Braves September Call-Ups: Part 2

In part 1 I examined the batters that could be called up when rosters expand in September; in part 2 I will look at the pitchers who could be called up. Pitchers are usually players that team promote a little slower, as their adjustment period to a new league can take longer, so we may not see as many bold moves with our young pitchers as we hopefully will see with some of our young hitters. That said, there's still a good argument to promote some of our top prospects to the majors for a taste of the highest level of competition.

The Braves best pitching prosepct, Tommy Hanson, is the first person I would promote in September. Now I understand the need to be cautious with young pitchers and not over-tax their arm, so when I call for Hanson to be called up I fully understand that means more wear on his arm. But Hanson has not yet met last year's innings total as the Braves have had him skip several starts this year, moving him along with caution. His dominance in double-A is an indication that he is likely only a year or so away from a full-time role in the majors, and with that in mind it may be worth seeing how he handles a start or two in the majors (could it be any worse than Reyes or Morton -- who should also stay in the rotation to work out their problems). The organization may have other plans for him -- like the AFL -- but in an effort to know what kind of pitching we have for next year, we need to see how Hanson handles the bigs.

Another pitcher in a similar situation to Hanson is Kris Medlen. He has found success as a starter, but may project more as a reliver or setup man down the road -- something the Braves certainly have a need for. Medlen would be a good September callup for the bullpen.

Another guy who may get a call is James Parr. He might be added to the 40-man this winter anyway, and the team may want to go ahead and see what they've got in him.

I would recommend to the team to call up as many pitchers as they can. Many of our top line guys like Boyer and Ohman have been badly oversued and spreading out their appearances as much as possible for the rest of the season would probably be the best thing for their arm and their ability to be healthy next year. So Beuno, DeSalvo, Ridgway, and anyone else that's healthy probably needs to be in Atlanta just to eat up innings. We may also see Chuck James getting one more chance, perhaps out of the bullpen. His 40-man roster spot could seriously be in jeopordy.

By calling for so many promotions now, I'm going on the premise that it's better for a lot of these kids to take their licks now, rather than next year when we will presumably be trying to compete from day-1. This season is trashed, so let's use what's left of it to try and develop these young prospects and maybe get a jump on next year.

I want Chuck James off this team ASAP.

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Jay's response...

…didn’t sound like as much of a joke as I hope mine did a couple of weeks ago. Anyhow, Jay – great response. I thought you really articulated the myriad of reasons why Chuck is so valuable to the team. I’m convinced.

Remember when...

…Chuck was a tremendous trade chip and other teams would ask about him whenever JS talked trades? Oh, to have those days over again! I really would like to have been a fly on the wall at that time, to know who was NOT traded for so that we could keep Chuck. But then again, I was holding the reigns on the Chuck bandwagon at the time myself, so I’m not judging, I’m just saying. (I think I’m stealing that line from someone else, but it seems to work.)

Back then Chuck was doing his very best Jorge Sosa impression:

2005 JS, 13-3, 134 IP, 122 H, 12 HR, 64 BB, 85 K, 2.55 ERA, 1.39 WHIP
2006 CJ, 11-4, 119 IP, 101 H, 20 HR, 47 BB, 91 K, 3.78 ERA, 1.24 WHIP

I guess I should be one to talk.

Chuck's best game

vs. Roger Clemens at the end of the 2006 season. Lowes boy beating the Liar/Cheater/Racist/Bigot with seven innings, matching zeroes for five straight. I can only hope that the Braves play spoiler that well later this season.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Ha

Right on. I went to that game, and when Clemens was lifted, I was the only one there booing and drunkenly cursing while the rest of the sheep was giving him a standing ovation.

Connect fOrr was the one who actually broke through and got on base, singled over by Renteria, and scored on an error, amazingly.

I’d love to see Hanson and Medlen up, nobody else excites me, although we do need the help in the pen. I have a question though, do players have to be on the 40 man to be called up?

by 10-4 on Aug 25, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

Bring some pitchers up!

They can’t be any worse. Well, of course, they could — they & the Braves could lose the last 30-odd games, and that would REALLY stink up the stadium/organization.
Still, I agree with Gondee:
“… it’s better for a lot of these kids [pitchers] to take their licks now, rather than next year when we will presumably be trying to compete from day-1. This season is trashed, so let’s use what’s left of it to try and develop these young prospects and maybe get a jump on next year.”

Here are the prospects I would call up in September

PITCHERS

James Parr
Chuck James
Jeff Ridgway
Phil Stockman
Jorge Julio
Todd Redmond
Thomas Hanson
Kris Medlen

Like you said, they need to get at least a hint what the young starters can do against major league hitters because next March (and perhaps much of the 2009 season) will be an open audition for the Braves’ rotation. This season is meaningless now, so why not? I would give Parr, Hanson, and Redmond 1-2 starts apiece in September to see how they respond to the major league spotlight, then shut them down until AFL. No point in burning them up now.

