Braves Quote For The Day

The compliments about our newly acquired stud pitching prospect just keep rolling in, this time from Bill Ballew at Baseball America (my emphasis):

Vizcaino has a mid-90s four-seam fastball and a plus-plus curveball. He has made impressive strides with his changeup and the development of a two-seam fastball. At 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, he has solid projectability, so much so that Cashman admitted, "He's the guy that could really come back to haunt us in this trade."

I also like what he has to say about how highly thought of the "other" pitcher is in this trade:

According to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, [Mike Dunn] was coveted by the Tigers during trade talks for Curtis Granderson.

Keep those compliments coming for our prospects.

Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.

i didn’t figure it out until today, and i felt dumber once i did. For Pujols sake, how does saying a random color on your facebook page like you’ve got tourettes raise breast cancer awareness? Its like me saying “rock” to raise awareness for feline leukimia.

Long term this trade looks like a winner if those guys pan out. Short term it hurts in trading your ACE from last year though these comments makes it less of blow….I just hope Lowe can come back as a solid #2 this year..

by Hanson-Ace on Jan 8, 2010 11:05 AM EST reply actions

Having the ability to sign Glaus and Hinske and to maintain some level of financial reserves and flexibility for future opportunities likewise lessen the hurt of trading Vazquez.

by fandave on Jan 8, 2010 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

… and the fact that we got our former ACE back on a deal worth 2.5M less per year than Vaz. Assuming Huddy is healthy (and there is no reason to believe he hasn’t fully recovered from his TJ) he can and should be every bit as effective as Javy.

by bbxxj on Jan 8, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

Let's be honest...

it’s likely no one, including Javy, was gonna duplicate his season from last year.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 8, 2010 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn’t really talking about the numbers, just about how effective he will be in how many games his pitching will allow us to win, that sort of thing.

by bbxxj on Jan 8, 2010 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

I think Javy caught Braves fever. He was channeling Maddux or something. I think playing for the Yanks will cool him down.

Too bad he won’t be in the dugout hanging out with JJ and Yunel anymore.

I agree

I think if anyone could, it will be the Hansonater.

Was that the Brewers game? I think that was his first dominant start (in terms of Ks).

SF

Right after the ASB against Sanchez coming off of his no hitter.

I think the score was 11-4. It was the one where Hanson walked the pitcher to load the bases and then Winn doubled two in. He also got an unearned run when McLouth lost one in the lights. McCann was a triple short of the cycle and Loaf actually hit one out.

Good stuff.

“Oh, blow it out your ass, Cashman!! Go sign Chapman or something.”

If Lowe gets her done this year, the trade will be all Braves. Even though I still miss Javy.

I am almost as excited to read the daily farm reports than watching the big league club.

Almost.

Teheran, Viscaino an Freeman will all be very interesting to watch.

That’s the vibe I get from this trade more and more. Would anyone really complain if that happened?

by BahamaBrave on Jan 8, 2010 12:00 PM EST reply actions

Still say I like the Edgar comp...

we make a good deal for a vet, get better than expected production from them, and flip them for a handful of solid pieces to work with moving forward as they struggle in a contract year for an AL club.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 8, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Of course they wanted Dunn.

The Tigers would give their right arm to have a lefty reliever.

Is Vizcaino a better prospect than Tyler Flowers?

Very VERY good question.

by nick9314 on Jan 8, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

I’d say it’s close if Flowers can stay at catcher. If he can’t, Vizcaino is the clear winner.

by FineHamAbounds on Jan 8, 2010 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

I think Flowers is the safer one.

Regardless of position, Flowers has hit very well against higher level pitching. Vizcaino has an excellent fastball, and that usually is enough to eat up low level hitters. He’s yet to even reach Low A ball though, and he’s probably at least 4 years away from the majors. So much can happen between now and then, and there’s still a lot of development he needs to make. Vizcaino is the ultimate risk/reward type of prospect, at this point in his development it’s still 50/50 if he even reaches the majors, much less has any success.

Considering Logan came with Vasquez from Chicago

it was Jon Gilmore, Brent Lillibridge, Santos Rodriguez, and Tyler Flowers for Mike Dunn, Melky Cabrera, and Arodys Vizcaino (+ one great season out of Javy and a handful of innings out of Boone). I think that’s a pretty good deal since that is the question.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 9, 2010 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure the question was whether Arodys is a better prospect than Flowers …

by Lennox on Jan 9, 2010 3:22 AM EST up reply actions

Overall?...

they both have good upside. From our perspective, Arodys probably has a much greater upside since we can’t DH Flowers and have our C in McCann.

And again from our perspective, we didn’t swap those two straight up. We swapped them with others involved—Gilmore, Lillibridge, Rodriguez, Cabrera, and Dunn (and $500,000).

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 9, 2010 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

The other players in the deal? The only one with any potential is Rodriguez (thought I wouldn’t bet on him or anything at this point). Melky? Easy to replace a 4th OFer who makes $3 MM. Dunn? A LOOGy type that hasn’t shown that he can pitch in the majors. None of them really matter. Flowers and Vizcaino look to be the potential impact players involved.

As for their value as prospects, one hasn’t pitched above short season A ball, the other finished at AAA last year, and has been a really good hitter each season in the minors. If Arodys does have more upside, then certainly Flowers must be considered a safer bet.

Also, this team has been looking for an affordable RH power bat to balance out our lineup for years now. If he’s a catcher, he’s a potential all-star level bat, but if he’s moved to another position he still certainly fills that need for us on a long term basis.

by Lennox on Jan 10, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

I think Dunn could be more.

I think he could eventually be a setup-level pitcher. He’s ptiched very well in the high minors at a young age.

Show of hands, who heard of Vizcaino before the trade happened? Come on, you don’t need to pretend. I’ll admit I didn’t.

by bigjoe on Jan 8, 2010 7:38 PM EST reply actions

How many Braves fans had heard of Neftali Feliz before the that trade?

by gondeee on Jan 8, 2010 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

The hardcores. People were pissed we gave him up in the first place. We got even more pissed last season when we gave up Santos Rodriguez too.

by bigjoe on Jan 8, 2010 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Huh?...

Santos Rodriguez is a few months older than Feliz. They were both in rookie ball for us in 07 (SR in the GCL, Feliz at Danville). Feliz is a candidate for rookie of the year after 39 Ks in 31 innings vs. 13 hits and 8 walks at the major league level last year. Rodriguez last year, finally got his first 4 innings of A league actions.
