wild Card With Giants' Help ... Now We Must Face The Giants

The Giants helped us (and them) avoid multiple playoff games, and now the Atlanta Braves will face the Giants on Thursday to open the POSTSEASON. Seems rather improbable after watching this Braves team for the past month. Our rotation is set with a Lowe, Hudson, Hanson top-three. Anything can happen now. Let's hope it's more Braves' wins than Braves' losses.
Moylan-led celebration here. On-field celebration with Bobby dancing, yes Bobby dancing, here. (thanks to Zach Klein).

You know, this IS a wild card team.
With the guys we have now, we really don’t have any business being in the playoffs.
But for Bobby, we did it, and now we have a 1/8th chance at the World Series.

"IN THE AIR LEFT FIELD- THAT'LL DO IT!... AND IT KEEPS ON GOING; THAT IS A HOMERUN!"
I just read the game recap at TGP...
…it’s really, really nasty. I can’t fathom the level of irreverence and viciousness TGP crowd has (or why there seems to be so much hatred of Cox and the Braves..) and I’ve never seen it in any of the places I’ve seen games. I’m not quick to stereotype but the Phillies fans seem to think winning four in a row earns you the right to be an unwavering asshole in all ways.

maybe...
…but people aren’t just born that way. It’s nothing but gloating over any and everything bad for Atlanta and dismissal of any and all accomplishment. It’s obnoxious and childish. How are they going to act when their run ends? Genocidal meltdowns in Philly?

my bad...
I didnt want to turn this inot an anti Phillies thread. From what I’ve read all but one of their writers are pretty good (at TGP) and there is a mix between reasonalbe fans, and those with their heads up their ass (like every other SBN blog). Write what you want about them, but keep it in this blog, dont go trolling over there.
trolling is for angry children
I was just taken aback by how much venom there was, especially considering the lack of bad history between the Braves and Phillies. I’d expect it between the Red Sox and Yanks. Oh well.

The recap wasn't nasty
Some of the comments were nasty though. They were started by some Braves fan who went over there commanding them to respect Bobby, so its not really surprising why they’d be pissed.
I’m just going to refrain from saying anything bad about any teams’ fans. I don’t think I believe in the “jinxing” thing, but I do believe in karma and people who troll on other boards or say nasty shit to other posters might get what’s coming to them.
they sure were quick to throw out race
though when I made fun of the person who puked on the child and the off duty officer. Apparently they don’t accept that their fans, at least the ones that grab national attention, are douches.

Guys who have been here since the year after the run ended. They finally get to experience the playoffs.
There are a lot of young players on the team, maybe the whole winning thing will become contagious with them and they’ll carry it from year to year over the next decade, like the 90s Braves teams did.

But it isn’t five years either. We made the postseason in 2005. We made it in 2010. We went four years without an appearance in between. If you really try to count those four seasons plus this one just because we have yet to play this year’s postseason, then it’s your own fault for failing at math.

You mean your Cornhuskers are LOSING Thursday night.
"Jason Heyward was a Greek philosopher reincarnated as a baseball player." - Don Sutton
Not very likely.
I just don’t see it happening…unless Nebraska’s looking a week ahead to Texas.
I believe the Huskers have the ability to make any offense one-dimensional. The interesting part about that is that we’ll still force K-State to run the ball all game, which is their strength. It won’t be like Washington, where we forced a passing team to run all day as their NFL-bound QB went 4-for-20. Nonetheless, there are going to be third downs, and the Wildcats aren’t going to have an easy time with them.
I think Nebraska’s big advantage comes from the fact that the offense isn’t predicated on a single player’s success. K-State has one guy shouldering the load, and it’ll be easy for the Huskers to key in on him, whereas Nebraska has three players that average 75+ yards/game on the ground.
Both team’s passing attacks are pretty insignificant, but I don’t think either has shown much in that area on purpose. No need to give away the gameplan when you’re facing mediocre teams.
But, when Thursday has come to its end, I expect both of my teams will have won.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
I expect NU to win big Thursday, because if you stop DT, there’s literally no one else to make plays. UCF kept him in check for the first half, so a real defense should be able to stop him all night.
Thankfully the game is in the Little Apple. Can’t wait to flip back and forth.

Hopefully the Reds will knock out the Phillies.
Stranger things have happened. Frankly, hitting the Phils in the NLCS would be terrifying.
If you aren't scared of 2x Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels
…then you haven’t been paying attention.
I have but
if you didn’t see us almost beat Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels at the Phils with Beachy, Minor, and Hanson on the mound….then you haven’t been paying attention
"Almost" is relative
And I also saw us get embarrassed by dudes who probably won’t even be pitching for them the past couple days. I don’t see us getting past “almost” against any of the Big 3. I’d love to be wrong, but I just don’t see it.
We don't even know if they phils will be in the NLCS so
this is kind of irrelevant
Well, that was the whole point of me hoping...
That they would not in fact make it. So here’s hoping the vagaries of chance and a short series make it a Braves-Reds NLCS. That’s a very winnable matchup for us.
I think we can beat the Phils
but I already see that there is no point to continue this conversation
Apparently statistics show that the better playoff team (using season W-L) record only wins a series 60% of the time. And if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. If it’s not going to happen, it’s not going to happen. I’m not worried.
I hate the Phillies so much...
Research shows 60% it works every time.

