The two teams will meet again in the rubber match Sunday.

The Atlanta Braves were unable to come up with a big hit in a 5-0 loss to Logan Webb and the San Francisco Giants Saturday night.

The Braves quickly found themselves behind as Tommy La Stella sent the fifth pitch over the wall in right to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead. Atlanta tried to answer in the home half of the first as Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley both reached on singles but Dansby Swanson grounded out to leave them stranded.

San Francisco struck again in the third. Huascar Ynoa struck out Mike Yastrzemski to begin the inning but then allowed a double to pitcher Logan Webb. LaMonte Wade followed with a single to put runners at the corners. La Stella then lifted a sacrifice fly to Jorge Soler in right, Webb tagged and scored on the play to make it 2-0. Ynoa then walked Buster Posey but retired Brandon Crawford on a great over the shoulder play by Ozzie Albies.

The Braves left two more men on in the third as Freddie Freeman and Riley both singled but were left stranded as Swanson flew out to end the inning.

Ynoa didn’t really have his best stuff but he was able to keep Atlanta in the game. He pitched around a two-out walk in the fourth and retired the side in order in the fifth. Crawford worked a one-out walk off of Ynoa in the sixth. Wilmer Flores then lifted a fly ball that dropped in between Albies, Soler and Joc Pederson. Soler made a heads up play firing the ball into second in time to force out Crawford. Ynoa then struck out Alex Dickerson to retire the side.

That would be the end of the night for Ynoa who allowed three hits, three walks and two runs over six innings. He struck out three while throwing 96 pitches.

Atlanta had another great opportunity to score in the sixth as Freeman reached on an infield single to lead off the inning. Austin Riley then grounded to third but Flores’ throw to second sailed into right field to put runners at the corners with no one out. Webb would dig in again however and retire Swanson on a pop out for the first out. Travis d’Arnaud then grounded back to Webb who fired to second for the double play to end the inning.

The Giants added an insurance run in the seventh when Yastrzemski took Richard Rodriguez deep to make it 3-0. They got two more in the eighth off of Chris Martin who allowed a run-scoring single to Darin Ruf and an RBI double to Yastrzemski.

Webb would give way for a pinch-hitter in the seventh. He continued his dominant performance in August allowing five hits over seven scoreless innings. Webb struck out six and walked one while throwing 98 pitches.

With Webb out of the game, the Braves threatened again in the eighth against Tyler Rogers. Albies reached on an infield single and then moved up to second on a single by Soler. Freeman then struck out on three pitches for the first out. Riley ripped a liner with a 108 mph exit velocity right at Flores at third for the second out. Swanson then grounded softly to La Stella to end the threat.

The Braves had their chances but were unable to cash them in. They left eight runners on base in the game and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Albies, Soler, Freeman and Riley combined to go 7-for-12. The rest of the lineup was 0-for-16.

Atlanta falls to 69-59 on the season and now have a 4.5 game lead over the Phillies who defeated the Diamondbacks Saturday. The Braves will face the Giants in the rubber match of the series Sunday before heading out on a west coast trip.

Atlanta staged a late comeback in Friday’s series opener and hung on for a 6-5 win. They enter play Saturday with a 5.5 game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. Huascar Ynoa will get the start for the Braves Saturday while the Giants will counter with righty Logan Webb.

News and notes from Saturday’s pregame.

After Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the Atlanta Braves will head west for the first of two road trips that will close out the final month of the season. The Braves will begin a three-game series in Los Angeles Monday against the World Champion Dodgers and will wrap up the trip with a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

Ian Anderson is slated to return to the rotation for Sunday’s series finale against the Giants. A healthy Anderson will be a significant boost to a rotation that has by and large pitched well during the Braves’ recent surge to the top of the NL East standings.

“I’m hoping that when we get back this time, he does the same thing that he did last year when we brought him up,” Snitker said of Anderson’s return. “He had a couple of really good outings so, at some point in time we have got to get him back in the mix. He feels good, he’s been stretched out and we’ll be excited to get him back out there.”

Anderson has made 18 starts this season and has a 3.56 ERA and a 3.60 FIP in 96 innings. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his final start before the All-Star break and was later placed on the injured list due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder.

