Baseball America's John Manuel gives out his personal Top 20 prospects in Baseball, part of the list that will go into making the final BA Top 100 prospect list, and he puts the Braves Jason Heyward at number 2, right behind Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg.
Kind of odd that he doesn't even have Freeman on there, especially since he was ranked 12 on BA's mid-season Top 25. His second half didn't ruin his prospect status that badly. Of course, he puts the older pitcher above the younger hitter for the first 2 spots, which is unusual since usually hitters get preference because of playing every day and having less chance of injury.

Heyward at #2? The guy that many people compare to Darryl Strawberry, who had more talent than he knew what to do with? Surprising. Maybe Manuel was trying to be different. Strasburg is nasty though.

he wouldn’t of gotten as much attention if he had of ranked Heyward number 1 like everyone else…

This.

Overheard in press box, from local reporter: 'If this Moore kid was any good, they'd be up 31-0 right now.'

Strausburg is suppose to be the next big time pitcher,

can’t really totally complain about him being #2 honestly.

The group of people who would care

Are probably the exact same group of people who would visit an Atlanta Braves blog.

Strasburg is only a couple months removed from being drafted. And considering the history of pitching prospects, he will be a bust.

by GouldisGold on Dec 26, 2009 12:37 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Just curious...

has Strasberg even pitched since he was drafted.

by Mr. Sanchez on Dec 26, 2009 9:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He pitched the AFL.

He ad a K/9 of almost 11, and had the best GB% in the league at over 65%. Very small sample size, but very comparable numbers to what he put up in the olympics. The guy is a really good pitching prospect, who cares if some writers think he’ll be a better pro tha Heyward. In the end these lists really mean nothing.

He really is good. I saw him in 08 when he was with the Olympic team playing against Canada’s team and he made a bunch of AAA fringe Major League guys look silly for 3 innings. That beings said, long term, Heyward is still going to be better. But yeah, doesn’t matter much how they rank them, BA is quite often wrong.

That piece doesn't represent the views of Baseball America

Only John Manuel.

My guess is that when BA’s real list comes out, Heyward will be #1.

You’re right, and that’s my guess too, but still, doesn’t take away the fact that BA gets stuff very wrong a lot. But, that’s the name of the game, prospects are impossible to gauge with any real accuracy.

Oh, great. I really appreciate you getting one. I hope you enjoy it. If not, feel free to tell everyone how bad it is.

I think BP is the one that doesn’t have much value. As for getting things wrong, Keith Law isn’t very good but people squeal in excitement at his every word.

Strasberg will be outstanding baring injury. He will need to work on his secondary pitches as pro hitters will not chase pitches like the college kids did. Strasberg got beat by the Cubans because they made him throw across the plate. Minor beat the Cubans twice by changing speeds and ball movement.

His secondary pitches are all 60+ right now.

I thought most people thought he would be good but not amazing. He was drafted 1st overall because he would sign quickly and for a lot less than BJ Upton. Still, never underestimate the Pirates.

I doubt it is that serious.

Most places are saying Heyward #1, Strasburg #2. He said the opposite. A complete non-story, if you ask me.

by cavebird on Dec 26, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If you think about it Strasburg was touted as the Best Pitching Prospect Ever. It would be weird if he didn’t get the top spot.

Heyward 2nd on SI’s top 20

Bobby_1_tiny by JKowalek on Dec 27, 2009 12:48 PM PST Comment 3 comments, 3 new

Here’s the article…

Why he’s here: The 2009 Minor League Player of the Year has exceptional hitting skills, making consistent, hard contact and showing impressive power. He’s evoked comparisons to Dave Parker with his overall athleticism and long, powerful frame.

What he’ll be: The Atlanta native is poised to take Chipper Jones’ mantle as the Braves’ franchise player, starting with hitting in the No. 3 hole.

When he arrives: Unless Atlanta brings in a corner outfielder this offseason, Heyward should hit his way into the lineup in 2010.
