Braves Agree to Terms with Peter Moylan on a One-Year Contract

The Braves have agreed to terms with side-arming Australian reliever Peter Moylan on a one-year contract, thus avoiding arbitration. Moylan was the last arbitration-eligible Braves player. Mark Bowman reports the deal is worth $1.15 million -- a very reasonable price for a valuable setup man.

Bowman also reports that the Pirates have claimed outfielder Brandon Jones, whom the Braves DFA'ed to make room for Eric Hinske on the 40-man roster. That's a good situation for Brandon to be in, he should be of some use on that team.

It is so nice to be a Braves fan today rather than a Mets fan…the news has been nothing but good for us for quite some time now, while the NYM news is very depressing.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I am glad Omar is not our GM.

Like this move a lot

was worried about Pete going to arb.. just something that is good to avoid.

Woah, no KC for BJones?!? okay…

Didn’t PIT have a worse record than KC? So even if KC made a claim PIT’s woul have won out? Not entirely sure how it works because they said on MLBTR WSH had a claim on him too

FAIL

MLBTR said Washington was the only team with the OPPORTUNITY to put in a claim ahead of the Pirates. They didn’t, but Pittsburgh did, meaning 27 other teams didn’t even have a shot at him.

by J-Freak on Jan 19, 2010 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

The waiver process...

…gives the NL first shot over the AL. The Royals couldn’t claim him unless the entire NL passed. The Nats had first shot with the worst record in the NL. The Pirates were second.

It took a year and a half, but Swagga is finally going to Pittsburgh. Remember, he was supposed to be the big return in the deal that would have sent Jason Bay to Atlanta.

damn, just damn....

talk about some bad deals. Have the Pirates gotten ANYTHING worth while outside of Charlie Morton and Andy LaRoche in their last several deals?

Yes.

Tim Alderson immediately pops to mind. I thought that was a pretty stunning return for Freddy Sanchez. Looking at some of their transactions…Getting Iwamura was good for them, since they were actually willing to take on the payroll to have a Major Leaguer…You’d like to think Kevin Hart and Jose Acanio will be decent out of the pen, but they were basically traded for nothing, so if they get nothing out of them it’s pretty break even…Getting Jeff Clement was big, he’s a very good hitter, and they got three young arms with him who are at least probably better than the guys that were already with the Pirates…They got hosed for Adam LaRoche, Argenis Diaz is a great defender who will never hit and Hunter Strickland is a AAA pitcher…They got nothing for Eric Hinske…

I think the real problem is that they just haven’t had anything worth trading. We all love Adam LaRoche, but there are serious knocks on him and we saw that this offseason. Jack Wilson is a great player and a great teammate, but he’s far from a great hitter. Freddy Sanchez’s entire value is wrapped up in batting average. Ian Snell and Tom Gorzelanny sucked. John Grabow is a dime a dozen lefty. Eric Hinske is just a bench player. If they really had parts worth getting something in return, they wouldn’t be as bad as they continually are.

I will say getting John Raynor in the Rule 5 draft was very good, he’s Major League ready and a real burner at the top of the order.

Oh hell yeah. I love Moylan!!

Well deserved for all the times he was called upon..especially having come off TJ surgery the year before.

Hopefully this guy continues to perform cause I want to see him in a Braves uniform for years to come.

I was right on with the arbitration prediction range from $1,000,000-1.35 Million. But $1.15 million sounds about right. I hope Moylan does well again this season. We love the Aussie from Down Under.

Pittsburgh

The problem with pittsburgh isn’t that they don’t get value in their trades…it is that they are forced to trade too often..and trade from a position of weakness. Keep in mind that if you have strong core of a team these deadline deals don’t have to pay huge dividends…but fill the holes. In the past they have had luck getting Brian Giles from the Indians…and then flipping Giles to the Padres for Bay and Perez.

As for Brandon Jones…don’ they have a glut of OFers? Not to say they are quality..but they are going to have a number of guys.

