Toussaint deserved a better fate.

Touki Toussaint pitched well again but the Atlanta Braves’ offense was powerless against Aaron Nola in a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Toussaint was the story in this game for the Braves as he turned in another masterful performance. He sat down the first six batters he faced and struck out three of them.

Alec Bohm singled to lead off the third inning but was erased on a 6-4-3 double play. The only blemish on Toussaint’s line came in the fourth inning when Jean Segura lifted a long fly to left that landed in the seats for a solo home run. The ball left the bat at 93 mph and had a expected batting average of .150. Still, it was a home run at Citizens Bank Park and the Braves trailed 1-0. He allowed two more singles in the fourth but got Odubel Herrera to ground out to end the threat.

Toussaint allowed a one-out single to Ronald Torreyes in the fifth but struck out Segura with a nasty curveball to leave him stranded. He added two more K’s in the sixth and then two more in the seventh.

Toussaint has given the Braves a much-needed shot in the arm. He allowed five hits, one run and struck out a career-high 10 over seven innings. He didn’t walk a single batter and threw just 90 pitches.

The problem for Atlanta was that Aaron Nola was equally as good and matched him pitch for pitch. Dansby Swanson reached on an error in the second but was left stranded. Austin Riley hit a two-out double in the fourth but Swanson struck out to end the inning. Joc Pederson had an infield single in the sixth but Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman couldn’t bring him home.

Atlanta’s best chance to score against Nola came in the seventh when Riley led off with another double. He advanced to third on a ground out by Swanson. Nola then retired Abraham Almonte on a shallow fly ball that wasn’t deep enough to score Riley. Guillermo Heredia grounded to third for the final out of the inning.

Chris Martin took over in the eighth and promptly served up a solo home run to Ronald Torreyes to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 2-0.

Nola came back out for the ninth and quickly struck out Albies before getting Freeman to line out to left. He got ahead in the count to Riley but left a 1-2 fastball up that Riley drove out to right for a solo home run.

That would be it for Nola who would give way to Ranger Suarez. Nola allowed four hits, one run and struck out nine over 8 2/3 innings. Suarez struck out Swanson to end the game.

Atlanta falls to 48-50 on the season and drop a game behind Philadelphia in the NL East standings. They are 4.5 games back of the Mets pending the outcome of their game against Toronto Sunday. The Braves split their series in Philadelphia and will now head to New York where they will begin a five-game series with a doubleheader Monday.

Smith is back behind the plate for Sunday’s afternoon game.

The Atlanta Braves will try to lock down a series win Sunday afternoon when they wrap up a four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta exploded for 15 runs in Saturday’s win and will be hoping to carry some of that momentum into Sunday’s series finale.

The Braves will stick with the same group again Saturday with the exception of Kevan Smith who will take over behind the plate. Abraham Almonte went 3-for-5 with a homer in Saturday’s win and will get his third straight start in left field.

Toussaint is looking to build off of a strong debut.

After a blowout win Saturday, the Atlanta Braves will try to secure a huge series win Sunday when they wrap up a four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta took the opener 7-2 on Thursday but took a loss in the second game against Zack Wheeler. They exploded for 17 hits and 15 runs in a blowout win Saturday against Vince Velasquez.

The Braves come into Sunday’s game with a 48-49 record and are tied with the Phillies in the NL East standings. They trail the New York Mets, who will wrap up a three-game series against the Blue Jays Sunday, by four games.

Freddie Freeman hit his 23rd home run of the season Saturday and is 11-for-24 with three home runs over his last seven games. He is hitting .426/.518/.1.253 in July with a 227 wRC+. Joc Pederson snapped an 0-for-13 stretch with four hits, including a homer in Saturday’s win. He is hitting .273/.294/.485 with a double and two home runs in eight games with Atlanta.

Touki Toussaint will make his second start of the season Sunday and will be looking to build off of a strong debut. Toussaint held the Padres to just three hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five, walked two and was showed a more aggressive approach while attacking a good Padres lineup. Toussaint will need to carry that same approach into Sunday’s outing.

The Phillies will counter with righty Aaron Nola who returned from the COVID list earlier this week and allowed seven hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Yankees. He will be making just his third start in July and will be looking to shake off some rust. In his last three starts dating back to June 30, Nola has allowed 22 hits and 15 runs in 16 innings. He is currently carrying a 4.64 ERA for the season but his 3.62 FIP is a full run lower. The Braves tagged him for seven hits and four runs in five innings back on June 8.

Sunday’s game is slated to get underway at 1:05 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
