Rule V Draft Eligible
Just figured I'd get this list out there for us to reference. These are the Braves prospects that will be eligible to be taken in the Rule V Draft unless they're placed on the 40-man roster:
Derrick Arnold
J.C. Boscan
Phillip Britton
Jose Camarena
Eric Campbell
Greg Creek
Quentin Davis
Bryan Dumesnil
Reid Gorecki
Diory Hernandez
J.C. Holt
Sung Jung
Kala Kaaihue
Carl Loadenthal
Stephen Marek
Ernesto Mejia
Brad Nelson
Jon Mark Owings
James Parr
Van Pope
Todd Redmond
Jonathon Rouwenhorst
Zach Schreiber
Yohan Silva
Scott Thorman
Wes Timmons
Chris Vines
Matt Young
I think we're safe with most of these guys, but Schreiber, Redmond, and Marek probably need to be protected. What do you guys think?

Marek, Redmond, and Parr. All three could probably reasonably pitch for a year for a bad team. I’d also protect Campbell just because I believe a ton in his bat and wouldn’t want to risk a team taking a chance on him. We’d be better off leaving guys like Schreiber, Nelson, etc. off the roster and leaving a spot open and maybe taking advantage of the Rule V Draft for once.
I also like Owings enough, but who’s really going to touch an A-ball outfielder whose ceiling is as an average corner outfielder?

I’d protect Diory Hernandez, James Parr, Jon Mark Owings, Kala Ka’aihue, Ernie Mejia, Stephen Marek, and Todd Redmond.
Zach Schreiber was protected last year, but taken off the 40 man this season; also, he blew his arm out and is going to have (or may already have had) Tommy Johhn, so I don’t see any team biting on him.
Also, Yohan Silva was released the other day.

I don't doubt what you say....
….about Silva – but where did you get that information? The Rome roster (which, I know, is not updated regularly enough) still has him listed as being on the 7 day DL.
Just curious….

It was in Baseball America’s weekly transactions. Those guys are pretty much never wrong. Minorleaguebaseball.com has been terrible with some rosters this season, Matt Anderson was released from Charlotte in early May and is still on their roster.

Ah...
cool….thanks!
I wondered because Silva went up to Myrtle Beach this year, then got sent back down to Rome, and almost immediately (if not so) went on the DL and just sort of disappeared.

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

I'd protect...
Marek – we obviously don’t want to end up with even less for Teixeira than we got
Parr – he’s coming around lately, could be next year’s Charlie Morton
Pope – his defense especially could be viewed by some teams as being valuable while his bat develops
Redmond – one of the most consistent pitchers in the system this year, should compete for a spot next spring
I could lean towards Owings, but I’m not sure a team would risk him making that big of a jump, though I wouldn’t be surprised if he were protected. I can see the team possibly protecting someone else on this list, but I think they’d be pretty safe to expose all those guys, as most of them need another year or two.

The idea that Van Pope’s bat is developing to any degree is hilarious. He’s had one season that can be even remotely considered good in 2006 and has had over 800 PAs since then posting a 239/306/348 line. He’ll be 25 next season. He rarely strikes out and shows decent on-base skills, but he’s never shown an ability to hit for average and never shown an ability to hit for power. How does that project as a major league third baseman, even factoring well above average defense? And if it doesn’t why would we waste a 40 man roster spot on him?

You
have to believe that we will protect Eric Campbell. I know he is not ready for the majors but he will be ready for AA at the start of next season and a very bad team might take the risk and pick him and give him at bats in the majors in 09 and then send him to AA in 2010. Or if he does decent enough they could keep him in the majors. I just would not leave Campell off the roster. I do not want to see Campbell turn into Josh Hamilton and we lose him in the Rule V draft. Of course he wont be as good as Hamilton but even if he is HALF as good as Hamilton 3 years from now it will be awful because we did not put him on the 40 man roster.

I think most of the hitters are safe, Diory might draw some interest as he can be stashed as a utility guy for the whole year, but I would definitely protect Marek, Parr, and Redmond. Everyone else is probably up for grabs.

Someone I know on Braves-nation.com compiled this list, so I thought I’d share it with the rest of the Braves fans on the net. That site’s pretty good if anyone wants to check it out.

Interesting list
I think your picks are about right. There are no position players there who would be worth stashing on the bench for a year. We’re going to need roster spots for all the free agents we’ll be signing this fall. (I’m kidding, sort of.)
Marek is probably the guy I would be certain to protect. He may not be ready for the majors, but with his velocity, someone with a bad bullpen could use him as a mop-up guy for a year no problem.
