Morton was outstanding in what may have been the best start of the season for any Braves pitcher.

The Braves entered play on Thursday in dire need of two things: a win and a solid outing from a starting pitcher. They accomplished both feats, thanks in large part to Charlie Morton for an outstanding performance that saw him hold the Cardinals hitless through 61⁄3 innings. The Atlanta offense provided enough support for Morton, enabling the Braves to come away with a 4-0 victory in the series opener.

The game began with each pitcher, Morton and Cardinals starter John Gant, blanking the opposing offense for four innings. The first real scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ronald Acuna and Freddie Freeman began the frame with back-to-back singles, were unable to score as Gant pitched out of trouble.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, however, Atlanta took a 1-0 lead on a two-out solo homer from Guillermo Heredia. The eighth-place hitter battled to a 2-2 count, then blasted a pitch that was well above the strike zone into the opposing bullpen.

This would be all the run support required by Morton, who continued to dazzle. After six innings, the only baserunners to reach for St. Louis were Matt Carpenter and Dylan Carlson, who were hit by pitches. This gave the right-hander a legitimate shot at pitching the first no-hitter by a Braves pitcher since Kent Mercker in 1994.

Meanwhile, the offense went back to work in the bottom-half of the inning, adding two more runs. Ronald Acuna walked to lead off the inning, then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Ozzie Albies followed with a one-out triple to score Acuna and give Atlanta a 2-0 lead. He was then chased home by Abraham Almonte, who doubled to push the advantage to 3-0. Another run would score in the seventh inning as Guillermo Heredia doubled and eventually scored on an Acuna sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 4-0 lead.

Morton pitched into the eighth inning, having allowed only two baserunners and limiting the Cardinals offense to hardly a whimper. They were able to chase the right-hander from the game with two outs after a couple soft singles necessitated a change. Luke Jackson entered and struck out the only batter he faced to end the rally. Morton exited have pitched 72⁄3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and three hits allowed. He generated 18 swings and misses from the St. Louis, utilizing his incredible curveball to keep the opposition off-balance.

Will Smith entered the game in the ninth and slammed the door on a much-needed Atlanta win. Given their recent performance, seeing the bullpen extinguish a small fire then close out the win with limited drama was a welcome sight. Having Charlie Morton throw an absolute gem must have been just as therapeutic for the starting rotation, who have seen their share of struggles as well. A shutout win should do wonders for changing the mood in the clubhouse, not to mention allowing the Braves to gain a game in the standings after the Mets lost on Thursday night.

The Braves now sit 6.5 games out of first-place in the NL East. If the staff can build on this performance by Morton and the offense can continue their ascent, this Atlanta team is capable of reeling off a winning streak that would put them right back into the mix.

The Braves need a win pretty badly.

Tempers are running hot for the Braves, which is not terribly surprising given their propensity to underperform this season. A win would be a welcome sight for the club and the fanbase after yet another frustrating defeat last night. Atlanta needs to come out with some urgency against the Cardinals this weekend, which will hopefully translate into some momentum going forward. Tune in with us and join in the comments.

Run prevention has been a tall task of late for Atlanta.

The Atlanta Braves will try to stop the bleeding Thursday night when they begin a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Truist Park. Charlie Morton will get the start for Atlanta while St. Louis will go with right-hander John Gant.

Brian Snitker and the Braves will deploy an identical lineup to the one used Wednesday, aside from the return of William Contreras in the seventh spot. Abraham Almonte is back in there at cleanup while Guillermo Heredia gets another start in center and will be hitting eighth.

Mike Soroka gave an update on the exploratory surgery that he had on his injured Achilles and is still hoping to pitch at some point in 2021.

The road back from a torn Achilles tendon has been a hard one for Mike Soroka, but it seems that things are once again progressing. Soroka spoke about his injury Thursday afternoon and went into detail about the exploratory surgery that he was forced to undergo last month.

“I know usually, things seem pretty vague on our side of things sometimes, but for a while we didn’t know and it was pretty hard,” Soroka said when describing what led to the decision to get the Achilles looked at again. Everything was going really well up through four or five, six months and then I just kind of started to slow down and then even kind of go backwards for a minute and we had to figure out why.”

