Trade Talk Slowing Down?
The Phillies are one of the teams still said to be looking for relief help, but as Mark Bowman says, the Braves don't seem to be finding a match with anyone:
The Braves are still listening to multiple offers for Will Ohman. But so far, they haven't been satisfied that the offered compensation is greater than the compensatory Draft pick they'd receive by losing him via the free agent market this winter.
When they aggressively attack the free agent market this winter, the Braves will likely lose at least one selection for the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. If they continue their current struggles and earn one of the Draft's first 15 selections, their signing of a Type A Free Agent would result in them keeping their first-round selection and losing their second-round selection.
With a dramatic turnaround that allows them to finish with one of the 15-best records in baseball, signing a Type A free agent would result in them losing their first-round selection.
By losing Ohman (assuming Elias rates him a Type B free agent) to free agency, the Braves would gain a supplemental first-round pick.
Still over an hour left until the deadline...
UPDATE - 3:10pm:
Boston apparently balked at the price the Braves were asking for in return for Ohman:
They turned down one offer when the Atlanta Braves asked for a pitching prospect in return for 30-year-old lefthanded reliever Will Ohman. The prospect was not at the level of a Justin Masterson or Clay Buchholz, but nonetheless the Sox deemed it too much.
At least we're not settling for mediocre talent in return.

we must
have asked for Bowden, which is who I would want from the Red Sox.

Looks like the Rays got Jason Bay, so cross him off of our list even though he seemed like a slight longshot. The two names that are being floated are Reid Brignac and Jeff Neimann…the Rays’ #5 and #7 prospects according to BA, and #5 and #8 according to BP.

I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

Bay to Boston, Manny to Dodgers, 4 minor-leaguers to Pittsburgh.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Damn…I had just told a couple friends Bay was a Ray.

Apparently
The LaRoche brothers are united at last. Andy LaRoche included in the deal, along with Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss, with one PTBNL.

So...
...the trade breaks down like this:
Red Sox
Get: Jason Bay
Give: Manny Ramirez ($7 million salary this year), two prospects
Dodgers
Get: Manny Ramirez
Give: Two prospects (I’m assuming Bryan Morris is their prospect?)
Pirates
Get: 4 prospects
Give: Jason Bay
At first glance, it looks like the Dodgers are about even, while the Pirates look like winners, and the Red Sox look like they really had to bend over…but I guess they were tired of Manny’s bullshit. Anyone else?

I don’t think that the Sox had to bend over for this one.
Losing Manny sucks, but the replace him with a somewhat comparable bat in Bay that is cheaper, younger, signed for next year, and is a far less dramatic and unpredictable player.
Bay won’t shut down on you just because he is angry with the traveling secretary like Manny will. Sure they had to pay his way out of town, but Boston can take a $7 million bath on Manny Ramirez without blinking.
I think it is a decent deal. Ned Colletti may be sad he gave up those two guys in about a year and a half, but oh well.

I still think it looks bad when the Sox have to throw in two major league ready prospect-y guys and eat $7 of Manny’s contract just to ship him off. I know they don’t care about the money, but I was surprised about the other two guys…

On first glance, and without the benefit of hindsight that we’ll have later, I think all parties made out pretty well. The Dodgers get a big bat for their playoff push, the Pirates get 3 pretty good players (maybe 4, I don’t know much about the kid going to single A), and the Sox get to wash their hands of the ManRam soap opera, without leaving a gaping hole in their lineup.
Hansen is going to be pretty good in Pittsburgh, I think. The change of scenery and lack of pressure will do him good.
