We're hearing the Braves made a brief run at Victor Martinez before the deadline but didn't get very far.
Jayson Stark on something he "heard"
I'm guessing they would have moved him to first baseman? Would we have really parted with our 4-time All-Star catcher? And what would we have had to give up in return... jeesh. It's rumors like this that I have a hard time believing.

Who said anything about parting with Mac?
Martinez has played mostly 1B this year. at least half his game.
Funny
We seem to be doing just fine with Roachy.

if u really think Laroche = Vmart ur crazy
now the prize for Vmart is significantly higher.. and may not be worth the increase… Laroche makes us a contender… Vmart might have made us the favorite (although at what cost)
Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

Did I ever say they were equal? No. Try reading my comment first. It’ll help a bunch.

So wait
We tried to get LaRoche for Kotchman, failed, and then tried to V-Mart and failed, so we just went and got LaRoche for Kotchman again?
Weren’t we reportedly in discussions for some other guys? I’m starting to think that FW was discussing all the deals being “reported” after the fact, he didn’t eat or sleep for the last 6 days of the trade deadline.
I wouldn’t be surprised that Wren asked, because Martinez would’ve been an outstanding upgrade and we’dve had him for another year.
However, I’m sure the conversation started with “Is Heyward available”, followed by a quick no, then a “How about Hanson”, which then prompted Wren to hang up the phone.
Eh.
Freeman and a solid pitching prospect or two would have been a fair starting point from their perspective, I bet…
"A player who conjugates a verb in the first person singular cannot be part of the squad, he has to conjugate the verb in the first person plural. We. We want to conquer. We are going to conquer. Using the word 'I' when you're in a group makes things complicated." ~ Wanderley Luxemburgo, 1999
Perhaps true, but I’d imagine that we don’t have a solid enough pitching prospect (equivalent to Masterson) to entice them, so I think they would start with one of those two.

This makes perfect sense, would have been a great bridge to Freeman. Did you honestly think that they were doing this to put him at catcher? Medlen, Kotchman, Spruill, and 2 more minor leaguers (likely pitchers not named teheran or delgado) is probably what it would have taken. I think it’s about equal as getting LaRoche because all we gave up only Kotchman but Martinez to the Braves is perfectly legit imo

Lets stay away from the big trades for a while
We sent a TON of prospects the past 2-3 years for Tex, Javy and McLouth (even tho that trade is looking really nice right now; Gorkys strikes out like its nobodys business).
I REALLY like the guys in our system. Heyward and Freeman are going to be studs. C.J. and Milligan both have lots of potential in the outfield. Teheran, Spurill, the Delgado’s, Oberholtzer etc. are all pitchers who are all looking really good right now. Not to mention Kimbrel is really dealing since his early year struggles.
Lets hold onto our guys unless we’re trading with the Tigers or Pirates =]