The surgery revealed that Soroka’s body had rejected the sutures which normally would have been absorbed. That caused inflammation in the area and the problems that he was experiencing. The good news is, there was no problems with the Achilles and now it is just a matter of Soroka rebuilding strength in his calf.

“Even right out of the cast two weeks out of surgery, it looked like a new ankle, everything looked clean again,” Soroka said. “It looked like it should and the great part is the Achilles is completely healed from the first time. Everything looks great there and basically it’s just a matter of calf strengthening because it’s had quite a bit of time down and that’ll be basically my entire rehab moving forward. It was really a relief to get out of there and know that what I was feeling was gone”

Since there was no further damage to the Achilles, there is renewed optimism about Soroka possibly returning at some point this season. Make no mistake though, he still has a lengthy process ahead of him and a number of areas that will need to be checked off. He talked about the need of being honest with himself and taking things week to week.

“It’s all going to be based on strength in the calf. I spent a lot of time down, and it’s a muscle that requires a lot of work,” Soroka said of the rehab process. “Going forward, I know that they’re not in any hurry to put a date on things, but anything’s a possibility and I love to love to hear that I love to hear optimism. Right now it’s about getting back to walking, running, being able to do those just for daily strength, manage daily inflammation if there is any, and it’s just going to be taking it week by week.”

Soroka will be in a boot for about another week. While there is a lot of focus on regaining his mobility and his strength, he has been throwing with his back knee elevated.

“We are throwing with my back knee elevated. It’s actually kind of a drill we do growing up. You put your back foot on the chair to practice getting over your front leg. It’s not that intense, we’re throwing in the cages right now. All of it is to keep the arm going. Obviously, the longer time you take off from just having it move and do what it’s supposed to do, the longer rebuild time you need to get back.”

As anxious as he is to return to the mound, Soroka was careful not to place any timetable or expectations ahead of him. As dire as things are currently with the team’s performance, there is no incentive for the Braves to rush him back before he is ready. Despite the team’s struggles, Soroka hasn’t given up on pitching in meaningful games later this season.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to be back as soon as possible,” Soroka said. “That’s obviously the goal in any process, but it’s going to be something that I’m going to have to be honest with myself. It’s going to be something that we’re going to have to take even week by week even when I’m back on the mound. Whenever that might be, we’re going to have to be honest with ourselves. Obviously, my goal is to help this team in whatever respect that may be. I know we all think that there’s something that’s going to click soon and I still think we’re going to be there in September or October fighting for spots and I’d love to be there.”

Muller allowed four hits and two runs in one inning in his debut in Wednesday’s loss to the Red Sox. His short stay isn’t terribly surprising as it came as a result of Tucker Davidson’s early exit in Tuesday’s game. Atlanta needed a fresh arm for the bullpen Wednesday and Muller was initially scheduled to start for Gwinnett. He got in the game after Ian Anderson struggled and exited after the fourth inning. He will return to the Stripers rotation for now but could play a bigger part down the road.

The Braves are set to host the Cardinals for a four game set.

The Braves open a four-game series with Cardinals on Thursday, looking to recover from an agonizing sweep at the hands of the Red Sox over the past two days. The Atlanta pitching staff allowed ten runs in each game, effectively wasting a mini resurgence from the offense. As St. Louis arrives, the Braves will turn to Charlie Morton as they look to find some stability on the mound.

Morton enters play on Thursday having produced a 5-3 record with a 4.50 ERA in 13 starts this season. The right-hander also boasts a 10.2 K/9, which means his surface stats are hardly untenable. The frustrating aspect of Morton’s season thus far has been his inability to avoid big innings. Recently the 37-year-old has been victimized by singular big innings, which have ruined otherwise impressive outings. A 3.47 xFIP confirms that some bad luck has played a role in the inflated ERA for Morton, as does his 17.1% HR/FB rate, which would be the highest mark across a full season for his career.

