The Atlanta Braves lead the National League Division Series by a 2-1 margin following a home victory in Game 3 against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday afternoon. With Atlanta now in the driver’s seat with two chances to win a single game to advance to the NLCS, the Talking Chop Podcast returns for Episode 312 to survey the landscape.

TC’s Brad Rowland breaks down the following topics:

Ian Anderson avoided disaster in the first inning — which isn’t always a given — and was fantastic for the Braves

Atlanta’s starting pitching has been unbelievable in the series

The Adam Duvall base-running blunder didn’t bite Atlanta, but it was hideous

The fifth inning of Game 3 swung the game in favor of the Braves, with the Brewers wasting an opportunity and Joc Pederson continuing his series-long brilliance

Atlanta’s bullpen took up the mantle from Anderson and took things over the finish line

Looking ahead to Game 4, including pitching options, projections and the situation overall

Much, much more

Atlanta takes a 2-1 lead in the NLDS.

Joc Pederson homered again in support of a good outing by Ian Anderson to help the Atlanta Braves to a 3-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of the NLDS.

The Braves threatened to break through in the second against Freddy Peralta. Austin Riley reached on an infield single and then moved up to second on a single by Adam Duvall. Riley moved over to third on a fly out by Eddie Rosario. Travis d’Arnaud followed and lifted a fly ball to Yelich in left who threw to second and nabbed Duvall who was trying to move up. The tag happened before Riley scored so the Braves inexplicably came away empty handed in the inning.

Anderson ran into his first trouble in the fifth when he nicked Julio Urias in the hand with a pitch to begin the inning. Omar Narvaez followed with a double to left to put runners at second and third with no one out. The Braves pulled the infield in and Lorenzo Cain grounded sharply to Swanson at short who made a diving stop, looked the runners back and then threw to first for the out.

Vogelbach grounded to Riley who threw home to catch Urias in a rundown and eventually tagged him for the second out. Kolton Wong followed and lined a bullet right to Freddie Freeman at first to end the inning.

Adrian Houser took over for Peralta and the Braves immediately went to work. d’Arnaud and Swanson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Brian Snitker then sent Joc Pederson to the plate who launched a 1-2 pitch into the ChopHouse for a three-run home run.

Atlanta needed a big time start from Anderson and he delivered allowing just three hits over five scoreless innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter while throwing 84 pitches.

Jesse Chavez worked a perfect sixth and then gave way to Tyler Matzek in the seventh. Eduardo Escobar began the inning with a long fly to left that Rosario misplayed into a double. Matzek then retired Urias on a ground out and pinch-hitter Manny Pina on a fly out. He then struck out Cain to leave the runner stranded.

Luke Jackson took over in the eighth and quickly found himself in a jam. Pinch-hitter Jace Peterson walked to begin the inning. Wong flew out for the first out but Willy Adames singled with Peterson going first to third on the play. That would bring Yelich to the plate who grounded back up the middle to Swanson who touched second and then threw on to first to complete the inning ending double play.

The Braves had a chance to add on another run in the eighth. Ozzie Albies led off the inning with a double to right. After Riley struck out, Albies moved to third on a wild pitch by pitcher Jake Cousins. Cousins broke Duvall’s bat on a grounder to Adames for the second out. Milwaukee intentionally walked Rosario before d’Arnaud flew out to end the inning.

Will Smith took over in the ninth. Avisail Garcia lined out to Riley at third on a leaping grab for the first out. Smith then struck out Escobar swinging for the second out. Smith then flew out to Urias in right for the final out.

Pederson is now 3-for-3 in the series with a pair of homers and four RBI. Duvall finished with two hits in the game and fortunately his base running mistake didn’t come back to haunt Atlanta. The Braves will try to close out the series in Game 4 will get underway at 5:07 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Monday’s outcome will determine the team’s plans for Game 4

The Atlanta Braves got the split they needed in the first two games of the NLDS up in Milwaukee. They will now try to take the upper hand in Game 3 at Truist Park Monday. Ian Anderson will get the start for the Braves in Game 3 and Brian Snitker said that Monday’s result would likely influence their pitching plans for Game 4 Tuesday.

“Yeah, we’re still talking and kind of going over that, just seeing, again, how we get there,” Snitker said of Game 4.

A follow up question asked about the availability of Game 1 starter Charlie Morton on short rest and Snitker didn’t rule it out.

“Yeah, I think everybody’s in play.”

Morton hasn’t started on three days rest in the regular season since 2008, but he did close out the 2017 World Series with a four inning relief appearance that came on three days of rest.

Ian Anderson made four postseason starts in 2020, including Game 7 of the NLCS against the Dodgers. He allowed a combined 11 hits and two runs over 18 2/3 innings. He struck out 24 and walked just 10 over that span.

“The kid’s been very impressive,” Snitker said of Anderson. “He was impressive as soon as he landed here last year and how he handled everything and his demeanor and how he processes things.”

