Wilson will make his first spot start of the year.

Bryse Wilson will be the next man up in the Braves’ battered rotation and start Tuesday night’s divisional contest with the Miami Marlins, according to Brian Snitker.

Wilson, who was recalled from the Gwinnett satellite site on Monday as Cole Hamels hit the injured list with shoulder fatigue, has appeared in just four games this season with poor results, pitching to the tune of a 7.04 ERA. The Braves will hope Wilson can cover at least a few innings to save the bullpen.

The Braves won an important first game of a four-game set with the Marlins on Monday night as Huascar Ynoa settled in nicely after a rough first inning. The Braves’ bullpen covered six innings, allowing just one run. The bullpen will likely be counted on once again on Tuesday as the club will hope Wilson can cover at least three or four innings. It’s a great opportunity for the young righty to showcase his stuff after a disappointing first go-round this year.

A wacky first inning provided nearly all of the fireworks

The Braves pulled out a stressful 5-4 win on Monday night.

The lead in the NL East is now four games, and the magic number falls to three. If the Braves want to wrap up the division during this four-game series against the Marlins, they can do it by winning two of the next three.

Huascar Ynoa got the start for the Braves, going three innings and giving way to a bullpen that only allowed one run. Coming into this game, Ynoa and Marlins starter Trevor Rogers had combined for 44 2⁄3 innings at the big league level so it was natural to assume there might be some speedbumps. But after a 74-pitch first inning that saw seven runs cross the plate, this game was shaping up to be absolute chaos.

Ynoa allowed five straight runners to reach in the first, getting BABIP’d to death by some unfortunately-placed ground balls that saw the Marlins go up 3-0. The Braves clawed back into the game in the bottom half of the inning, relying on some clutch two-out hitting, capped off by a two-run double from Austin Riley, to jump out to a 4-3 lead.

Ynoa appeared to calm down after his erratic first inning, stringing together two straight 1-2-3 innings before being lifted for Tyler Matzek. Rogers settled in as well - at one point striking out six straight Braves - but not before Dansby Swanson and Ronald Acuña strung together consecutive doubles in the second inning to tack on another run, making the Braves’ lead 5-3.

Upon Matzek’s entry, Acuña found himself in a position to turn a spectacular play.

After a torrid offensive start for both teams, the offense came screeching to a halt. The Braves did not log a hit after the third inning, and the Marlins were quiet until the late innings. Shane Greene, coming off his worst outing in a Braves uniform on Saturday, allowed a run to score in the top of the eighth, bringing the Marlins to within a run, 5-4. After Will Smith walked pinch hitter Lewis Brinson to load the bases, Starling Marte hit an absolute rocket that looked like it would give the Marlins the lead, but was snagged by Austin Riley.

During the ninth inning, the Braves turned one of the most interesting double plays you will ever see, thanks to some amazing heads up defense from Dansby Swanson.

Hamels made his debut a week ago but did not feel right after tossing a bullpen session.

The Cole Hamels experiment in Atlanta is over before it ever really began.

After making his season debut last week in Baltimore, the Braves have placed Hamels on the 10-day IL, effectively ending his season.

According to Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos, Hamels said his shoulder felt fine following Wednesday’s season debut, but it began to bother him during a recent bullpen session. He was scheduled to start Tuesday night against the Marlins and then likely once more on the final day of the season on Sunday.

The hope was that Hamels would be able to build up enough strength and stamina to serve as one of the Braves’ postseason starters beginning next week, but that is no longer an option. It now appears Max Fried, Ian Anderson and Kyle Wright will be the club’s postseason rotation to start with. Who knows beyond that.

The Braves recalled Bryse Wilson to take Hamels’ roster spot. Tomorrow’s starter will likely be determined by who is needed tonight. Huascar Ynoa will start Monday’s game as the Braves kick off an important four-game series with the Marlins.

Mondays are for baseball

In what will be the final Monday night game of the regular season, the Braves will face the Marlins at Truist Park.

It will be a battle of young hurlers, as the Braves send Huascar Ynoa to the mound, and the Marlins will counter with Trevor Rogers. With his 21 ⅔ career innings, Ynoa serves as the elder statesman in this matchup - Rogers, a rookie, only carries 21 total innings.

There is plenty of division-related intrigue to this series, as the Braves can clinch the division with three victories over the next four games. The Marlins are still tracking for the playoffs however, so they have little ground to lose and cannot afford to take their fins off the gas pedal.

As alluded to in the intro, this is the final Monday night game before the playoffs start, so the intensity is only going to ramp up from here. Since we are being granted this opportunity to congregate one last Monday before the stakes get uncomfortably high, we hope you will take advantage of the remaining time and watch the game with us. Let’s see if we can set a record for most comments during a regular season game.

A slumping Dansby Swanson moving to the ninth spot headlines a series of lineup tweaks

The Braves’ lineup will see a bit of a shakeup Monday night against the Marlins, as Dansby Swanson will bat ninth.

Travis d’Arnaud, whose hot bat helped the Braves take the series from the Mets this weekend, will be deployed as a designated hitter and stay at cleanup. Marcell Ozuna and his special brand of Outfield Adventures will get to play left field.

As a whole, the Braves’ offense has been absurd at times this season, but not without a revolving slump that usually plagues at least one member of the lineup at a time. It is currently Dansby Swanson’s turn, as he is currently mired in a nine-game, 2-for-37 swoon. He will move down to the ninth spot in the lineup.

A few pieces of positive news for Dansby:

His average exit velocity during the slump (90.3 MPH) has been higher than was when he was still getting positive results (87.9 MPH)

His BABIP prior to the slump? .402. His BABIP during it? .054.

During the slump, his strikeout rate over that span (27.9%) is only marginally higher than it had been when the slump started (26%)

His pre-slump walk rate was 7.0%; it has been 9.3% during his swoon

For those of you who prioritize process over results, Dansby likely looks like he is going to be just fine.

Tyler Flowers will bat eighth and catch Huascar Ynoa.

A victory tonight over the Marlins would send the magic number to three

The Braves can take one step closer to their third consecutive National League East title tonight. They will send Huascar Ynoa to the mound to face the division rival Miami Marlins.

Ynoa is coming off a career-best start, during which he pitched four spotless innings against the Baltimore Orioles. A tight lower back kept from him continuing during that start, but Ynoa’s first four frames were electric dynamite as he allowed two hits and no walks while striking out five. It was the most comfortable he has seemed on a big league mound this year.

With some of the recent pitching developments for the Braves’ rotation, an encore performance from Ynoa would be another confidence booster for the team as it tracks towards the playoffs.

Ynoa will face Marlins rookie Trevor Rogers, whom will be making his sixth career start. He has pitched to a 1-1 record with a 6.00 ERA | 5.23 FIP, supported by a 12.43 K/9 rate and 4.29 BB/9. His line has been marred by one abysmal start against the Phillies ten days ago, during which he allowed nine runs (eight earned) over three innings. Otherwise, he has posted several solid outings.

He has been plagued by the home run ball (2.14 HR/9), which can be symptomatic of a pitcher who throws a lot of strikes - and with his aforementioned K/9 rate, Rogers fits the bill. If he keeps the ball around the zone, as he tends to do, the powerful Braves may be able to capitalize.

As the magic number to clinch the NL East is now five, the Braves can make some meaningful headway on locking down the division this week. A win this evening would position the Braves to clinch as soon as Wednesday - but that plan requires a victory tonight.
