The Braves are really swinging the bat well right now and the hits kept on coming as they battered the Marlins

Although the Marlins found themselves with an early lead, the Braves eventually made a furious surge into the lead and eventually blew out the Marlins by the score of 12-2.

The first inning was a story of how there are so many different ways to end up with just one run in an inning. In the top of the first, the Braves loaded up the bases by coaxing three walks out of Braxton Garrett to start the game. The next three batters for Atlanta all recorded outs, and were pretty fortunate that Dansby Swanson’s groundout plated Ozzie Albies to put the Braves ahead early. That lead lasted all of one pitch in the bottom of the first, as Jazz Chisholm pulverized the first pitch he saw from Touki Toussaint and sent it flying a very long way. The Braves basically had to be extremely patient and fortunate just to get one run in the first, while the Marlins wasted no time undoing all of Atlanta’s work to begin the game.

Miami wasn’t done going deep in this one after Chisholm’s dinger. Touki was one strike away from getting out of the second inning in clean fashion and you had to like his chances against the light-hitting Isan Diaz. Instead, Diaz uncorked a moonshot of his own on a sinker that was right in the middle of the strike zone. Diaz’s fourth home run of the season made it 2-1 in favor of the Marlins and there were early signs that this was going to be yet another game in 2021 where Miami proved to be formidable opposition for the Braves.

Things changed in a major way in the fourth inning, which was the moment when the Braves cracked the game wide open. Braxton Garrett’s fifth-and-sixth walks of the game to lead off the fourth (including a walk for Touki Toussaint) were enough for Marlins manager Don Mattingly to go to his bullpen to help see his team out of this jam. Paul Campbell entered the game at this point and the Braves proceeded to tee off on him. Ozzie Albies hit a single to tie the game at two, then Freddie Freeman sent one soaring into the shrubbery beyond the right field fence to make it 5-2 Atlanta at that point.

Austin Riley kept it going by hitting a gapper for a double, then Dansby Swanson promptly plated Riley with a single to extend the lead to four runs. That brought Adam Duvall to the plate, who was facing his former employers for the first time since the trade that brought him back to Atlanta. Duvall already has a handful of homers in Braves-Marlins games in 2021 and tonight he hit his first home run in this season series as a member of the Braves. His two run shot actually did some literal damage to the ballpark and it also did some figurative damage to the scoreboard, capping off a big seven-run inning for the Braves.

Atlanta still wasn’t done scoring, as they scored two runs in both the sixth and the seventh innings. The two runs in the sixth came after Ozzie Albies hit one up the middle and off of a diving Jazz Chisholm’s glove for a two-run single. The next two runs came when Dansby Swanson got a rally started by hustling out an infield single with two outs after review. Adam Duvall walked after that, then Travis d’Arnaud smacked a double into center field to put another two runs on the board. Again, this all started because Dansby Swanson was still hustling hard with two outs while up by eight runs at the time. He’s playing some great baseball at the moment and that is proof that he’s not taking any plate appearances off, either.

While all of that was going on at the plate for the Braves, Touki Toussaint had actually settled into his start quite nicely. Touki eventually made it into the seventh inning, with those two home runs being the only major blemishes on what was another night for the young right-hander. He finished the night with seven strikeouts, three hits and two walks. Edgar Santana and Jacob Webb finished the job for the rest of the game, as both relievers threw scoreless stints this evening and held the Marlins at just those two runs. The Braves had a lot more, as the game ended 12-2 in favor of Atlanta.

Like a recording booth following the end of a verse from Big K.R.I.T., the Braves have suddenly caught fire. They’ve won 11 out of their last 13 games and have gone from being one game under .500 and two-and-a-half games behind the NL East leaders to being seven games over .500 and one-and-a-half games ahead as NL East leaders, themselves. It appears as if the Braves have righted the ship and with the schedule still looking very manageable going forward, Atlanta can potentially keep this going for the foreseeable future.

Let’s keep the good times rolling.