I believe Chuck James’ future in Atlanta is a dead issue, but calling him up now has no downside and gives them a chance to showcase him for the offseason in case he surprises. Let him eat some meaningless innings in Atlanta and take some wear and tear off their other pitchers.

And as you said, some of the overworked pitchers in Braves’ bullpen need to be shut down before some of those guys get hurt for no earthly reason whatsoever. That’s why I would go ahead and call-up Medlen, Stockman, Julio, and Ridgway. If one of them surprises, so much the better.

BTW, I still don’t understand why they kept Will Ohman at the trade deadline.

POSITION PLAYERS

Josh Anderson
Brandon Jones
Brent Lillibridge
Diory Hernandez
Jordan Schafer

Schafer is still the Braves’ CF of the future until proven otherwise, and must be given a chance to show what he can do now. He has hit the cover off the ball in Mississippi in August, so now is the time to take a look. They will have to make decisions this offseason on Lillibridge, Jones, and Anderson, so why not let them get on the field and play? Hernandez is 24 years old and could have a future as a major league reserve infielder, so let’s see what he can do.

I like your picks....

….but do they have to clear roster spots on the 40 man for all those guys? If not, I’d almost 100% agree with your entire post (I might only substitute Jeff Ridgway or Jorge Julio for the new guy, Marek). If they do have to clear roster spots, it becomes more interesting……I’d definitely want to see Redmond, give one last shot to James – maybe even begin a transformation of him to the bullpen. I’d LOVE to see Hanson and Medlen, but only if it’s not rushing them (I’ll leave that judgement to the front office).
As for position guys, may as well get Anderson and Lillibridge back up, Hernandez is interesting, and, again, I’d go pay to see Schafer play in a second – can’t wait for his arrival, and September isn’t soon enough, in my opinion.

if you keep it based on the 40-man…theres not a lot we can do because of all the DL slots.

shut boyer down for the year and let bueno get his time. gotta see if this guy can cut it or if he’s DFA bait over the offseason.

MORE PHIL STOCKMAN, assuming he’s off the DL in richmond. this guy needs to be an important part of the pen next year, and we need more.

let desalvo and ridgway get their shellackings in so we can dump them. fuck, that aybar trade looks real bad right about now.

let lillbridge get some playing time to attempt to increase his trade value. maybe we can package him with kelly as a “middle infield of the future”

let jeff francoeur rot in hell and have jones & perry split time in OF.

if diaz ever gets healthy, see if he can still pummel like he did the last 2 years.

put soriano on the 60-day (if they’re allowed to do that, i dunno) and bring up a kid from richmond since they’re not gonna have playoffs…but fuck does richmond’s pitching suck. let parr get a couple starts maybe?

see if anthony lerew has anything left in the tank after surgery, if not, get him off the 40-man.

let matt desalvo try to get his ERA below 9

Following the Braves...one long hard drink at a time.

Ridgway sucks balls, but it’s not like Aybar is playing all that well. His OBP and SLG are just barely north of .300 and .400 respectively.

Talking about not calling up players too early...

Why is Morton in the Rotation? Julian Tavarez might be 35, but he is still the better pitcher. Even with the Braves 500 games out, wouldn’t it be better to leave Morton in the minors than get shelled every time out? I feel like we’ve been down this road before, and the kid could work on his issues in the minors better than he could while trying to pitch to competition clearly better than him.

by theangelicdoctor on Aug 26, 2008 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah..

…and they said the same thing about Smoltz and Glavine in their first year too. Not saying he’ll be either one, but he’s going to take his lumps.

And most likely be in the rotation next year.

by RainDelay on Aug 27, 2008 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh..

and Tavarez is not a good pitcher period. Not sure where you get your info, but he’s down right horrible – well ok maybe average on a good day.

by RainDelay on Aug 27, 2008 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

No offense Doc

but that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Morton’s problem is a lack of confidence throwing to Major League hitters. He’s already proven he can get Minor League hitters out so the only way to build his confidence is more experience pitching against Major League quality hitters.

And i’m not touching Tavarez. He should have been cut by now.

by scstrato on Aug 27, 2008 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Sometimes when I talk, I don't think...

Okay, you were right about the Glavine and Smoltz thing. And, yes I don’t know where I was getting my Tavarez stats either. Maybe I took a quick glance at the 20 innings he’s pitched with the Braves this season. I blame it all on the Francoeur situation as well as the recent bout of sucking. I’m going to go sulk.
