Atlanta has to find a way to breakthrough against Milwaukee’s rotation.

We were expecting a low scoring, high pressure matchup in the NLDS between the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers and that was exactly what Game 1 delivered. As is the case in most close games, there were several key moments that came back to haunt Atlanta.

The Braves had an opportunity to stake themselves to an early lead putting runners at the corners with no one out in the first inning. However, Ozzie Albies grounded out to first and Rowdy Tellez gunned down Jorge Soler at the plate.

“It’s big, when you face a starting pitcher like that. If you let them off the hook, they’ll get settled in and find their location and all that,” Brian Snitker said of the missed opportunities against Burnes. “You love to get to a pitcher like that early before he gets settled in, because they get out of an inning like that and things happen like it did.”

Albies’ grounder to first had an exit velocity of 69.5 mph off the bat. It wasn’t hit very hard but Tellez made a good throw and Omar Narvaez got the tag down in time. Snitker didn’t want to second guess the decision to send Soler.

“I don’t put it on him. Probably 95 percent of the guys would go on that,” Snitker said of the play. ”Because you can’t react quick enough and think quick enough on that play right there.”

“If that ball is tapped out in front of the plate, then you can shut it down. It’s hard to shut down that ball right there. He had to make a good throw too. The catcher made a nice play.”

Burnes needed 40 pitches to get through the first two innings. He settled in from there and threw up zeroes before exiting in the sixth.

Morton matched him pitch-for-pitch and recorded nine strikeouts through the first five innings. He ran into trouble in the sixth issuing a leadoff walk to pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach. He fell behind Kolton Wong 2-0 but got him to fly out harmlessly to left for the first out. Willy Adames and Chirstian Yelich both flew out to leave the runner stranded.

Morton came back out to pitch in the seventh and quickly jumped ahead of Avisail Garcia before hitting him with a 1-2 pitch. He again got ahead of Tellez 1-2 but let a fastball out over the plate that Tellez drove out to center for a two-run home run.

Following the game, Snitker was asked about the decision to send Morton back out there for the seventh. He was at just 75 pitches at that point but seemed to start to lose some command in the sixth. Still, Snitker said that Morton felt good and he didn’t hesitate about sending him back out for another inning.

“Not at all. I talked to him. He said he felt good,” Snitker said of Morton. If he’d have had 10 or 15 more pitches I probably wouldn’t have, but I thought he was in an area where all year long we’ve let him go back. I wouldn’t second-guess because you have to take your hat off to the hitter. He didn’t miss it, didn’t foul it off. I was glad he could go back out. I would have hit for him that inning if we would have got down there.”

Atlanta had another opportunity in the ninth when Josh Hader walked Freddie Freeman to begin the ninth. After Ozzie Albies struck out, Riley singled to left to put runners at first and second. Adam Duvall then hit a tapper out in front of the plate and Narvaez pounced on it and threw to second for the second out putting runners at the corners.

The Braves then opted to send Orlando Arcia to the plate to bat for Eddie Rosario. Hader then got Arcia to ground to second for the final out. Arcia was a peculiar choice given that Atlanta still had its full complement of bench options available with the exception of Joc Pederson. Arcia had a 48 wRC+ for the season and a 77 wRC+ in his career against left-handed pitchers. Guillermo Heredia hit .258/.330/.427 with a 101 wRC+ and would have likely gone into the game to replace Rosario had the Braves tied the game. At that point, any of Heredia, Ehire Adrianza or William Contreras all look like better options.

Overall it was a disappointing result, but the task doesn’t really change for Atlanta. They still need only to split one of the two games in Milwaukee and then take care of business at home.

“I feel good going into Game 2. I have Max Fried pitching. I feel good every time he takes the mound for us,” Snitker said. “We knew this ball game was going to be rough. The runs would be at a premium and they were. It was exactly what I thought that this game would be. Somebody got a big hit and a lot of times most of the big hits in the postseason they’re homers. They hit one and we didn’t.”

Fried will match up against Brandon Woodruff in Game 2 on Saturday.

Atlanta had Corbin Burnes on the ropes early but were unable to cash in.

The Atlanta Braves had their chances early but were unable to mount enough offense in a 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the NLDS.

Coming into the series, the expectation was that it would be a low-scoring affair with both team’s starting pitchers taking center stage. Well, Charlie Morton and Corbin Burnes lived up to that.

It took Burnes a little longer to settle in and the Braves missed out on a scoring opportunity in the first. Burnes began the game by issuing back-to-back walks to Jorge Soler and Freddie Freeman. Soler actually advanced all the way to third as ball four to Freeman got away from catcher Omar Narvaez. With runners at the corners, Ozzie Albies grounded a 1-0 pitch to Rowdy Tellez at first who stepped on the bag and then threw home in time to nab Soler at the plate for a momentum crushing double play.

Freeman moved to second on the play and then moved to third on a wild pitch but Austin Riley struck out to leave him stranded.

Charlie Morton came out firing and struck out the side in the first. Burnes issued another walk in the second to Travis d’Arnaud but Dansby Swanson grounded out to end the inning. While the Braves didn’t record a hit, Burnes needed 40 pitches to navigate through the first two innings.

