Atlanta is still on top in the NL East but a lot of their cushion is gone following a 2-5 trip.

The Atlanta Braves salvaged a series split in their series against the Colorado Rockies with a big 9-2 win Sunday afternoon. They finished their seven-game western trip with a 2-5 record and saw their lead in the NL East cut to just two games over the Philadelphia Phillies. Also lurking are the New York Mets who have suddenly won seven of ten to climb back above the .500 mark. New York will enter play Monday 3.5 games back.

The Braves have Labor Day off and will begin a crucial nine-game home stand with a three-game series against the Washington Nationals Tuesday. Atlanta has three games against the Nationals, three against the Marlins and then three against the Rockies following an off day all at Truist Park. All three of those teams are well below .500 on the season and the Braves will need to pad their lead before they head back out west for a trip that will take them to San Francisco, Arizona and San Diego.

Philadelphia has also won seven of ten and avoided a sweep at the hands of the Marlins with a 4-3 win in extra innings. They will head north to Milwaukee where they will begin a three-game series against the central leading Brewers Monday before returning home for a four-game series against the Rockies. Philadelphia has won all four matchups with Milwaukee this season.

The Mets will wrap up their series against the Nationals with an afternoon game Monday and will then head to Miami for a three game series. New York has gone 6-6 against the Marlins so far this season. From there they will return home where they wrap up the week with a three-game series against the Yankees.

The Braves launched four more homers and end their road trip on a good note.

After a string of one-run losses, the Atlanta Braves scored early and often in a blowout 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies Sunday afternoon at Coors Field.

It didn’t take long for the Braves’ offense to get rolling as Ozzie Albies jumped on the first pitch of the game from Ryan Feltner and drove it out for a solo home run. It was Albies third homer in as many games and his 26th of the season.

Atlanta blew the game open in the third. Morton led the inning off with a single and then advanced to third on a single by Jorge Soler. After a walk to Freddie Freeman, Austin Riley lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Morton to make it 2-0.

That would bring Adam Duvall to the plate who jumped on a hanging 2-2 curveball and drove it out to center for a three-run home run. That was Duvall’s second homer of the series and No. 31 on the season.

Morton was in control from the early going. He allowed a one out single to Raimel Tapia in the first. Tapia advanced all the way to third on an errant pick off throw by Morton but was left stranded as Trevor Story lined out to Soler for the final out.

The Braves would add some insurance runs in the seventh against Rockies rookie right-hander Julian Fernandez. Soler hit a two-out double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Atlanta will wrap up a seven-game road trip Sunday.

After suffering yet another one-run loss Saturday, the Atlanta Braves will try to salvage a series split when they wrap up a seven-game road trip against the Colorado Rockies. Atlanta opened their trip with a three-game sweep in Los Angeles. They took the opener in Colorado 6-5 but then dropped the next two games 4-3 and 7-6. They still hold a two game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East standings but the Mets are now just 3.5 back as things are tightening up with just four weeks remaining in the regular season.

Charlie Morton will be on the mound for the Braves Sunday and is coming off of a great August. Morton allowed three hits and one run over six innings in his last start against the Dodgers. He has allowed three runs or less in nine of his last 10 starts. He allowed just 11 runs in 35 innings in August to go along with 46 strikeouts and just seven walks over that span.

The Rockies had planned to start Austin Gomber in Sunday’s game but he was placed on the injured list Saturday with a stress fracture in his back which will end his season. Instead, Colorado will call up right-hander Ryan Feltner from Double-A to make his major league debut. Feltner has a 2.85 ERA and a 3.52 FIP in 72 2/3 innings for Hartford. FanGraphs has him ranked as the Rockies’ 18th best prospect with a 40 Future Value.