The Cardinals offense is around league average, ranking ninth in the National League in runs scored this season. The offseason addition of Nolan Arenado has, predictably, given them a boost alongside Paul Goldschmidt. Those two powerful right-handed bats are joined by three young contributors in Tommy Edman, Dylan Carlson, and Tyler O’Neill. Throw in Yadier Molina and you can see that Charlie Morton will have quite the task against a deep lineup.

John Gant will start the game for St. Louis, entering play with a 4-4 record and a 3.36 ERA. Contrary to Morton, Gant has enjoyed very favorable luck for the Cardinals this season, as his 5.46 xFIP would suggest. The game between the two should close over time, the Braves just have to hope that they can be the beneficiaries.

Some may remember Gant as a member of the Braves farm system, as he was acquired from the Mets along with Rob Whalen in exchange for Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe. 16 months later, the Braves dealt Gant to the Cardinals for Jaime Garcia, who was later dealt for Huascar Ynoa.

The Braves have seen their offense rejuvenated over the past three games, which bodes well for them against Gant. The club enters play 7.5 games behind the Mets in the division, which indicates that some consistency must be found soon, especially amongst the pitching staff. Charlie Morton will get the first chance to right the ship for Atlanta and start the series with a bang.

Atlanta is at a low point after dropping six of seven.

If this isn’t rock bottom it has to be close to it. Things have gone from bad to worse for the Atlanta Braves, who again fell to the Boston Red Sox 10-8 after the bullpen was unable to protect a late lead. While the bullpen is firmly in the crosshairs, it was the second straight game that Atlanta’s starter failed to make it past four innings. Tucker Davidson left Tuesday’s game in the third with a left forearm strain and Ian Anderson piled up 87 pitches while allowing seven hits and four runs in just four innings Wednesday, though he did suffer some bad luck as well.

Key injuries and underperformance have rendered this team helpless and that puts eyes squarely on the Front Office. It may be just mid-June, but this season is slipping away and the pressure to do something to address the roster is mounting by the day. For a Front Office that has moved as deliberately as Atlanta’s in recent years, that is going to be a significant challenge. The correct move wouldn’t be something rash, but at the same time a sense urgency is now in order, though it’s not clear what the Front Office can actually do.

The problem at this juncture is that fixing the roster isn’t a simple task. It goes without saying that the bullpen could use a reliable option or two. Shane Greene may eventually prove to be that, but that hasn’t been the case so far. The rotation too has holes and has been plagued by inconsistency. The likes of Guillermo Heredia and Abraham Almonte have exceeded expectations while filling in in the outfield, but it is also clear that the lineup has a giant-sized hole right in the middle.

Trade deadline chatter will no doubt heat up soon but there has to be a sense or urgency for the Braves at this juncture. In fact, it might already be too late, as Fangraphs’ playoff odds for the Braves are right at around 12 percent. It’s going to take a gigantic effort to get back into contention at this point.

The Cardinals come into Thursday’s series opener with a 35-33 record and fresh off of a three-game sweep of the Marlins. That snapped a stretch where they had lost nine of their last 10 games. They are currently in fourth place but well within striking distance in what has been a surprisingly competitive NL Central.

St. Louis currently ranks ninth in runs scored in the National League. Nolan Arenado has been productive, posting a 124 wRC+ in his first season with the Cardinals. Paul Goldschmidt got off to a cold start but has heated up over the last several weeks. Tyler O’Neill has been killing it (159 wRC+, .412 xwOBA) despite a strikeout rate more than 30 percent higher than his walk rate, and Yadier Molina is still providing above-average production at age 38. Still this isn’t a high-powered offense that is going to put up big numbers on a consistent basis.

A large part of the Cardinals’ recent struggles has been due to injuries in their starting rotation. Jack Flaherty is currently on the injured list, as is Miles Mikolas. The rest of the rotation has struggled of late and are doing their best to keep the team above water. Overall, this is a team that’s played average-to-below across the board, and is one of the teams that has produced considerably less, by fWAR, than the Braves — not that it’s mattered in the standings.

