The Braves need a right-handed power bat. Let the guessing begin!
Last year it was Peavy-gate and all the Peavy talk you could handle for a solid month or two. This season, the press hasn't really nailed down anyone to pin on the Braves but several folks are trying. Here's SI's John Heyman:
The Braves may consider going after Matt Holliday, who made a huge error in St. Louis' Game 2 loss but is the biggest star who'll hit the free-agent market. Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt has said they are going to try hard to re-sign Holliday, and other candidates appear to be the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Giants. Over the last four years, Holliday ranks second in doubles (172), fourth in batting average (.325), fifth in hits (767) and runs (440), sixth in slugging (.563) and OPS (.962) and seventh in RBIs (448).
Hey, man, speculate much? This is even more speculative than the normal speculation. There's not even an anonymous front office source, or a rival GM who "has a feeling," just a bold statement of un-fact.
Our own David O'Brien fired up the hot stove of speculation this morning with this reference to who we might go after:
Anyway, here's a name that I think will come up next week: Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz. [...] If the Braves had traded for him instead of signing Garret Anderson, hey, they'd have probably been a better team. But the same could be said for Bobby Abreu and other relatively low-cost options).
But anyway, Cruz is right-handed and hit .260 with 33 homers, 20 stolen bases and an .856 OPS in 128 games, and while his .931 OPS at hitter-friendly Arlington was a lot higher than his .778 on the road, he hit almot as many homers (15) on the road than at home (18) in virtually the same number of at-bats.
Along with speculating, O'Brien plays the what-if game in virtually the same sentence.
At this rate, by the time the World Series is over the collective baseball speculativerse will have mentioned every single right-handed power bat... and probably a few lefties as well. Tim Dierkes of MLBTR doesn't have that kind of time to just wait around, so he goes ahead and lists everyone that the Braves might even be remotely interested in. Actually, he does a good job of pointing out a whole bunch of people I hope the Braves have no interest in...
Buckle-up folks, it's going to be another long hot stove.

I just don’t see where the money is going to come from to sign Holliday. The Cardinals will be able to go to $15 million per. Their best offer will probably be 5 years $75 million. I don’t see the Braves being able to top that. Even if we somehow move Lowe’s $45 million for nothing in return it seems difficult. Bay will probably stay in Boston and he will probably resign before free agency starts. That will drive up the value of Holliday.
I think we will have to go the cheap route to find a bat.

Nelson Cruz sounds like a nice player to go after.

Matt Holliday
156G · AVG .313 · HR 24 · RBI 109 · Runs 94 · SB 14
Not to mention he plays some of the best LF defense in the league and was in a huge pitchers park in Oakland for half a year. I’d take him in a heartbeat if we can unload DLowe’s contract.

a career OBP right around .400 and an OPS a little shy of 1.000. He’s also a notorious 2nd half player and we all saw how much of a boost that brings from Roachy.
I’m not saying we have to get him, but he’s a fantastic player.

Don’t want Holliday, he made an error.
Here are Pujols's stats: 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000. That's right. He is batting a thousand, with a thousand OBP (naturally), and every hit has been a home run, and thus his OPS is a perfect 5.000.

Mediocre away from Arlington and not very good against left-handers so he’s essentially a another lefty bat

Re:
I can’t really say since this is his first full season but he is a RH power bat and he did hit 15 HR away from his home park if we can get him cheap then I’m for it. So say if we could get him for Schafer, Medlen, B. Jones and Reyes I might consider it.

The whole point of getting a right-handed power bat is to hit left-handed starters better. Cruz may be right-handed, but he hit .235/.320/.432 against lefties this year. He just wouldn’t be close to worth it between that and his home/away splits to justify the cost to acquire him.
by was385 on Oct 9, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah but
He still had a .752 OPS in only 132 AB against LHP though. That was needless to say better than any of our OF not named Matt Diaz this season. Who’s to say he won’t be better next season? I say his power is what we need in this lineup.