I was at the game today
It was electric! I was sitting front row in Left/Center field and giving Shane Douche-arino hell the entire game. I almost jinxed it when I yelled to Shane: “What you are looking at the scoreboard for? It’s 8-4 you bum!”. That was the bottom of the 7th. Needless to say, they went on to score 3 runs the next inning. Alls well that ends well I say.
I also want to comment on the stupidity of the staff at Turner Field. For some reason, I wasn’t allowed to bring in my 6ft tomahawk made from cardboard and a carpet roll. Apparently, it’s cool to bring it to the first game of the season but not the last one? Whatever…..Now on to SanFran Sissy to beat up on the Giants!

they vote afterwards
and it’s close enough, that if Heyward dominates he’ll get it.
I’d settle for a Gold Glove for Heyward as a consolation though- something Posey will never get.
he can have it...
for his homer today if nothing else. But you could go with either him, Heyward, or Gabby Sanchez and could make a viable argument for either three.
Gaby is out of the question because of not getting near the playoffs, Heyward and Posey, both were main keys in their respective teams for the playoffs.

I actually have a really good feeling about the series.
the Giants are going to be home which is bad for us, but it may be bad for them too. they are going to be all kinds of jacked up playing in front of their crowd, which may not serve them well. You’ll have hitters all trying to be the man.
On our side, if our batters can show any kind of patience at the plate and make Lincecum work a bit and maybe even squeak out an early run, it will be a big blow to them.
remember, they have very little meaningful playoff experience on their roster – and basically none amongst their pitching staff. so if we can get them rattled even just a little bit, it will do a lot to help our cause.
So....
That happened
Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom
BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
When is post season roster announced?
Should be interesting. I would imagine KK, Minor, Martinez, and Saito will be left off. Does Beachy make it?
Which bench guy gets left off…Glaus?

The Braves would have went 6-1 in the regular season...
If not for two blown saves by Wagner. Remember the Renteria home run in the first week? But one of the two blown saves was thanks to some piss poor defense by Gonzo and Chipper.
by AnEternalEnigma on Oct 4, 2010 12:03 AM EDT reply actions
Wait... went 6-1? What does that mean?
Against the Giants? Yes… I think that’s what you mean…?
Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom
BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
the regular season record is kind of meaningless though
we played them so long ago that the two teams are vastly different now.
I kind of don't want to be the person to say this... and I don't want anybody to think that I'm content with just the wild card...
But if we end up losing in the first round… even being swept… I think on some level I can be happy about this season, the smiles on Bobby’s face during all the post game videos did it for me. Again, I’m not saying I want to win the whole thing any less than anybody else, I’m not ready for it to end… but if it does, now we can always remember this:

Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom
BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
100%.
I’ve been saying since the Phillies stormed the NL East that I don’t care if the Braves get completely slaughtered in the first round. I would be thrilled if they just made it.
They made it.
Anything else is a bonus.

I completely agree.
All I wanted to do was to get in and at least have a chance. Would I love for us to take advantage of this chance and go all the way? Absolutely. But I can’t say I’d really be disappointed if we were, at worst, swept out in the first round. I’ve had so much fun this season and I’m just so elated that we proved ourselves to be among the best. I think the team is really happy with that too.
yeah. I haven’t seen Bobby look this happy in a long time. He usually plays it straight-faced, as is. But you can tell that all of this is very special for him.
I hope that, somehow, despite everything (injury, critics, Syndrome, etc), we win the whole damn thing.

The entire team just seemed giddy, and as a result, so did all the fans. No one wanted to leave. I’m so glad I stayed, even though getting up for work in the morning is going to be bad.
I told you all it would be okay!
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." A. Bartlett Giamatti
Wow
I’m really jealous. Unfortunately I had to study go on TC tonight so I couldn’t stay to watch the Padres game. Must have been pretty awesome. I’m hoping we get to have another party after 11 more wins.
Baseball is like church. Many attend but few understand.
Yes, what an amazing game to see. Totally worth the two grand I spent for the weekend at the park. The only bummer was having to go straight to the airport after the game. I was dying to stay and watch the Dads choke. At least I heard the good news prior to takeoff; made the flight that much sweeter.
Hopefully I can make it back to Atlanta this weekend for the Sunday game.
Well ladies and gentleman, there is only one thing left to do:
WIN THE WHOLE FUCKIN THING!!

Go Braves.
I hate (and love) the Giants. That’s all.

Tim Hudson = bad guy!
Apparently Braves pitchers love throwing at players even during tight games and tight playoff races.

Couldn’t have said it better…Go Braves!
I wish
Chipper and Prado would have made it to the postseason party, it would have been even more fun with them. Good luck Braves, someone keep those frigging bats awake, and find our lost set up pitchers.
If you were a man I would punch you, right in the mouth.
