Dealing with Ryan Howard
I'm wondering if it is time to start re-thinking the Braves current approach with Ryan Howard. In his last 4 games against the Braves, he has been able to accomplish the following:
3-3, 2HR's, 3RBI's (i.e. he won the game offesnively by himself)
3-3, 2HR's, 4RBI's (accounted for all of Philly's runs)
0-4, 1RBI (yes! we got him!)
1-3, GWHR
Another important point to consider is Howard's platoon splits this year, which are the following:
vs. RHP: .311/.389/.686
vs. LHP: .195/.279/.341
Seeing as all of our starters are RH, I really can't see any reason to continue to pitch to this guy. After Howard, Werth has been dangerous, but has an .806 OPS vs. RH compared to a 1.119 OPS against LH -- I'd much rather take my chances with him at this point. Finally, Ibanez has a .586 OPS over the last month. How many games does Howard have to win all by himself before we give someone else a chance?

They keep talking about how he likes to get his arms extended, but at the same time, they are constantly setting up on the outside corner of the plate. I think pitching inside some might be in order. Either that, or just don’t pitch to him in Philly at all.
"He’s got so much power, and this is a high school field," Braves catcher Brian McCann said of Howard
"Ohhhh Shit."-Bobby Cox, 3/28/09
That quote by BMac – says a lot about Howard’s power, but if you’re hitting in a “high school field”, it’s also a testament to our lack of it.
My high school field is actually bigger than Turner in center by 10 feet, but shorter in the corners by 5. But yea, their park is so small. We can’t keep pitching him outside.

Last night I was screaming at my TV when they kept setting up outside AFTER he already hit the first homer.
Joe was saying on the broadcast to either hit him, walk him or pitch him inside – but do NOT give him anything to extend those arms and hit. Unfortunately, Medlen gave him something to hit (another homer) and later in the game, he got another hit.
We’re handling the rest of the Phillies pretty well (they managed only 1 run that wasn’t a Howard one) and we held them to just 4 at their park which is pretty good ….but this one man is beating us. I’m flabbergasted that we continue to allow it to happen.
We should pitch to him differently. What we’re trying isn’t working. From the recap:
Howard, who leads all active players with 29 career homers against the Braves…
and
But while helping the Phillies win three of the four games these two teams have played this month, the powerful first baseman has collected five homers in a span of 13 at-bats.
In fact, the no-doubt blast that Howard produced off Medlen’s changeup gave him four homers in a span of five at-bats against the Braves.
You throw him nothing but heat....
…high and inside. Maybe you walk him, maybe it hits him, and maybe he hits it. At least we threw him something he can’t extend on and if he hits that pitch, then he deserves the hit.
This
Up and in, and down and away, off the plate.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
Way off.

Maybe we really should hit him. We need to try anything to get this team going again!

Drill his ass once, early, get a warning, get it out of the way.
If it escalates it’s just something to fire the team up. And it looks like we need it.

I remember D. Lowe absolutely owning him in the first game of the year by throwing him a steady diet of sliders… pretty much all he threw that night at Howard and it worked beautifully.

yeah i think howard has huge holes in his swing if you can resist throwing fastball strikes. I didn’t watch the game but were the homers off FB’s? The best approach is a steady diet of changes and sliders with the fastball outside the zone preferably up and in

Every homer that I can recall was off a FB.

then there’s my point, Howard should see off-speed/breaking pitches exclusively, that’s the key to minimizing his impact

i feel like bobby cox always pitches other teams big sluggers very aggressively. We handled Pujols this year by going right after him, and his teammates beat us. Now we’re going right after Howard, and literally all by himself, he is destroying us. But we’re handling the rest of the team.
It reminds me of Chipper vs the mets in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. that was a lot cooler tho
Greg Norton has 9 hits all season, for a major league baseball team

he never said anything about black people did he? I thought it was mostly about illegal immigrant mexicans, gays, 21 year old women with 5 kids from 4 different daddies and ex-cons who have been out of jail 3 or 4 times…