1. Trade DLowe and his fat contract
2. Plug Jason Heyward in the OF.
3. Swipe Dan Uggla and put him at 2B.
4. Matt Diaz at the other corner spot.
5. Keep Tim Hudson and have a rotation of Vazquez/Hudson/Jurrjens/Hanson/Kawakami going into next season.
6. Possible money left over to grab one of Soriano/Gonzo? It’s possible if we can shed Lowe’s contract.
Easier said than done, I’m aware of that. But is it possible? Sure
by BigG1392 on Oct 9, 2009 5:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I wanted the Braves to get Holliday during the summer, and I still want the Braves to get him. Its only possible though if the Braves can unload a massive contract and Wren is a genius but I doubt he can work the miracle of unloading Lowe.

I think this right handed/left handed distinction is pretty stupid. We need a good hitter simple as that, if he’s lefty i don’t see the problem as long as his numbers against lefties aren’t atrocious. I think the best option for us is Shin Soo Choo of the Indians. 4 years of team control left and he brings power to the table as well as being an all around good hitter. We’d have to give up some nice prospects to get him (R. Delgado?) but we wouldn’t have to “dump” players to afford him. Also allows us to go out and get some bullpen arms and bring back LaRoche

I can’t find anything concrete but as of June and July the Indians see his obligation as a “non-issue” so i guess one assumes he’ll continue playing uninterrupted. The trade would be dependent on getting a guarantee obviously. Two other names to throw out there are BJ Upton and Curtis Granderson

If we were to land Cruz
For Schafer, Medlen, B. Jones and Reyes.
We would then trade Lowe or Kawakami. The Angels and Brewers match up well. Maybe Kawakami to the Brewers for Gamel or to the Angels for Sandoval and Arredondo. The Angels deal would be better to me because it would give us a versatile guy in Sandoval and a good RP in Arredondo.
Then the Braves would probably sign a bat with the money saved from the Kawakami deal maybe Dye or Guerrero both of which are on the downside especially defensively, Dye being a little better on D. So I’d sign Dye.
Also we have a couple of possible non-tender candidates that we could deal as I mentioned in another thread. KJ and Acosta to the DBacks for Conner Jackson who may be non-tendered by the DBacks. Then there Ryan Church the White Sox need OF maybe we could send him and a prospect to the Sox for Jenks, who has been rumored of possibly being non-tendered as well.
Finally we re-sign LaRoche and Gonzalez, then extend Hudson and Vazquez
So let’s summarize what I just said:
1. Schafer, Medlen, B. Jones and Reyes to the Rangers for Cruz
2. Kawakami to the Angels for Sandoval and Arredondo
3. KJ and Acosta to the DBacks for Jackson.
4. Church and a prospect for Jenks
5. Sign Dye
6. Re-sign LaRoche and Gonzalez
7. Extend Hudson and Vazquez
Lineup:
McLouth – CF
Prado – 2B
Jones – 3B
Dye – LF
McCann – C
Escobar – SS
Cruz – RF
LaRoche – 1B
Bench:
Ross – C
Infante – Super Utility
Diaz – OF
Jackson – 1B/OF
Sandoval – IF
Starting Rotation:
Javier Vazquez – RHP
Jair Jurrjens – RHP
Tim Hudson – RHP
Derek Lowe – RHP
Tommy Hanson – RHP
Bullpen:
Carlyle/Campillo – LRP
Logan/Gomez – LOOGY
O’Flaherty – MRP
Arredondo – MRP
Moylan – SUP
Gonzalez – SUP/CP
Jenks – SUP/CP

Eventually, if Schafer can progress in batting development, he becomes the starting CF. McLouth then becomes the odd man out. It should never be the other way around. Unless Schafer is in a package that pulls us a Gonzalez, Braun, Kemp, etc…. type player. That ain’t happening so you get my point.

2. Conner Jackson is more versatile than KJ, he can play 1B/OF/3B. Kelly is horrible at 2B let alone any other position. Also Jackson was hurt for most of 2009 and has far more upside than KJ.
3. And how do you know how much Dye would cost? Adam Dunn thought he was getting 15-20 mil last season and got only 10. Dye may get what Abreu got last season a 1 yr/5 mil contract.

