Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Our old pal John Smoltz has an 8.33 ERA and is getting crushed by any and every team. Teixeira, who faced him last night, seems to think that he is a different pitcher after his off-season surgery. We may see the BoSox move him to the pen before outright releasing him. Sad way to end.

Very Sad!

I have always respected Smoltz and when he left I was a little bitter, but no matter what happens I will always remember him in Atlanta. Good memories….

Sad indeed

It must be very difficult for great athletes to admit it when their time is up, athletically. (Brett “Farve” anyone?).

At least Smoltz can still tear it up on the links!

It truly is sad. The worst part, is that all of this embarassment could have been avoided if John could have just gotten over himself this past offseason.

Yup

It’s his own damn fault. Made his bed, crapped in it, now he gets to lie in it.

man oh man, this was a tough one to watch. Sad to see Smoltzie like this, he was certainly pissed in that dugout man. Sliders just not slidin, his fastball did hit 93, but man he got lit up.

I thought hurricane season was over........

New Yankee Stadium is a joke. Even Kotchman nailed one (good for him). But yeah, sad end to a great career of a stubborn, stubborn man.

Some athletes get it " go out on top" but the others have to get kicked out and it must be the worse time for a great athlete. With his strike outs though still coming he could be good in a relievers role but im sure thus is not what boston for saw.

funny part is, that is exactly what Frank Wren foresaw, and he was ridiculed mercilessly by the media and many posters here.

Perhaps

IIRC he did offer Smoltz a couple mil to be a back-end starter, he just got outbid. Sorta like Burnett.

Hard to give FW tons of credit for that.

by Yakker on Aug 7, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

He was willing to pay a quite a bit less for lower expectations. At least, that is how I interpreted it all.

Since the Braves’ playoff chances are basically done, it would be a nice gesture when Smoltz is released if the Braves picked him up and let him pitch his last game in an Atlanta uniform.

by redwards95 on Aug 7, 2009 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

Only if he agrees to publicly take back everything he said about the FO and say these exact words: “I was wrong. I am not as good as I thought I was. I should have never left. I have ruined my legacy of potentially playing my entire career for the Braves, and for that, I consider myself a dumb-ass.”

Actually he was completely right to take the offer of more guaranteed dollars from the Red Sawx and Wren was right not to match it. It worked out fine for both sides and there’s no reason they can’t put it behind them for a single start celebrating Smoltzie’s career and everything he’s done for the Braves.

by redwards95 on Aug 7, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Taking the offer was one thing…running his mouth about how he was “offended” etc by the FO was not Kosher though.

it seems doubtful at best the way they split up, but it would certainly be nice (if he didn’t have a start like he has in Boston). Wonder if they’d consider adding him to the bullpen, as that is where we really need the help. He’s been strong there before and maybe it could allow him to pitch a little better.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 7, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

So I guess this means he won’t go into the HOF as a Red Sock.

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

Even though I’m sad that it went out like this, I can’t help but feel a bit smug knowing that our FO made the right call, and we were justified for letting him go.

by soup du jour on Aug 7, 2009 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

I agree completely

Smoltz had a bitterness toward us for not offering him a contract that was obviously no good and I’m enjoying watching him get shelled.

Pedro on the other hand… can’t wait.

by The Keith Lockhart Era on Aug 7, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont understand people being upset about players who "chase" money and rings...

hell, i’d do it, esp at his age…the money he got from the BoSox was more than twice what we offered (iirc)…how can you blame him? And on paper before the season started, the Sox seemed as though they had a better chance at a championship than we did (hell, they still do).

Now, the unkind words he had when he left on the other hand, i see no reason not to blame him for those. But the money or rings? Can’t blame him.

by Doghnut on Aug 7, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

You’d think the tens of millions he made with the Braves would have been enough, but maybe not.

Although Smoltz (never “Smoltzie” again) said it was about “respect” not money, anyway.

by Yakker on Aug 7, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

He made what, like $120 million as a Brave?

Hate to see the DFA, but I can’t react to it with more than a shrug.

Still would be nice if he wanted to come back to the Braves and come in relief.

I went to see him vs. Texas

It was depressing. He is done. I wish he would have called it so we could have had the greatest day ever…the Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz HOF induction day. Maybe they can just pretend this year didn’t happen so they can all go in together?

by hippybustins on Aug 7, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoa

What’s with the pity party for this guy? Maybe he should go find Tommy G., crack open a few cold ones, and piss and moan about how Wren didn’t respect them.

Then flip on the tube and watch Hanson dazzle.

by Yakker on Aug 7, 2009 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

He’s done a lot for the Braves organization but the guy doesn’t know how to walk away from the game, and neither does Glavine. Instead, it’s a shame that they blame the organization for disrespecting him. Maddux is the only one who knows how to call it quits the right way.

From ESPN....

“The Boston Red Sox have designated John Smoltz for assignment, one day after the right-hander was tagged for eight runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings in a 13-6 loss to the Yankees”

by Dandrews on Aug 7, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Once he gets released, someone might pick up for the prorated minimum salary and stick him in the bullpen. Not that big of a risk, he was hitting low 90’s last night.

by Dandrews on Aug 7, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I would welcome him back with open arms..Let him retire where he should have stayed in the first place. No hard feelings.

by WeStillHaveBobby on Aug 7, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be nice for the Braves to get him for one last game….out of the blullpen would be fine.

by Southern IN Chopper on Aug 7, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

Oops

Meant “it” would be nice on my previous post.

by Southern IN Chopper on Aug 7, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going to just say this. We should seriously pick him up for a bullpen role. I think he has decent stuff to pitch at least an inning every other day..we need someone like that anyway.

by WeStillHaveBobby on Aug 7, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

To me, Smoltz will always be a Brave. No matter what.
I enjoyed watching him pitch and wouldn’t even mind seeing him in a Braves uniform again. Yeah, i said it. Not ashamed to admit that.

We all make mistakes. This was a doosy for him. I think the whole way he left and the debacle in the media is sort of like…. guys with comeovers buying corvettes. Hard to let go of your prime and he’s learning that lesson hard.

by NCChopper on Aug 7, 2009 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe

this was all mental for him. He could very well return to the Braves and regain at least some of his old form feeling right back at home.

by WeStillHaveBobby on Aug 7, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

yo so is he released? what does this mean?

by fizzbot on Aug 7, 2009 5:25 PM EDT reply actions

I guess the Sox have 10 days to trade or release him

by Sparklemotion on Aug 7, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

He’ll be placed on waivers in the next 7 days (won’t happen), or traded or released in the next ten.

Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.

by VivaLosBravos on Aug 7, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

So he is toast huh? nuts

by fizzbot on Aug 7, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

Fuck it, pick him up (we’d only have to pay the minimum) and throw him in the pen to replace Acosta and see if he can survive in the 7th inning. Why the shit not?

by bigjoe on Aug 7, 2009 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Sure

But do you really think he’d come back with his tail between his legs like that? I think Wren is a big enough man to take Smoltz back, and I bet Bobby would love to have him, but I just don’t see Smoltz coming back after getting “disrespected” like that and burning his bridges so publicly.