“He’s learned a lot this year, too, I think, this being his first full year as a starter,” Snitker added. “You don’t surprise anybody. You have to make adjustments because people are adjusting to you. There’s expectations that you have to deal with and the whole thing peeling layers to become a Major Leaguer. I think he’s handled everything really well.”

“I hate that he had the little setback, but he’s bounced back from that, and I think just continued to get better and better since he made starts since coming back.”

The Braves will stick with the same starting lineup as in the first two games of the series for Game 3. Snitker was asked if he had considered using Joc Pederson who is 2-for-2 with a home run in pinch-hit duty during the series.

“No, kind of more the matchup thing,” Snitker said “I know in the past if Joc’s had really good numbers off somebody, we’ve put him in there.”

Pederson is 1-for-6 with four walks and four strikeouts in 10 career plate appearances against Game 3 starter Freddy Peralta.

Eddie Rosario is 2-for-7 in the series with a pair of singles. Jorge Soler is 1-for-8 with a doubled a walk while Adam Duvall is 0-for-7 with a walk and a strikeout.

Peralta allowed 14 home runs in 144 1/3 innings this season but four of those came over his final 23 innings. Snitker was asked if the team would try to alter their approach and try and work the count more against Peralta.

“We’re not that group. Just look, our guys come out, they swing,” Snitker said. “They’re early count swingers. And I don’t see us altering an approach. I mean, they do the video. They’ve got scouting reports. But they’re looking to hit, that’s for sure.”

Monday’s game will start at 1:07 p.m. ET at Truist Park. That was the advertised game time but there was a scenario where the game could have been pushed back to a 4:07 p.m. start time had the Houston Astros finished off the Chicago White Sox Sunday night. The White Sox won Game 3 but the game didn’t end until after midnight which left the Braves and the Brewers in limbo in regards to their start time.

“It probably would have been a lot easier on these guys if they knew for sure it was a 1:00 start instead of the outcome of that game determining when the start was,” Snitker said. “I think that would have been better for them to know that, but they’ll be fine.”

Snitker said that they were forced to prepare for both scenarios.

“Walt got his whiteboard and we had two different scenarios that we sent yesterday afternoon,” Snitker said. “So they were going to have to pretty much set two alarms, one probably about 12:30 if they fell asleep to see who won that game, and then adjust the second one pretty much. We sent two different, totally different scenarios to them depending on the outcome.”

Snitker added that he didn’t think the uncertainty would have an effect on the team but that it would have been better had they known when they were going to play.

“Yes, absolutely it would have,” Snitker said. “It’s something that happens and we’ll adjust and we’ll be fine, but I think it’s always better I think to know. I sat with Bobby (Cox) yesterday for a little bit and asked him if he had experienced anything like that in all the years he went through playoffs. And he couldn’t remember anything.”

Afternoon baseball at Truist Park.

The NLDS continues with Game 3 set for Monday afternoon as the Atlanta Braves will try to take control of the series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Braves dropped the opener in Milwaukee 2-1 but a strong performance by Max Fried in a 3-0 win in Game 2 sent them back to Atlanta with home field advantage. They will be looking to keep the momentum going Monday.

Ian Anderson will get the start for the Braves in Game 3 and they will need a good performance out of him with Game 4 likely to be a bullpen game. Anderson put together a solid season although he was hampered by a shoulder problem heading into the All-Star break. Overall, he ended up making 24 starts and logging 128 1/3 innings while posting a 3.58 ERA and a 4.12 FIP.

He missed just over a month coming out of the All-Star break due to the shoulder and hasn’t been as consistent since returning. He logged six starts in the second half and put up a 3.62 ERA and a 5.67 FIP in 32 1/3 innings. Anderson did finish the season on a good note allowing five hits and three runs over his last two starts combined (13 innings).

Anderson faced the Brewers back on May 15 and allowed two hits and one run over six innings. He walked four and struck out four.

Right-hander Freddy Peralta will be on the mound for the Brewers in Game 3. Peralta put together an excellent season with a 2.81 ERA and a 3.12 FIP in 144 1/3 innings. He posted a 33.6% K-rate and was worth 4.0 fWAR for the season.

Peralta also dealt with some shoulder inflammation in August that required a stint on the 10-day injured list and his numbers took a hit once he returned. He made five September starts and posted a 4.70 ERA and a 3.91 FIP and allowed four home runs over his final 23 innings. Peralta faced the Braves back on May 16 and held them scoreless over six innings while allowing just two hits while striking out eight.

Austin Riley is 3-for-8 in the series with a home run in Game 2. Joc Pederson came off the bench in each of the first two games but is 2-for-2 with a home run.

There was a chance that Game 3 would have had a late afternoon start but will start at 1:07 p.m. ET due to Chicago’s win over Houston in the ALDS Sunday night.
