Cubs Making Strong Push for Peavy

The Braves may be encountering some stiff competition from the Chicago Cubs for the hottest pitcher on the trade market, Jake Peavy. According to Ken Rosenthal:

The Cubs have emerged as a front-runner in the Peavy sweepstakes, perhaps even ahead of the Braves, according to major-league sources.

The Cubbies seem to want everything, as they're trying to resign their own free agent Ryan Dempster (a player the Braves may also have an interest in signing), while pursuing an available player like Peavy. Perhaps just as interesting as the Cubs emerging as a possible front-runner, is the way the Padres initially negotiated with the Braves (in an apparent vacuum):

The Padres initially granted the Braves an informal window of exclusivity in the Peavy discussions, but the teams have been unable to reach an agreement on players.

I would guess that exclusivity was granted because the Padres felt they matched up the best with the Braves and coveted some of our players, namely Yunel Escobar and Tommy Hanson.

For the Braves part, every indication is that they are still right up there with the Cubs, so while Rosenthal calls them the front-runners, all that could change if the Braves cede to one of the Padres demands. There are no trades expected anytime soon as Braves GM Frank Wren heads to Arizona to get a first-hand look at Tommy Hanson and the other Braves prospects. Certainly these GM meetings have laid the groundwork for a lot of possible moves for the Braves. We'll just have to keep hanging on to see which ones acutally evolve into trades.

Hanson the next Peavy???

I saw a quote from Frank Wren saying that a lot of MLB scouts have said that Hanson has the tools to be the next Peavy within the next 2 years. I knew his stock was high but that is exceptionally high praise and helps me to understand why he is off the table. If he is going to be that good then why not try to get a cheaper starter and hope that between those guys you could put together an admirable staff. With Jurjjens, Campillo, Hanson you have a decent foundation, although to most this looks like a middle to end of the rotation. I think losing Yunel would also set our defnse back a couple of years.

Cubs Prospects

I thought the Cubs did not have the requisite prospects to get this deal done.

Lets hope the Cubbies do not land this guy, think about their rotation with Peavy……Sick.

I am not sold on the whole Peavy deal. I don’t think the Braves should give up Escobar at all, like not even entertain the idea. Likewise, Tommy Hanson has to stay. If that means getting two free agent pitchers who are lesser and being bad for a season, well maybe that’s what it takes. I like the idea of Tazawa a lot, and am currently riding on the Ben Sheets, Ryan Dempster train.

The Braves...well Wren..

…has already said they’re not going after Sheets because of his health issues. So really we should put that Sheets to Atlanta stuff to bed already.

I really don’t want us to sign Sheets. We already lived through Mike Hampton, and may end up stuck with him another year. I can’t stomach another Mr. Glass in our rotation.

I think Peavy is just as big of a Mike Hampton chance. His mechanics worry me.