Morton struck out two more hitters in the second including Rowdy Tellez on a nasty curveball down and in.

Morton allowed a one-out single to Lorenzo Cain in the third. Cain was erased on a bunt attempt by Burnes that was fielded by Freeman who fired to second for the out. Morton then carved up Wong to strand the runner at first.

After laboring a bit through the first two innings, Burnes settled in and retired seven straight before Eddie Rosario reached on a bloop single to lead off the fifth inning. He was quickly erased on a double play grounder by d’Arnaud. Dansby Swanson followed with a single to left but Morton bounced back to the mound for the final out.

Morton allowed a single to Narvaez in the fifth but got Crain to ground into a force play for the third out. Burnes continued to match him pitch for pitch striking out both Soler and Albies in a scoreless sixth.

Craig Counsell sent Daniel Vogelbach to pinch-hit for Burnes in the home half of the sixth and Morton walked immediately him on four pitches. Vogelbach gave way to pinch-runner Jackie Bradley Jr. Morton fell behind Wong 2-0, but Wong swung at the next pitch and lifted a fly ball to Rosario in left for the first out. Morton then got Adames to fly out to Duvall in center and Yelich to fly to left for the final out.

Burnes was excellent after the tough start. He allowed just two hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six while throwing 91 pitches.

Adrian Houser took over for Burnes in the seventh and retired the side in order on three ground outs.

Morton came back out for the seventh and things immediately went sideways. Morton got ahead of Avisail Garcia 1-2 but then hit him with a pitch. That brought Tellez to the plate, and he jumped on a 1-2 fastball in the middle of the plate and drove it out to center for a two-run home run.

Morton was replaced by Luke Jackson, who promptly served up a single to Eduardo Escobar. However, Jackson got Narvaez to ground into a 4-6-3 double play and then retired Cain on a grounder to Riley to bring the inning to an end.

Morton deserved a better fate. He labored a bit in the sixth but still retired the side on three weakly hit fly balls before coming back out for the seventh where he made one mistake and paid for it. He allowed three hits and two runs over six plus innings to go along with nine strikeouts. He threw 85 pitches with 60 going for strikes.

The Braves finally got on the board in the eighth. Houser struck out d’Arnaud and then got Swanson to ground out for the first two outs. Joc Pederson then came on to pinch hit for Jackson and homered to left-center to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

Tyler Matzek allowed a two-out single to Adames and then walked Yelich but came back and struck out Garcia to strand the runners.

Atlanta wouldn’t go away quietly as Freeman worked a lead off walk against Josh Hader in the ninth. Albies chased strike three for the first out but Riley followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Adam Duvall bounced in front of the plate and Narvaez pounced on it and threw to second for the second out. Hader then got pinch-hitter Orlando Arcia to ground out to second for the final out.

We came in expecting a low-scoring game and that is what we got. The Braves had their opportunities but were unable to find that key hit. Game 2 will be Saturday with Max Fried matching up against Brandon Woodruff.

The Braves left a pair of veteran relievers off the roster and elected to carry outfielder Terrance Gore.

When the Atlanta Braves set their roster in advance of Game 1 of the NLDS Friday, there were some surprises. Atlanta elected to go with just 12 pitchers for the best-of-five series but left off both Chris Martin and Richard Rodriguez from the final list.

“I think it’s always tough when you have to bring somebody in that’s helped you get to where you’re going,” Snitker said. “That’s one of the hardest things, whether it’s a position player or a pitcher that doesn’t make the roster. And they’ve helped you get to, like I say, get here.”

“I’m sure they didn’t like it. But, again, it’s more who you’re playing more than what they can or can’t do,” Snitker said of the omissions. “So they’ll both be in play for the next round if we advance.”

Martin has been a key piece of Atlanta’s bullpen over the past few seasons but battled injuries throughout the 2021 campaign. He ended up appearing in 46 games but saw his K-rate drop to from 30.3% in 2020 to 18.2% this season. Rodriguez’s struggles have been well chronicled. Dating back to September 1, he has allowed 14 hits and seven runs, including five homers in just 12 innings. Perhaps more concerning, since joining the Braves he has a total of nine strikeouts in 26 innings.

One of the more surprising names to make the roster was outfielder Terrance Gore who did not spend a day on the Major League roster all season. Gore signed a minor-league deal with the club last offseason and had just 85 plate appearances at Gwinnett where he hit .232/.361/.319. Gore’s value is with his legs and he will give Atlanta a pinch-running option and another late inning defensive replacement for the outfield.

“That’s why Alex hired him and put him in Triple-A,” Snitker said of Gore. “We had two or three different guys over the years that have provided that role. Hopefully we can get somebody on to use him but you like to have that runner if you can. With the 26 guys, we were afforded that luxury.”

Another somewhat less surprising addition was the inclusion of Orlando Arcia who hit just .214/.282/.343 in 78 plate appearances for the Braves this season.

