Jordan Schafer Q&A at BA

I got a heads up from Ben Badler at Baseball America about his interview with Jordan Schafer. It's a good interview, very comprehensive, and there are some interesting tidbits in there. Badler pushes Schafer on the issue of his HGH suspension, illiciting this response:

People can write what they want. I see people write I got suspended for use. If you've got some kind of proof that I used stuff, I mean, someone please come show me. You can say allegedly or whatever you want. Truthfully, it's so much over, I'd rather just put it in the past and just move on...

Yeah, it's pretty much BS. There's not much else to say. I'd rather just put it in the past and try to move on.

Schafer gets comes off as a bit defensive in parts of the interview, especially when he's first asked to talk about the suspension:

If you ask anybody in the organization, ask the people that have been around me, they know how hard I work. They know my workouts in the offseason. (Former Braves and current Rangers shortstop) Elvis Andrus, he's my best friend, he came and stayed with me in the offseason. (Myrtle Beach shortstop) Brandon Hicks came and stayed with me in the offseason, worked out with me, and our workouts are like 10 hours a day. Nobody matches those workouts. You can go anywhere. I mean, people work out for two hours a day and they think that's a hard workout. It's more than just going to the field—there's so many different aspects that you have to improve on. If people want to know how I get better, if you want to come out in the offseason and watch me do my workouts, I'm more than happy—come out and watch me. Come out for a week, watch the whole a week. Anybody that wants to come out and watch, come out and watch, I have no problem with it, if they really want to know how I've gotten so much better.

Well, he comes off rambling a bit more than he should.

Well..

…wouldn’t you start to get defensive after being asked that question a million times and having to abide by basically a gag order to no talk about the details? If I remember correctly he and his parents had to sign non-disclosure agreements.

There’s a lot more to this story, that I’m sure we’ll never know.

Seriously...

…do you want to know the terrifying truth of his ordeal? Or do you want to see him hit a few dingers?

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

I'm with you

I could care less if he took HGH and I could care less about the arguments on whether or not it (allegedly) improved his performance. I want to see him get the call in September and see for myself if he’s got what it takes. Give him a month of experience, start him off in AA next year and then slot Blanco back into the 4th OF spot when he’s ready (assuming Blanco is our everyday CF next year).

I am with...

…the seeing him hit the dingers crowd. There is no way to know what he took or did not take without testing or a smoking gun proof, and frankly I do not care. I am just indifferent to the whole thing. I am glad he is having a good month, and like everyone else I want to seem him in Atlanta in September.

it’s still disappointing when a young player whom you’ve never heard speak before comes across as dim-witted, incapable of handling the press.

that being said…

if he wants to be our manny ramirez, i wouldn’t object.

I think that is a little unfair to Schafer.

He is just a kid after all. He will get better with the press, it just takes time to get used to being asked the same question a million times and not coming off as peeved.

Plus, it isn’t like he is out there pulling this crap between the lines. The guy goes out there and plays hard when he has the opportunity. There is no “Jordan being Jordan” moments that we’ve ever heard of.

Though I will accept Mannyesque levels of production from him.

well

i personally don’t care that he used phd’s, but he’s a kid who broke a big-time rule, and at this point in his career the media will perceive drug-use as the most interesting fact about jordan schafer. so, the constant questions should be expected.

the analogy does not extend to manny’s work ethic. in fact, in reality it barely extends at all — so yes, your point that was i was a bit unfair is fair.

He didn’t sound dim-witted at all. He sounded like Jordan Schafer, 21 year old baseball player. He’s just a kid and I thought it was great that he was speaking as candidly as he could about the situation. The other thing to keep in mind with this written interview is that it doesn’t relay tone that well. Jordan’s a quiet kid, his voice rarely gets above a whisper.

for anyone who’s shitting on him, how about you bother reading the entire interview? he seems like a good kid who’s working his ass off to succeed.

I like his insight about the pitchers and moving up levels.

About how the stuff really isn’t better, except in certain outlier cases (Beckett, Santana, etc), but they’re extremely precise and consistent with their pitches. Makes you really see how fine of a line it is between a good major league pitcher and a bust.
