Braves and Melky Cabrera avoid arbitration with one-year, $3.1 mil deal.
The news per Mark Bowman
Seems like a reasonable amount, I thought he would make somewhere closer to $4 million. That leaves Peter Moylan as our only unsigned player.

Bah, you beat me posting this same thing by 1 minute. If I hadn’t bothered to proofread, I coulda beat ya to it.
Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?
ha, nice

nice
he’ll be easier to trade now that he signed for cheaper.
Remember folks, I'm almost always wrong.

I was hoping he'd be about 500,000 less, similar to Diaz...
I guess the fact that he has actually played a full season, while Diaz has never been more than a platoon player, causes the increase.
WTF
Can someone please explain to me why we DFA’d Ryan Church? Church is a better than MC in practically every category and signed for $2.8 mil, while Melky is costing us $3.1 mil. Really, REALLY? That’s not even considering what we could have gotten in the trade for Vazquez if Melky wasn’t part of it. Sorry to rant, but this is a fucking joke!

Ryan Church hasn’t been healthy since his concussion. he’s always injured.

Hasn't been healthy,...
or any good actually. People can keep posting stats from 3-4 years ago, but if you paint the complete picture towards today, the drop off in his numbers is consistent and makes him pretty worthless.
I do agree with you somewhat, but to play devil’s advocate, Church was probably considered more of an injury risk than Melky, he would have made more in arbitration than Melky did, and he’s really not a center fielder, and Melky certainly has the range to play there and backup McLouth.
As I said in the post I made, we’re basically paying 2.6 million for a Gregor Blanco clone. /facepalm
Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?
Other than the fact that...
…Melky is nowhere near Gregor Blanco as a hitter, you are completely right. Given the actual facts, your argument is completely inane.
Let’s see the facts:
Blanco:
2007: .282/.369/.731 in AAA
2008: .251/.366/.309 in Majors
2009: .186/.255/.233 in Majors (48 PA)
.228/.326/.279 in AAA (397 PA)
Melky:
2007: .273/.327/.391 in Majors
2008: .249/.301/.341 in Majors
2009: .274/..336/.416 in Majors
If you think they are comparable based upon those numbers, you should check with your local mental health professional.
Hate to disagree
but 2009 was the only year Melky was considered “better”. Can’t argue with the injury history but I can say that’s the ONLY reason Melky beat him out last year.
You aren’t the czar of typographic emphasis
And Church has been getting steadily worse.
So considering he continues to decline, Melky is the better player.
You could also say that Church hasn’t been getting better for a while. Cabrera’s coming off his best season in three years.

That’s the best argument I’ve seen for the Vazquez trade being a bad trade by far.
by BravesRaleigh on Jan 14, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions
Umm...
Church is older, more injury-prone, and on the decline as a player in every way. Cabrera could certainly get better, and has already been an every-day contributor for a WS champion. Where’s that line on Church’s resume.

If Melky starts 100 games for us we’ll be fighting the Nats for last place in the division.
Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?
Not really...
Have him start 20-30 for McLouth vs. tough lefties, give Heyward 20-30 games off, add another 30-40 for Diaz against righties that match up poorly with him, and you’re right there around 100 games.
Oh god, you may be right.
Shouldn't Reid Gorecki get a shot in RF before that Heyward kid everybody talks about?
Remember...
…this guy thinks Melky is a Gregor Blanco clone, so his thoughts on the issue aren’t likely to be particularly rational.
Depends what you want, the guy who hits with more power, or the guy with plate discipline. I’ll take the guy who can recognize a walk in a bar after a few beers.
Considering his asking price seems similar to Mike Cameron's...
let’s compare what the two bring to the table. Now ask again if Johnny Damon is worth it?
If Wren does something this stupid, that “blame it on Peter Angelos” excuse for his Orioles’ tenure becomes kaput.
Mmkay, I have no idea what you’re talking about since I was talking about Gregor Blanco.
But hey, if Damon’s asking price goes down to $5 million a year, you wouldn’t take it? I’d take the guy with the OPS under .800 once in the last 6 years on my team, especially when he’s moving to the easy league.
But whatever, he’s no Melky Cabrera.
What I'm saying is...
Damon appears to be wanting a contract similar to Mike Cameron (2 yrs at $6-7 per). And he’s nowhere near worth gthe same as Cameron.
I doubt Damon has an ops in Atlanta the same as he was able to put up in the Yankees lineup. Less protection behind him likely reducing obp and the Ted vs. Yankee likely drops his slugging. He seems like a singles/doubles hitter , .280-.300, obp around .350-360, with less than 20 steals and weak D.
And no, he’s not Melky. While Damon makes more contact and takes more walks, there is no difference in power and steals, he’s worse defensively, more expensive, and unless we sign him to a multi-year deal would not be under club control next year like Melky. Plus, he wouldn’t be nearly as valuable off the bench as Cabrera could be once Schafer, Heyward, or both are ready to step into the lineup.
Damon ISO: .205 last year, .150 career
Damon SB: last year was the first of his career under 15, but wasn’t caught at all last year.
Cabrera career high ISO: .142
Has stolen as many bases each year of his career as Damon’s career low.
No difference at all!
because Damon is going to keep up his numbers
from the Yankees as he gets older, moves to a worse lineup, and less hitter friendly stadium. I’ll agree Cabrera also has the worse lineup and less hitter friendly stadium deal, but I think the lineup matters more to someone hitting 1 or 2 than someone hitting 8 or 9.
Add in defense, and both are average players overall. Just one is cheaper and much more versatile.
Damon was right at an 800 OPS away from NY last year.
No reason to think he couldn’t match or better that away from the AL East.

Or with the Phillies for first.
Neither is any more likely than the other based on your complete lack of facts.

3.1 million for Melky seems high,
but trust FW knows what he is doing ???? After-all I’m just a fan :)