“He had some big hits for us down the stretch there when we were trying to win games,” Snitker said of the decision to carry Arcia. “He’s done a really good job for us. He was good depth, and I admire him that every time we sent him back, he just went back and continued to do well.”

“We asked him to play the outfield. Did a great job at short for us in Triple-A. Played really well here when he had the opportunity, but he’s got some big hits for us the last couple of weeks when we were trying to win this thing.”

Arcia hit .200/.304/.300 with two doubles over 23 plate appearances in September.

The Braves still haven’t announced their pitching plans for a potential Game 4 back in Atlanta. Huascar Ynoa is the odds on favorite to start but could also be used out of the bullpen early in the series. More and more it is looking like some sort of bullpen game is a possibility. Snitker said Friday that Drew Smyly could figure into that mix as well.

“Some length, and I don’t know what route we’re going to go in Game 4,” Snitker said of including Smyly on the roster. “It could be a bullpen game, but Drew’s been throwing the ball really well, too. He’s had some really good outings. And it’s just the matchup with the opponent, pretty much.”

There are no surprises for the Braves’ lineup for Game 1. Adam Duvall gets the start in centerfield and will be flanked by Eddie Rosario in left and Jorge Soler in right. Atlanta will go with its normal infield alignment with Freddie Freeman at first, Austin Riley at third and Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies up the middle. Travis d’Arnaud will be behind the plate.

This is exactly what the Braves were hoping for when they signed Morton last offseason.

The Atlanta Braves will officially begin their postseason quest Friday evening when they open up the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Braves overcame a lot of adversity to put themselves in this position. They will be making their fourth straight appearance in the postseason and will be hoping that past experiences will help them this time around.

“I think it’s just we have the expectation to win now,” Freddie Freeman said while speaking to the media Thursday. “2018, I think we just surprised everyone. We were just happy to be there again after going through a rebuild. ‘19, you know, just didn’t work out for us. ‘20, Ronald was a little banged up; Ozzie was a little banged up. But we still got one game from the World Series.”

“This year, even though we lost Ronald in July, we played with the group we have for the last two months, it’s been a whole different team. It’s just a whole different outlook for us and how we go forward with the way we finished.”

Charlie Morton will get the start for the Braves in Game 1 and this has to be the exact situation that the team envisioned him pitching in when they signed him last offseason. Morton has been a big game pitcher in the postseason and the Braves will be looking for more of that Friday.

Morton was Atlanta’s most consistent pitcher throughout the regular season and finished strong allowing just 10 runs over his final 34 2/3 innings. He has 13 career playoff appearances posting a 3.38 ERA in 61 1/3 innings.

Milwaukee went 95-67 this season and wrapped up the central division early largely on the backs of its starting rotation which finished second in fWAR behind the Dodgers. Their offense ranked 23rd with a 91 wRC+ but there is a level of scrappiness to this group and their defensive success paired nicely with their pitching staff.

“I would say they’re pretty balanced. There’s some power there,” Morton said of the Brewers. “There’s some scrappiness there and everything in between. I mean, they’ve got some speed. I think they’re just a well-rounded team overall.”

“When we get our pregame sheets for scouting, most of the time we have a pretty good idea of who is going to be in there. I probably pick six or seven guys. I would say, though, I’m going to have to know maybe 11 guys because I really don’t know who they’re going to round out the lineup with. I would say there’s some guys that it looks like they do a really good job with the breaking balls. There’s some guys that look like they do a really good job with heaters. I don’t think they’re built one way.”

Morton faced the Brewers once during the regular season back on August 1 and allowed three hits and two runs over six innings in a 2-1 loss.

Milwaukee will go with right-hander Corbin Burnes who should be a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award after turning in a banner season. Burnes made 28 starts and posted a 2.43 ERA and a 1.63 FIP. His 35.6% K-rate led all qualified starters in 2021 with Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler finishing at distant second at 29.1%.

Burnes only faced the Braves once during the regular season and it was arguably his worst start of the season where he allowed nine hits and five runs in just four innings. Atlanta scored four runs in the first but went on to lose 9-5. While it is good that the Braves have had some recent success against Burnes, they shouldn’t expect it to be that easy on Friday.

“Just the stuff was really, really good. And you watch a video of him, and it’s like it’s even better than what I remembered, quite honestly, Brian Snitker said of Burnes. “I just remember I think we scored four runs in the first inning, which I thought, man, that’s pretty good off this guy, because you just look at his numbers. I was looking at the left and right slugs are almost nonexistent against him.”

So there is no doubt that the Braves will have their work cut out for them but they are feeling pretty good to be in the position they are in. The addition of Morton along with the added experience of Max Fried and Ian Anderson give them hope that their own big three can match up well against Milwaukee’s.

“It’s big. That’s why we got Charlie when we signed him and it is, it’s different,” Snitker said of Morton’s addition for the playoffs. “Ian’s a year older — Max, Charlie — Ynoa has come a long way since then. And it was, pretty much last year we were just putting together, piecing it together, literally. But this year I feel good. I like where our bullpen is at. I like our starting options and we’ve been kind of playing on edge for a long time now. I’m anxious to get going.”
