Braves Announcer Skip Caray Dies
Sad news to pass along this evening:
[Skip] Caray died in his sleep Sunday at his Atlanta home, the Braves announced. He was 68.
Caray missed several weeks of work late in the 2007 season because of mounting health problems, and he reduced his broadcast schedule to home games at the start of the 2008 season. He was battling diabetes, congestive heart failure, an irregular heartbeat and reduced kidney and liver functions, he said in April 2008.
The AJC article has some nice biographical notes about Caray's life. I had the pleasure of meeting Skip on several occasions and he always seemed like a pleasant person to be around.
Like many Atlantans, I grew up listening to Caray call Braves games, and much of my love and appreciation for baseball comes from the stories he told during broadcasts and the constant way he kept us all laughing and entertained during the game.
My condonlences go out to Chip Caray and the entire Caray family.
Skip Caray will be missed.

Can this season get any worse? RIP, Skip. You were my favorite announcer.

Just how many blows can a person take?
I mean this season has been a HUGE disappointment, but losing Skip is just not right. He was a hell of a broadcaster and from what I hear (never met the guy unfortunately), was a great person to be around.
Bottomline, Skip you will be deeply missed. :(

Irreplaceable
Honestly, i’m finding myself at a loss for words. I practically grew up on Skip Caray, as did many of you i’m sure. No offense to our current announcers but the games just haven’t been the same without him. This is a very sad day for me!
RIP Skip. You will be sorely missed!

Skip was the best and he made it fun and enjoyable to listen to the Braves no matter how good or bad they were, mainly because he kept everything in a good beat and told it like it was. He will be greatly missed.

It is a testimony to Skip...
when I think of the hours and different means I went to for the chance to hear an AM radio broadcast or to be staying up into the wee hours of the morning on a west coast game to hear the possible Skip Caray call of “Braves Win”. His voice became the voice of the Braves in the mid-70’s till now (even ESPN’rs imitate it for Braves highlights). Scanning through AM radio stations from a car at night…you could always tell when you found the game….Skip’s voice…’and heeeres the pitch’...and that voice was always the perfect pitch for me.

Sad day...
I remember as many of us do, listening to Skip and Pete call game after game. His voice, more than any other, sounds like baseball to me. Players, managers, winning, losing, even ballparks come and go, but Skip and Pete were always there. I liked him so much that I honored him with my SN here when I signed up a few months ago.
So long, Skip! We’ll miss you.

ahhhh man
skip was genuinely funny, which is rare in the world of sports broadcasting. honestly, it took me a few times to realize there was no way he could immediately know the hometown of every fan who caught a foul ball.
never met you, skip… but here’s to you, a buddy who did all the talking while i happily did all the listening. miss ya.

When I was a kid, cable gave me the chance to see the Cubs and the Braves play nearly every day. For years and years, the majority of baseball I saw was announced by Skip or his father, and I loved listening to both of them. It breaks my heart that both of them are gone now.
I offer my sincere condolences to Braves fans everywhere. Skip was one of the best.

RIP Skip Caray
This is a really crushing blow for me. I suppose it is coup de grace after the TBS left the Braves.
Growing up in the 1970s in Atlanta, I developed great admiration for Skip Caray. Younger fans may not realize that he could take awful Braves’ teams and make them fun—and even interesting to watch. His sense of humor was magnificent and it aptly mixed with real insight. Also, Skip never insulted the intelligence of Braves’ fans: he told it like it was.
This one will make me ache….

My favorite thing about Skip was how when somebody would catch a fly ball he would randomly make up their home town, ‘A fan from Gwinett snagged that one.’ People would write in and ask how he knew where everyone that got fouls balls was from he’d make up this nonsense about having a detailed seating chart made out for him before each game and he’d just check it when somebody got a foul ball. My dad and I would watch games and it was always this quick moment of hilarity whenever a foul ball happen.
I loved listening to Harry, loved listening to Skip, love listening to Chip, and I have no doubt I’ll love listening to Chip’s son someday.

My wife
would always ask me how he knew where all the fans were from.
It was too much fun to tell her he was making it up.

Skip was the best
For me, on a personal level, this moment will be what I remember as the worst for the Braves in this long season of misery. Like many who’ve already posted, I grew up listening to Skip, and he is synonymous with the team – he is the voice of the Braves. Not to sell Pete short – I feel the same about him, but this is Skip’s moment. I, too, loved the fan hometowns, and there’s another funny thing Skip used to do that always made me laugh. When he’d read off the contestant names for the Goody’s homerun jackpot, he’d say, “And tonight’s contestant is Bob Smith, who lives in a P.O. Box in Alpharetta, Georgia.” That’s one of my favorites.
So long, Skip. Thanks for everything!
PS
Josh Caray broadcasts for the Rome Braves theses days. He’s not too shabby – check him out sometime on the internet.

+1 Skip…always and forever.
I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Rest in Peace, Skip. We’re all going to miss you.

oh no
I knew that he had some healthy problems but this is totally out of the blue. I grew up watching the Braves when they were the worst team in baseball. Skip kept me watching.
I hope that the Hall of Fame will remember Skip soon.