Six-man rotation a possibility

Atlanta will have to make a roster move Sunday to activate Anderson and will presumedly have six starters on the roster. Snitker has said over the last week that the team could go with a six-man rotation during the upcoming road trip but he was noncommittal Saturday saying only that it was a possibility that they have talked about.

“We’ll just see. With the lack of off days, we have the ability to do that,” Snitker said when asked about a possible six-man rotation. “Whether or not we will I don’t know.”

If the Braves were to stick with a normal rotation, then it appears that Touki Toussaint would be the odd man out. It isn’t clear what the corresponding move will be when Anderson is activated Sunday but on paper, Josh Tomlin or Jesse Chavez look like options. Toussaint could potentially fill that multiple inning relief role if needed.

“Probably keep him in the pen,” Snitker said of what they would do with Toussaint if they opted not to use a six-man rotation. “He would be the option obviously to pop in there and that’s what we talked about doing down the road. He’s not going to be away from starting so long that he couldn’t go out there and throw seven innings.”

That last sentence could be a clue that going with six starters on this trip is the likely scenario, but Snitker isn’t ready to diverge where Toussaint might drop into the mix.

Eddie Rosario’s role

The Braves activated outfielder Eddie Rosario from the injured list on Friday but he didn’t play. Snitker said that for now, Rosario will be utilized off the bench.

“He’s on our bench right now. I’m focused, we’re focused right now on winning games and not any individual,” Snitker answered when asked about Rosario’s role. “He’ll work in wherever he works in. There’s not a plan to just because he’s here. He’ll come off the bench, he’ll be available. Last time I looked those two corner outfielders we have are doing pretty good.”

The Braves remade their outfield for the second half with the additions of Rosario, Joc Pederson, Adam Duvall and Jorge Soler. Rosario was on the injured list at the time of the trade due to an abdominal strain. The additions, along with reliever Richard Rodriguez have paid immediate dividends for Atlanta.

Pederson is hitting .254/.341/.421 with four homers and a 107 wRC+ in 127 plate appearances. Duvall is hitting .207/.310/.460 with six homers and a 103 wRC+ in 100 plate appearances. Soler has hit .274/.398/.524 with six homers and a 146 wRC+ in 104 plate appearances.

Jorge Soler will look to continue his hot stretch Saturday against the Giants.

The Atlanta Braves will try to make it two straight wins Saturday night when they continue their series against the San Francisco Giants at Truist Park. The Braves took the opener 6-5 and will be looking to clinch a series win Saturday. Huascar Ynoa will be on the mound for Atlanta while the Giants will counter with right-hander Logan Webb.

Brian Snitker will stick with the same lineup for Saturday’s game. Jorge Soler had three hits on Friday, including the go-ahead three-run home, and is hitting .333/.469/.708 over his last seven games. Travis d’Arnaud will be back behind the plate and hitting sixth while Adam Duvall and Joc Pederson round out the outfield grouping.

Ynoa will make his third start since returning from the injured list.

The Atlanta Braves will try to keep the pressure on the rest of the NL East Saturday evening when they continue a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants. The Braves took the opener Friday with a come-from-behind 6-5 win thanks to a four-run seventh that was capped off by a big three-run home run by Jorge Soler. Atlanta enters play Saturday with a 69-58 record and a 5.5 game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the division standings.

Brian Snitker announced before Friday’s game that Huascar Ynoa and Ian Anderson would start the remainder of the series against San Francisco. A couple of off days earlier this week allowed Snitker to juggle the rotation and give Drew Smyly and Charlie Morton and extra day of rest.

Ynoa will make his third start since returning from the injured list Saturday. His emergence has been one of the biggest surprises of the 2021 season. He returned from the injured list on August 17 and picked up where he left off allowing just three hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings against the Marlins. Ynoa allowed four hits, three runs and struck out nine over six innings in his last start against the Yankees.

The Giants will counter with right-hander Logan Webb who has put together a solid 2021 season. Atlanta will have their work cut out for them as Webb has been lights out in August posting a 1.72 ERA in five starts this month. He allowed five hits, one run and struck out seven in his last start in Oakland. He has allowed two earned runs or less in 12 straight starts dating back to May 11.

Soler had three hits in Friday’s win and is hitting .333/.469/.708 with seven walks and three home runs over his last seven games for Atlanta. Austin Riley added two more hits and drove in a run while raising his season line to .303/.376/.535 for the season. He is hitting .429/.467/.571 over his last seven.