If we really want to save money and make our team better, we should get an underrated defensive outfielder. Tommy Hanson is a fly-ball pitcher who would benefit from having someone suck up all those fly balls. Even if they don’t provide the bat we want, the defensive value would make up for it. In addition, defense is still undervalued so we could get a defensive upgrade for much cheaper than an upgraded bat.

Yeah.
Those are two good options. I don’t really expect us to do that, based simply on our terrifying pursuit of Garret Anderson and Ken Griffey Jr. Both of whom are absolute anchors in the field. Look at what the Mariners did. That outfield was fantastic. In fact, if we brought Langerhans back, I’d be psyched.
by Perrinbar on Oct 9, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
are you serious?
yeah, lets get Ryan Langerhans who hit .218 and struck out 1/3ABs in 38 games.
Look, I know Garrett Anderson wasn’t perfect this season; his OBP was low and he played bad defense, but, he was 10x better than any other option we had outside of Adam Dunn. Pat Burrell was horrible. Raul Ibanez had 1/2 of a phenomenal season, but he immediately came back to his normal self after his injury. KGjr was always injured and had to play DH in order to be semi-effective. GA was relatively healthy all season and did his job perfectly: Be a bridge player until Jason Heyward is ready. His production was sub-par for a #5 hitter, but it’s not his fault Bobby is senile and hit him 5th every night.
We didn’t sign GA to be a cornerstone of our team for 5 years. We signed GA to be a 1 year stop-gap played until Jason Heyward was ready. He did exactly what we needed. Could he have given us a little more production? Probably. But for what we had left to spend after singing DLowe, KK and acquring Javy, GA was just fine for us.

GA was, according to WAR, the 3rd WORST position player in the majors last year. Converting WAR into dollar terms he was worth negative $4.1 million. NEGATIVE!!!! That doesn’t compare favorably to Langerhans who, by the way, is a much much better outfielder than GA and was only .006 points lower in wOBA. So, you really think that GA was somehow better? He was a waste of money, plain and simple.

For one this is Cruz first full season in MLB and he is 28 years old who knows this could be another Ludwick type thing here. Not sayin Ludwick wont get it together and be much better next season im just sayin though. Cruz OBP isn’t even that good its decent at best, i would want a guy with .350 OBP with that kind of power if i would even ALMOST think to give up a JJ.
Jurrjens is a 23 year old that in his rookie year posted 3.68 ERA, 188.1 innings, .260 AVG against, 1.37 WHIP, 188 hits, 77 ER doin all this in his rookie year and look what he did in his second year in the bigs hmmm… improved on those stats: 2.60 ERA, 215 innings, 186 hits, 71 ER, 2.37 AVG against, 1.21 WHIP. 28 vs. 23
Someone who has gone from good to great in their first two years vs. someone who had trouble sticking to the big league roster until the last year and a half (Cruz’s stats—http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cruzne02.shtml#batting_standard)
I wouldn’t mind getting Cruz, but certainly not at the price of one of the game’s top young starters. Jurrjens straight up we need someone a bit more proven, like Prince Fielder. Besides, if we’re targetting anyone on the Rangers to bring in, why not just Rudy Jarmillo?

Why not Nick Swisher?
I wasn’t a big fan this past offseason, but he’s shown he can stay healthy (my main concern earlier) and hit like a hittin’ fool from both sides of the plate. He might very well be available if the Yankees retain one of Matsui or Damon, and while he’s not going to hit as many homers away from the Yankee Launching Pad, he’s a middle-of-the-order bat who can play good OF defense, especially if he’s in LF and not RF or CF.
My only concern is how many years he might be under team control, which I think is either 1 or 2… hopefully 2?

Sigh
21 of Swisher’s 29 HRs came on the ROAD and his BA and SLG were much higher on the road than they were at Yankee Stadium.
If anything playing at Yankee stadium had a negative impact on Swisher’s production, and he would be more valuable if he played his home games somewhere else.

I don’t think there is much chance at all that Swisher is available.
Offensively he’s just as good as either of Matsui or Damon and he’s younger (likely) cheaper, and much more versatile in the field. If they do deal him they’re going to want a big return.
The time to get Swisher on the cheap was from the White Sox, but that window was missed, it’s too late now.