My favorite call from Skip:
“A lota room in right center, if he hits one there we can dance in the streets. The 2-1. SWUNG…..LINE DRIVE LEFT FIELD….1 RUN IS IN…..HERE COMES BREAM….HERE’S THE THROW TO THE PLATE…..HE ISSSSSSSSSSS SAFE!! BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN!......BRAVES WIN!

R.I.P. Skip
I’m more of a New Orleans Saints blogger, but I heard about this sad news yesterday and wanted to express my sadness at an appropriate place. I was raised a Braves fan by my grandfather and I cherish those memories of watching games with him. Skip’s voice always reminded me of those moments. I will miss him dearly.
Go Saints!!!!

Shocking moment in a shocking year
Many none baseball and non braves fans might not even notice that Skip is gone but the rest of us are hurting like we lost a family member. I remember the long summer nights of my youth watching braves games offten with my grandmother. I remember when he called the Braves game against the pirates when Sid Bream scored that run. Skip was an icon of the south east and latter became an icon of baseball with the Braves being on cable. It will not be the same for us Braves fans it will hurt for awhile. To Skips family I will say God Bless you and thanks for sharing him with us for so many years. While it hurts now we will still see Skips son Chip who in his own right is a very good and maybe some day his other son will move up to. Its been a bad year for the Braves maybe on sunday when they won it was for Skip. Gods speed Skip if there is a field of dreams you will find it.

I'd say
That I’ve lost family members that have upset me more than this, but Skip, was family too.

Film review
Did anyone ever send in a review for Night of the Lepus? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, this was a B movie that TBS had shown for years. Skip was reading the promo for and commented on how many years this had been shown after ball games. He asked viewers for reviews and was flooded with with responses.

As I grew up, my father and I would watch Braves games on TV every night with the volume down and the radio on. He was second to no other announcer in the game. I especially enjoyed games of late when Skip and Chip would broadcast together. I’m sure that those games were wonderful father/ son experiences that few sportscasters get to experience. Thanks for the memories Skip, you will be missed and never forgotten.

Skip Caray
I have listened and watched Skip Caray since he started announcing the Braves games. Prior to him it was Milo Hamilton and Ernie Johnson. Skip had a funny sarcastic way of calling games which made the telecast more entertaining. I surely will miss his wit and enthusiasm, and he will be sorely misseds. Skip, you will be missed greatly but you certainly will not be forgotten by the many Caray fans that you have amassed over the years. My thoughts and prayers go to the Caray family.

Like many others here, I “grew up” listening to Skip. My favorite combo was Skip and Ernie but Skip had that dry sense of humor we all loved. I miss the TBS coverage altogether but Skip absolutely made it great. He will never be replaced…

What Skip Caray Meant to Me
When someone like Skip Caray passes away, all we can do as mere bystanders is remember what role he played in our lives.
Every time I read or hear the words of his famous Sid Bream call I vividly remember watching that game with my Mom. My brother, four years my elder, had gone to bed because the Braves had fallen behind, but my Mom and I stayed up to watch it from my parents bedroom. Even as a 10-year old, I remember thinking the Braves’ fortunes were doomed when a relative unknown came to the plate—Francisco Cabrera. But then the unthinkable happened. Cabrera lined a single to left field and I leapt to my feet on my parents’ bed and plead with the painfully slow Sid Bream to score. More than that, I remember my Mom screaming right alongside me, refusing to go to sleep until I was done watching the game. Of course he did score, and the Braves were on their way to the World Series. But the tear is not about the Braves, it is about the time watching that game with my Mom.
Few memories from my childhood stand out as vividly as the one watching the Braves win the 1992 NLCS. That is what Skip Caray meant to me.

RIP
Rest in peace Skip, like all of you I have fond memories of watching Skip, Pete, Joe, and Don call the games during “the streak.” He was the first baseball announcer that I really enjoyed listening too. It is a sad time in these changing times with the Braves no longer on TBS. I was glad that I watched the last game on TBS, because being up here in Washington it was the only way to watch my Braves. He will be missed up here.

i'm from Cincinnati
and in the mid-90s when i was old enough to understand baseball, Marge Schott thought that telivising to many games would keep people away from the ballpark, so the Reds only telivised 45 games a year. So I watched a lot of Cubs and Braves games because of TBS and WGN. I grow up with Harry and Skip Caray. I remember that February day when I learned Harry Caray died. I was heart broken. Skip dying is harder. I just grew accustomed to being able to turn on TBS and hearing his sarcasic commentary. I remember how boring Braves games seemed in 2004 when they took Skip and Pete off of TBS. Skip Caray is a huge part of the Atlanta Braves franchise. This will be as tough for you, as Joe Nuxhall’s death, last winter, was for Cincinnati.

Goobye Skip
I’m quite shocked about Skip’s death. I had no idea he was in such bad health. I’ll truley miss his laid-back style and great sense of humor. I’m gonna miss his unique broadcast style, Baseball has lost a great ambassador of the game.
