Two sources said that Minor could have signed months earlier if not for interference from MLB. Minor and the Braves agreed in principle on the $2.42 million bonus before the draft—but before Atlanta received official word that the slots were reduced. The commissioner’s office pressured the Braves not to make the above-slot deal official so they wouldn’t hurt the Reds in their attempt to sign Arizona State righthander Mike Leake, the No. 8 pick, to a below-slot bonus.
Baseball America on how MLB f'ed the Mike Minor deal
How can they screw a team like this when teams like the Yankees spend $200 million on every free agent known to man. They did this same thing with the Jason Heyward signing too. Imagine what another two months of pro ball on the front end could have done for his development or major league ETA.

good point on the Heyward thing...
get him in 2 months sooner, and maybe he gets to Myrtle about mid way through last year, and is able to start the year in Mississippi or soon after the start. Basically, because of MLB, he has 200-250+ plate appearances right now instead of 100-150.
Isn't this some sort of ethics violation?
Since when can MLB determine when a team can sign a player during the allowed signing period? What business of MLB’s is it that what the Braves do may hurt other teams’ chances of signing their guys???
This is F’d up, and Atlanta should sue MLB.

In answer to your question
because bud selig sucks…
I see the point that it’s fair for the Red’s (and others) efforts to sign Leake reasonably, however, this is punishment for the Braves attemtping to work quickly and begin developing their pitcher. Bullshit…especially about Heyward. I didn’t know that…

less an affront to the Braves
than it is to Mr. Leake.
MLB screwing the Braves………that’s a new one. “lol”

Well
they F’d us on Heyward and he’s turning out to be a pretty decent prospect. Maybe Minor will do the same!

REMEMBER THAT BOYS.
You might remember the Union
and Tom Glavine when he went to the Mets. He actually had a change of heart and wanted to stay in Atlanta, but because he was getting more money in NY and the union knew that some details had leaked they made Glavine sign with NY.
was he still the spokesperson for the Union at that time?

all players are part of the union… do u mean he was the spokesman or just a regular member… because that would certainly affect the situation
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

I believe Glavine was still a spokesman/team rep at that point. I know he has been very involved in the union.
so the pressure on him to take the contract that best suites the union are slightly more dramatic than they are for an ordinary player, especially considering he is a premier player (or was).

fair enough, i overstated… Glavine has certainly been a member for his career and most are.

Yes, you’re not wrong to assume that everybody in the Majors is in the union. There are a very select few who aren’t and they’re certainly the exception.

most that i know of are picket line crossers from '94
Millar was one of those…the easiest way to know is to play one of the licensed video games and check out which players werent included. That’s usually bc the licenses are with the MLBPA and the players who arent a part of the PA dont usually strike their own deals.
that would take some serious roster knowledge to figure out I think…bnut kudos to those who do it

Ron Mahay is an interesting name… and Pedro Borbon’s name made a cameo in the movie Airplane! so thats exciting.
now that is the list of the replacement players.. but are there any players who aren in the Union now and werent replacement players.
and isnt it ridiculous that the union wont let these guys in now

i dont blame them for not letting the guys in
and i couldnt find a list of other guys who didnt join, if there are any.
How did the Union make him sign a contract he didn't want to sign?
Evidence please.

That came from John Schuerholz’s book Built to Win, so I’m taking his word on it. I wouldn’t say they forced him, but nugged him probably would be the more appropriate word.
Apparently he was going to pull a Rafael Furcal, where there was an offer sheet but it was “Official,” and he was planning to renege on the deal at the last minute. The Union basically told him that, as one of the more significant free agent pitchers that year, he’d really hurt negotiations for a lot of other guys by taking a deal worth much less money.
And I believe it’s true; imagine a younger pitcher making his first big in free agency, and the agent wants a certain amount of money, the team could just respond with “Hey, you’re certainly not going to make more money than Tom Glavine. He’s in another league.”
So the union was protecting its’ interests, and they kind of screwed over Glavine and the Braves both by doing so. They can’t force a guy to sign a contract, but they can really make things miserable for him if he doesn’t.
Minor signing this late takes so much away from this pick imo. I think this pick was made for a couple of reasons: signability, future trade bait (lefty starters always havesome value until they pull a jojo reyes), and because he will probably be the second starter to reach the majors assuming strasburg signs. Taking away two months of learning and development means it’s going to take at least that much longer for him to get to the majors. And with our lack of SP at the upper levels, the sooner he was ready the better.

our lack of SP at the upper levels…. i assume u mean in the minor leagues… becuase our rotation is pretty set for a good portion of time… everyone on our roster is signed at least through next year

yes by upper levels that means AAA and AA

It would be nice to have had him in our system 2 months ago. But he gets a couple months of rest and he can pitch in the final moth por so of the season and play in the AFL and be ready to tear through the minors next year… Its over and done I hope MLB takes alook at these situations and get its act together.
by jamanningusmc on Aug 6, 2009 6:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Kid probably could have used some rest, anyway. He’s almost certainly going to be fast-tracked to the majors. They’ll almost certainly invite him to camp in 2011 to compete for a spot in the rotation, and he may end up being a midseason call up that year. He seems to aimed at making the 2012 opening day roster. That’s of course assuming everything falls into place with his health and development.
Yeah but him being with one of our coaching staffs for two months could have made a big difference. He didn’t have to log heavy innings to learn a lot