The Braves are currently one of the hottest teams in baseball at the moment, and it’s time for them to hopefully continue their hot streak with a big series against the Marlins. However, the Marlins are also on a four-game winning streak of their own. Something’s got to give, and hopefully it’s the Braves giving us fans a victory to celebrate at the end of the night.

d’Arnaud had a day off yesterday, but he’s back at it today.

The lineups for tonight’s game between the Braves and the Marlins have been released, so let’s go ahead and talk about them.

As usual, let’s start with the Braves:

Travis d’Arnaud gets the nod to start at catcher after taking Sunday off in favor of Stephen Vogt. Meanwhile, Joc Pederson is also sitting as Guillermo Heredia gets an opportunity to play center field and bat eighth tonight. The top six is filled with the usual suspects that you would expect to see at this point in the season.

Meanwhile, here’s how the Marlins are looking:

Jesus Sanchez had been on the 10-day IL for reasons related to COVID-19, but he’s been activated after doing a rehab stint in the minors. He’ll be making his first major league appearance since he nearly hit for the cycle on July 11 against, you guessed it, the Braves. Meanwhile, Jazz Chisholm is getting the start at shortstop and batting leadoff today, in lieu of Miguel Rojas.

The Marlins have given Braves fits here in 2021. That was all in the first half of the season, and things have changed here in the second half. Adam Duvall is proof of that.

After sweeping the Nationals in Washington and claiming first place for their own for the first time all season, the Atlanta Braves are now rolling in high gear as they continue this road trip with the first of three games against the Marlins.

One of the reasons why this is a pretty notable game is the fact that this is Adam Duvall’s return to the team that took him in after the Braves decided not to re-sign him ahead of this current season. Duvall did pretty well in a Marlins uniform but it really seemed like he saved his best for whenever the Braves rolled around. Back on April 13, Duvall racked up 7 RBIs against Atlanta and then added another 4 RBIs against the Braves on July 4. Duvall finished his stint with the Marlins with five home runs hit in just 12 games against the Braves. Needless to say, we are currently overjoyed as fans to know that Duvall is going to start this Braves/Marlins series with the Braves and the Marlins will surely miss the production he had against Atlanta this season.

The pitcher who will be greeting the Braves on the mound tonight will be Braxton Garrett, who is making his seventh start of the 2021 campaign this evening. Garrett has given up at least two runs in five of those six starts and his past three starts have been really interesting to observe. Starting on July 24 against the Padres, Garrett actually went seven inning and only gave up two runs in a win for Miami. He continued those good vibes into his August 5 start against the Mets — he did give up five hits and walked four batters but nobody crossed the plate to score a run while he was on the mound in that one. Then the Padres got a second chance at him a few days ago and they tagged him for five runs in just 3.1 innings. The obvious hope here is that the Braves are the team that compounds Garrett’s struggles as a starter this season, instead of being part of what looked like a turnaround for a little bit for Garrett.

Meanwhile on the Braves’ side of things, Touki Toussaint will be returning to the mound for his sixth start of this season. Touki was fantastic in his first two starts, hit a major blip in his third start, and then had a couple of decent outings for his most recent two starts. Overall, Touki has been showing some promising stuff here in 2021 — aside from that absolute clunker he threw against the Brewers on July 30th, Touki has allowed two runs on less in the rest of his other starts and he’s also made it at least five innings into the game in those other starts as well. Hopefully Touki can keep on giving the Braves some really good stuff tonight, as he’ll be facing a Marlins team that has not really been hitting the ball well at their home ballpark in Miami this season. If Touki gets lit up by a Marlins team that has a 95 wRC+ and just a .131 Isolated Power number at home, it’ll truly be a crying shame.

The Marlins have given the Braves fits this season, as Miami actually has a 7-6 edge on Atlanta this season. With that being said, the Braves have been a completely different team here in the second half of the season and this is the first time that the Marlins will be seeing this new look Braves team. Will the Fish continue being a thorn in Atlanta’s side, or will the Braves start consolidating their position as the top dogs in the NL East by continuing their winning ways as of late? It’s time for the Braves to keep on taking care of business against weaker opposition.
