Jason Bay in the Braves Crosshairs
From MLB's Mark Bowman:
The Braves scored 27 runs during this past weekend's series in Philadelphia and won just once. Things certainly might have been different had they had Chipper Jones and Jason Bay in their lineup.
Jones was sidelined by a strained left hamstring and Bay was stuck in Pittsburgh because Pirates ownership was reluctant to move him.
Before the start of Friday's game, many of the Braves players were asking about Bay. Some were under the impression that they were going to walk into the clubhouse that day and find him to be their newest teammate.
But a proposed deal, which would have brought Bay to Atlanta in exchange for four Minor Leaguers, was killed when presented to the Pirates owners for approval.
Still as the week progresses, the Braves will continue to pursue Bay, who is set to earn $7.5 million during the final year of his contract next year.
The Pirates would have a definite interest in shortstop Brent Lillibridge, who they developed before trading him to the Braves in exchange for Adam LaRoche last year.
In addition, they'd likely ask for Brandon Jones, who would be considered a Major League-ready outfielder. He hit .278 (15-for-54) with seven extra-base hits, including a homer, in 16 games with Atlanta earlier this year.
To complete the deal the Braves would likely also have to include one of their talented young pitchers from the Class A level and another marginal position player.
It depends on who the young pitchers are, but Lillibridge and Jones plus two young arms for Bay is probably an acceptable package to give up (and also acceptable to us the fans). I don't think that the Braves have the patience to wait for Brandon Jones to develop, and Brent Lillibridge at this point is simply insurance -- albeit valuable insurance -- against an injury to Yunel Escobar. We have plenty of young arms in the minors, so it would be interesting to see who would be the two lower level talents that would have gone (or would go) in the deal.
I've thought for a long time that the Braves were protecting Brandon Jones from showing too much in the major leagues, in the hopes of keeping him as an untarnished trade chip. If we need offense and power in the outfield, then why isn't he in the majors at least attempting to provide that?
As for Bay, well, I think we'd be fools not to try and acquire him... even if we trade Teixeira. But if we're trying to improve this team for this year, then my thoughts are that it will take a lot more than just Jason Bay to do that. Again, like the Teixeira deal last year, this is a deal for this season and next season.

we have enough OF depth at this point that I don’t mind losing Jones (though I have always liked him) and you’re right about Lilli being insurance at this point. You know the Pirates want Locke from Rome though. I mean who else? Barrett? Rodgers? Evarts (who hasn’t pitched in 3 months)?
So let us see:
B. Jones
Brent Lillibridge
Jeff Locke
Micah Owings
I threw Owings in there because he is doing well this season and is under the radar but he is a little old for the league. Would you guys do that deal for a season and half of Tex?

They could want Rohrbourgh.
Also, I giggle a little bit each time someone mentions ‘so and so ain’t going to the Braves unless they give up Heyward.’

Wonder why the Pirates owners nixed the deal? My only guess is they were afraid of fan backlash. Fans apparently didn’t like what the Nady trade brought back.

Bob Nutting probably killed the deal...
...because attendance is down and he does not want to see the team collapse in the second half.
By the way, that’d have been a terrible return for Bay. If the Pirates want to dump Bay’s salary for low ceiling-prospects, then the team should just hold onto Bay till July 2009.

If I am the Pirates
I ask for Hanson, Jones, Lillibridge and Rohrbough. I don’t think the Braves do it, but they should ask.
I figure it is:
B. Jones
Lillibridge
Rohrbough
Owings
Depending on what we’d get for Tex, I’d do it. As much as I like Rohrbough, if we get Jarrod Parker back from the D-Backs, we replace Rohrbough in the minors.

Hopefully...
...this is .906 OPS Jason Bay we’re talking about and not .746 OPS Jason Bay.
I guess I should be one to talk.
There's nights that I can't even walk.
There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

you almost have to think he was battling injuries or something last year since that was really a blip on the radar compared to his other seasons.

Bay was battling injuries last season
His knees, to be specific.

This will never happen ...
but If I could choose I say we spin Tex to LAA for Kotchman, Adenhart and a low level prospect, send the above mentioned 4 to PIT for Bay then spin Adenhart, the low level LAA prospect and another 2/3 prospects to TOR for Halladay!
Man, adding Bay, Halladay and Kotchman to this team – whew! Yes, it depletes our system somewhat but we’ve proven we can rebuild it in a hurry. AND Yes, like I said above, I know this won’t happen. Here’s to daydreaming!

Hmm
Let’s look at this a little closer and theorize about who we’d give up:
- Tex / for / Kotchman, Adenhart and Low Level Pitcher
- Lillibridge, Jones, Locke and Owings / for / Bay
- Schafer, Adenhart, Rohrbough and Low Level LAA Pitcher
Again, let’s not talk about the feasibility – I admit it most likely/probably won’t happen, i’m just tired of hearing people who have NO IDEA talk like they’re Frank’s righthand man. Let’s just play with it…
LIneup
1. Blanco – CF
2. Yunie – SS
3. Chipper – 3B (post DL)
4. Bay – LF
5. McCann – C (post potential DL)
6. Francoeur – RF
7. Kotchman – 1B
8. Johnson – 2B
Bats off the Bench:
Lefty – Kotsay
Righty – Diaz (post DL – if that happens)
Rotation
1. Hallday
2. Huddy
3. Jurrjens/Campillo
4. Campillo/Jurrjens
5. Morton/Reyes/Hampton/whoeverthehell
I love that lineup, not to mention how it solidifies next year (Bay is signed thru 2009 – right?, Halladay 2010? and Kotchman for several years). Most of all I love the Rotation, think about if Smoltz is able to return to form next year – closer or starter.
Plus, it doesn’t stop us from competing this year! Pipe dreams are a bitch, aren’t they?

FYF has no reason batting 6th in a major league lineup until he can prove himself again.
I guess I should be one to talk.

Won't disagree with you there ...
I just put him there to avoid the “automatic out”, Johnson, “automatic out” lineup. I REALLY don’t want 2 automatic outs finishing out the lineup.

Fair enough, I understand that. But I’d rather give the best hitters more PAs over the course of the season. Now, if Francoeur comes back with an improved plate discipline…then we’ll talk.

I’d have McCann 4th followed by Bay, Kotchman, Frenchy against right handed pitching.

Trades.
I don’t mind trading for Bay if the price is Jones, Lillibridge, a Class A pitcher (not Osuna, Ortegano or Locke) and a truly marginal position playing prospect of their choice. I also wouldn’t mind looking into acquiring Halladay and trading Tex, too. That said, I’m not sure that those deals outlined above would work (almost all of our prospects mentioned are tarnished) and it’d be extremely difficult to get three blockbusters like those done in what’s left before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Maybe I made a bad assumption
“it’d be extremely difficult to get three blockbusters like those done in what’s left before the non-waiver trade deadline”
but I figured that was well known. Hell some teams can’t pull off ONE blockbuster much less three, then to consider there’s only 3 days and some change left …
There really was no point to my posting other than to free my mind from this years debacle of a season by daydreaming about better things to come (or not).

Just had to bring that up, didn’t you. That play hurt me more than when my buddy sprayed Deep Woods OFF on my (newly acquired) strawberry at our softball game!