Not usually. He was visiting a college that he once attended. I work there. We had a framed pic of him and asked him to sign it. Me and him went off to the side, but a bunch of local photographers followed us over and took pics of it.

anyone else think he would’ve been at least as good, if not better, than Prado alone when serving in a platoon with Odarp?

by GoBravesNY on Jan 19, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

I’m all for getting him, I’m very wary of a Prado decline. I don’t know if O-Dog is worth being an everyday starter anymore, that point is debatable, but the insurance would be great and no I don’t think a platoon of those two would be worse than Prado alone. In fact I’m fairly certain it would be better. He’d have to come cheap, of course. I’d roll the dice on him for 2-3M, but anything more is not a frugal use of resources.

Yes, definitely a good dude. I got to hang with him a little when he came to DC in September with LA cause Eric Crozier, who he played with in Toronto, and who is from my area, happened to show up at the game, so I got to stand around and listen to them shoot the shit for 20 minutes. He’s definitely one of those guys if somebody said “pick one Major Leaguer to hang out with for a day” that you’d have to have near the top of your list.

Brandon Jones has a better shot at playing time in Pittsburgh than he would have here. Good luck to him.

And as for Moylan coming in at $1.15MM, only one response to that: HELL YEAH. He will once again be one of the most valuable relievers in baseball.

A true gem of a deal, Moylan is key to bullpen success in 2010

Man what a steal for a guy that made 87 relief app for us and was the best bullpen pitcher in either league after the all-star break and especially the last two mths of the season. Moylan is key to the Braves bullpen and him not being used as much this season would be a welcomed site for me, I just want him to not have to have another TJ surgery due to being overused. Hopefully Saito and Wagner can stay healthy b/c if they both go down look for Moylan to assume the closers role in ATL until one of them returns.

$1.15 million a bargain at twice the price for sure, great deal for us .

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Jan 19, 2010 9:19 PM EST reply actions

Well, you said a partial reason why I think Atlanta got a pretty good bargain: 87 relief appearances coming off of TJ surgery. But yeah, I’m stoked about him being on board for that (relatively) insignificant chunk of money.

Maybe old news, but

am I to assume that the front office went back on their vow to never negotiate with the Wasserman Media Group? Had Moylan changed agents? Regardless, I am very pleased.

by poormrtoad on Jan 20, 2010 10:41 AM EST reply actions

They could have negotiated with Peter directly. I don’t know though.

My guess (and that’s all it is) is that since Petey was on the team before the Furcal debacle, they made an exception for him rather than ship him, a highly valuable and well-liked piece of the team, out of town because they were pissed at his agents. To the best of my knowledge though we haven’t signed any new Wasserman clients, so my bet is that any clients of theirs that were already on the team are safe, but there won’t be any newcomers from that agency.

by J-Freak on Jan 20, 2010 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Esco is a client, yes?

Sure hope it doesn’t screw any future negotiations with him.

by ATLforlife on Jan 21, 2010 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure why we haven’t looked the aussie up for a couple years by now. The man has been our best and most consistent pen arm for a while. He gets overworked every year but still manages a very productive stat line. I believe he has 2 more years of arb left. I say we give him a multi-year deal within that time period. Maybe with the help we have out there this year and the multiple arms Bobby trusts, it won’t be the same 3 or 4 guys every night and FW will see his value to our pen. Plus the man is going to need a few more bucks than the deal we gave him to cover his entire body in ink.

by JKowalek on Jan 20, 2010 2:29 PM EST reply actions

Because he's already blown his arm out once and could do it again...

true

and especially with the stockpiles of relievers we have coming up, I think its fine we didn’t get him long term, although I would’ve liked to get him until 2011.

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all. ~Earl Weaver

by GoBravesNY on Jan 20, 2010 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

If you can help it, you just don’t lock up relievers. Think about the outstanding work he’s done and how little the team has had to pay him for it. Even if he all of the sudden went to crap this year and they had to cut him next offseason, they still would have gotten more value out of him over his Braves tenure than they paid for. It’s not fair to him, but that’s the process, constantly trying to stay ahead of having to pay for the value you’re getting.
