Tonight’s game only lasted seven innings, but it was enough for the Braves to scamper ahead and take down the Reds in the first game of four this weekend.

After jumping ahead early with three runs in the first inning, the early offensive output from Atlanta was enough for Max Fried to hold the Reds off until the rain came around and washed away any chance that Cincinnati had of winning.

The Braves started off tonight’s game in ideal fashion. Max Fried threw a 1-2-3 inning to start off the game, and then the first three batters for the blue-sleeved Braves all made it on base. Ronald Acuña Jr. kicked things off with a double, then Ozzie Albies got on base with a single. Freddie Freeman’s at-bat was exceptional for two reasons. Firstly, he battled Anthony DeSclafani for eight pitches. Secondly, the eighth pitch was the one that Freddie lifted into the opposite field seats in left field for a three-run homer. That gave the Braves an early lead and they were in control from that point forward.

Atlanta got a big lift from Max Fried, who was on “Maximum” mode when it came to his performance tonight. After a wobble in the second inning where he gave up three singles (including a two-out RBI single from none other than Jose Peraza), Fried settled into the game quite nicely after that. He only gave up one hit the rest of the way and he was actually on 76 pitches when the game was stopped due to rain.

There’s no telling whether or not he would have made it through that inning and continued on, but with the way things had been going from the second inning on (which is when he retired 11 straight batters up until Brian McCann committed catcher’s interference in the sixth inning) you would have been safe betting on Fried to at least make it through seven. In the end it didn’t matter, but it would have been intriguing to see. Some good defense from Josh Donaldson also helped the Braves in their pursuit of victory tonight.

While Max Fried and the defense were collectively able to hold Cincinnati’s offense at bay, Atlanta’s offense was not done scoring. It took a while but the next run eventually came in the sixth inning, which is when Adam Duvall once again made his presence felt after what was apparently an entirely too long stint at Triple-A. Duvall led off the sixth inning by hitting one about a section or two away from where Freddie’s first inning bomb landed. The solo dinger made it 4-1, and that’s where things stood going into the top of the seventh inning.

Max Fried threw one pitch and then the clouds opened up and we were getting a good old fashioned summer storm in Georgia. With no end to the bad weather around SunTrust Park in sight, the powers-that-be eventually called the game right then and there and the Braves picked up win number 65 of the season.

Rain-shortened wins count just the same as regulation wins, and the Braves ended up picking their third win in a row and also picked up a half-game on the Nationals as well. The Phillies won today, so that means that Washington and Philadelphia are now both seven games behind your 65-45 Atlanta Braves.

The Braves are back home and they’re bringing the Reds with them.

After making their way through Philadelphia and Washington and coming out of those trials and tribulations looking good, the Braves are returning back to SunTrust Park to take on the Reds for the next four games. There probably won’t be any fisticuffs tonight, but hopefully we’ll see some excitement and a calm bullpen performance for a change. Let’s see if it results in another win for the Braves.

The Braves desperately needed to revamp their bullpen for the playoff push, and GM Alex Anthopoulos did just that prior to the Trade Deadline, adding veteran relievers Shane Greene, Mark Melancon and Chris Martin on Wednesday. All three players have been added to the Braves’ 25-man roster in time for Thursday night’s tilt with the Cincinnati Reds.

To make room for the trio of relievers, the Braves optioned AJ Minter, Chad Sobotka and Jeremy Walker to Triple-A Gwinnett. This was a fairly expected move given all three players had minor league options remaining. Assuming they pitch well over the next month with the Stripers, one would assume they will rejoin the Braves at some point in September once the rosters expand.

Earlier today, Talking Chop wrote about what we can expect from Martin, an unusual reliever with an unusual story.

When meeting with the media prior to Thursday’s game, Greene confirmed that he will be the team’s closer moving forward. This should not come as a surprise given Luke Jackson’s struggles over the last month. Melancon and Martin are also capable of working the 9th inning if the situation calls for it.

The lineups for tonight’s game between the Braves and the Reds have been revealed. The Braves also took the lineup announcement to reveal that they’ll be donning the good old Hank Aaron-era throwbacks. It’s always nice to see those uniforms, and here’s the lineup that will be wearing those uniforms for Thursday’s game:

Brian McCann will be catching Max Fried tonight, and he’ll be hitting fifth. Adam Duvall slides down to sixth and Ender Inciarte goes down to sevneth. Hopefully this crew will continue to produce like they have in recent days.

Meanwhile, here’s what the Reds are looking like tonight:

Max Fried will get the start for the Braves as they kick off a four-game series against a feisty Reds team

It’s the first day of August, which means that it’s the first day after the trade deadline and the first day of the stretch run of the baseball regular season as we enter the final two months of this year’s campaign. Additionally, it’s also the first day of a brand new series as the fightin’ Reds come into town to face off against our Braves.

Both of these teams were busy at or near the deadline, so this means that the Reds will have a bit of a different look to them when compared to when the Braves visited them in Ohio earlier this season. However, they won’t be starting their prized deadline acquisition on the mound until Saturday’s game. Instead, Anthony DeSclafani will be getting the ball to start tonight’s game for Cincinnati. One thing about DeSclafani that stands out is that he can rack up some strikeouts. Ever since his first start of June, he’s got a K/9 of 10.10 over 49 innings of work. He’s definitely been getting better as the season progresses, since his 2.94 ERA and 3.04 FIP over the aforementioned time span is well below his 4.01 ERA and 4.41 FIP for the season.

At first glance, you could say that this means that the Braves are probably catching him at a bad time and probably would have been better off running into him earlier in the season in Cincinnati. With that being said, he’s got the potential to give up a home run or two tonight. During that stretch of 49 innings, he made two consecutive starts against Cleveland and the Cubs where he gave up two homers in each start. I’m not saying that we should expect the Braves to launch his pitches into orbit tonight, but I’m saying that it’s definitely a possibility with the way that we’ve seen this team swing the bat this season.

Meanwhile, Max Fried will be taking the mound and he’ll surely be happy to know that only going five innings won’t put any potential lead that he and the Braves may have in a precarious spot. Fried has lasted exactly five innings in three of his past four starts and in his last start against Philadelphia, he pitched five extremely smooth innings before the Phillies caught onto him and hit a pair of two-run homers off of him in the sixth inning. If the sixth inning is once again Fried’s limit, then he can rest easy knowing that the Braves have shored up their bullpen at the trade deadline and hopefully things won’t be nearly as stressful at that stage of the game.

If you remember, the Braves dropped the series in Cincinnati earlier this season. Additionally, the Reds have been playing just under .500 ball since the All-Star break so while it’s not like they’re hot coming into town like the Royals were, this still isn’t a series to just gloss over. These are four opportunities for the Braves to pick up some ground as the two most important months of the season get underway. Hopefully the Braves can build on their successful road trip and good deadline day with a nice win tonight.