Thursday, June 17, 7:20 p.m. ET (Bally Sports Southeast)

John Gant (12 GS, 56.1 IP, 16.3 K%, 16.3 BB%, 3.36 ERA, 4.99 FIP, 5.46 xFIP, 87 ERA-)

After a successful start to the season, former Brave John Gant will enter Thursday’s series opener looking to bounce back from two straight rough outings. Gant was tagged for five runs in just 1 2/3 innings in his most recent start against the Cubs. He allowed just one hit, but walked five and that lone hit left the yard. In total, Gant has allowed eight hits and 12 earned runs over his last two starts combined. Walks have been an issue for Gant and he will enter Thursday’s start with 42 walks and 42 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings. His ERA is very misleading given that his peripherals across the board are much, much worse.

Charlie Morton (13 GS, 66.0 IP, 26.2 K%, 9.1 BB%, 4.50 ERA, 3.76 FIP, 3.47 xFIP, 111 ERA-)

Like Gant, Charlie Morton will also be trying to put a tough outing behind him. Morton never locked in during his latest start where he allowed four hits, four walks and four runs in just four innings against the Marlins. He has allowed a total of eight runs in his last two starts combined, although only six of those were earned. Morton has pitched well at times but one rough inning each start has skewed his overall numbers.

Friday, June 18, 7:20 p.m. ET (Bally Sports Southeast)

Carlos Martinez (12 GS, 65.0 IP, 15.7K%, 7.8 BB%, 5.54 ERA, 3.99 FIP, 4.83 xFIP, 143 ERA-)

It has been an inconsistent season overall for Carlos Martinez, but he is coming off of a good outing in his last start. Martinez allowed just four hits and two unearned runs in seven innings against the Cubs in his last start. That snapped a stretch where he had allowed a combined 15 earned runs in just 4 2/3 innings over two starts. Ten of those earned runs came back on June 2 when he didn’t make it out of the first inning against the Dodgers.

Max Fried (10 GS, 50.2 IP, 21.8 K%, 8.0 BB%, 4.62 ERA, 4.12 FIP, 4.17 xFIP, 114 ERA-)

Max Fried will make his 11th start of the season for the Braves Friday. Fried allowed five hits and three runs over six innings in his last start against the Marlins. Two of those hits left the ballpark and were the first home runs that Fried had allowed since May 5. He has allowed three runs or less in six of his last seven starts.

Adam Wainwright (13 GS, 79.2 IP, 22.1 K%, 6.6 BB%, 3.95 ERA, 4.22 FIP, 3.91 xFIP, 102 ERA-)

Adam Wainwright will return to Atlanta for Saturday’s start. Thanks to all of the injuries to his rotation-mates, Wainwright has had to play a more important role in the Cardinals’ rotation. He has largely been up to the task, giving them a chance to win on most nights. Wainwright held the Marlins to four hits and two runs over six innings in his last start. He has pitched into the sixth inning in four of his last five starts.

Drew Smyly (11 GS, 56.0 IP, 19.9 K%, 8.1 BB%, 5.63 ERA, 6.01 FIP, 4.90 xFIP, 139 ERA-)

It has been a disappointing season overall for Drew Smyly but he has the distinction of starting both games that the Braves won on the previous road trip, for whatever that is worth. Smyly allowed six hits and two runs over five innings in his last start against the Marlins. His season can be pretty much summed up by looking at his numbers when facing a lineup two or three times. Smyly has a 4.13 ERA the first time through the order. That increases to a 5.40 mark the second time. It jumps to a 9.58 ERA the third time through the order with opponents hitting .326/.396/.605 in those situations. The peripherals tell a similar story.

Kwang Hyun Kim tossed a season-high six innings while allowing three hits and one run in his last start against the Marlins. He did issue a season-high five walks but was able to limit the damage.

TBA

Sunday’s start would have gone to Tucker Davidson but he was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left forearm inflammation. Bryse Wilson pitched Tuesday in Gwinnett and would be lined up to make this start if needed, but the Braves likely won’t announce their plans before Saturday.
