It really just wasn’t Julio’s night.

The Braves dropped an ugly one to the Cubs Monday night, 8-3.

Julio Teheran walked the tightrope for his first four innings, then the wheels came off in a five-run fifth inning that was ultimately his undoing. All told, he allowed seven runs with nine hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Not exactly the bounceback start he was looking for after last week’s dud against the Mets. He struggled with his command all night, and worked around baserunners in four of the five innings in which he pitched.

Tempers were on display during the second inning. After Willson Contreras hit an opposite field home run, he started chirping at Tyler Flowers, then shouted and gestured into the Braves’ dugout as he rounded the first base bag. When he finished rounding the bases, he and Flowers continued jawing at each other to the point both dugouts eventually cleared. No punches were thrown, but the tense interaction set the tone for the evening.

The Braves were unable to establish any momentum against Jon Lester, and they were not without their chances. They had a good opportunity to bust through in the fourth, as Ronald Acuña, Jr. singled and stole second, but was left stranded there. In the fifth, consecutive hits from Austin Riley and Ozzie Albies put runners at the corners with one out, but they were not able to push either across.

Contreras pushed a run home in the fourth inning to make it a 2-0 Cubs game, but the following inning is where everything fell apart for Julio. Without recording an out, Teheran allowed five consecutive batters to reach base - three of which came around to score while he was still in the game, and the other two after he left - and put the Braves in a 7-0 hole. Chad Sobotka came on to put out the fire, and worked two clean innings in the process. It was a successful return outing for Sobotka.

Nick Markakis got the Braves on board with a two-run single in the sixth inning, making it 7-2. In the top of the eighth, Dansby Swanson brought the Braves one run closer with his 15th home run of the year - a new career high. Old friend Jason Heyward homered off Touki Toussaint in the bottom of the eighth to stretch the score to 8-3.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 8:05pm ET.

Teheran vs. Lester could be a pitcher’s duel or a 14-10 slugfest

The Braves and Cubs have been two of the National League’s best teams thus far in 2019, and tonight they will meet up for a four-game series. By the time this series is over, both teams should have a better idea of how they stack up against some of the league’s best competition.

The Braves have won five consecutive series, and are surely convinced they can keep the ball rolling. The Cubs are 4-6 in their last 10, and hanging on to the NL Central lead by a thread.

Can Ozzie Albies keep up his perfect streak against Jon Lester? Can Julio Teheran continue to pitch like a wizard against the Cubs? Will Josh Donaldson torment the team that drafted (and traded) him? You’ll have to tune in to find out.

Or, you could just hang out with us here in the comments. Bestow upon us all your wisdom of how you’d manage the game better than Snit or Maddon, or how you wouldn’t have swung at that 1-2 slider in the dirt, or about how you would never allow a ball to get caught in the Wrigley Field ivy.

If you’re reading this statement, it means you read to the end of the post, so thank you! It might also mean you enjoy reading in general, and you should read these two prep pieces about today’s game.

The Braves swapped out a member of their relief corps in exchange for one of their top prospects.

The Braves announced the addition of Kyle Wright to the major league roster today, as the right-hander was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett:

Wright made three starts earlier this season, with an 0-2 record and a 7.07 ERA in 14 innings pitched. As those numbers would suggest, Wright was hit hard during his stint with Atlanta this season, and has been largely ineffective since returning to Gwinnett, owning a 6.08 ERA with the Triple-A affiliate. Despite those struggles, Wright ranks among the top prospects in the Braves farm system and could benefit from a move to the bullpen if that is indeed the intended role for the 23-year-old upon his return.

The Braves optioned left-hander Grant Dayton to Gwinnett to clear a roster spot for Wright. This leaves Atlanta with Jerry Blevins and AJ Minter as the lone left-handed options out of the bullpen for tonight’s game.

The Braves will keep the offensive juggernaut intact to battle the Cubs

During the off-season, when the Braves spoke about their ability to get creative with their lineup, using depth to mix-and-match, the Cubs were a common reference point. Being able to rotate off days throughout the roster would help the Braves preserve some of their most essential lineup pieces and keep them fresh down the stretch, like the Cubs have done in recent years.

Well, it was a nice narrative. But as tonight’s lineup demonstrates - and as most of the recent lineups have demonstrated - Brian Snitker isn’t exactly harnessing his inner Joe Maddon on a regular basis.

In facing Jon Lester, the Braves will stick with their regulars. This is not necessarily a criticism of the offense as a whole, as the unit is capable of doing damage from top to bottom, but the occasional rest day could possibly benefit some of the lineup’s elder statesmen. Not that I’m talking about anyone in particular. Nope, definitely not talking about a Greek right fielder. No, no, no. Not talking about him.

The Braves have fared well against Lester at the plate, but none better than Ozzie Albies, who is 5-for-5 against him in his career.

Meanwhile, notorious tinkerer Joe Maddon will send his Cubs out in this order:

Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Carlos Gonzalez, and Jason Heyward have combined to go 7-for-66 against Teheran, with 20 of those putouts being strikeouts. There is, of course, no guarantee this will continue tonight. When 62.5% of a team’s position players have scuffled in this manner, it means one of two things: you can feel really good about your chances; or, they’re all due to turn things around at the exact same time.

This will be the second Julio Teheran vs. Jon Lester showdown of the 2019 season. As noted in today’s preview, these two teams faced off in April and the Braves emerged victorious; neither starter factored into the decision.

The NL East and NL Central leaders will meet for four games this week

After some late inning magic on Sunday afternoon - this particular variety supplied by Johan Camargo’s pinch hit home run to take down the Nationals - the Braves’ streak of five consecutive series victories is alive and well. Starting today, the Braves will set out to extend that streak to six.

With widespread division losses over the past week, the Braves suddenly find themselves high atop the NL East mountain with a 6 ½ game lead that seemed all but impossible two weeks ago. They will face a Chicago Cubs team who leads a clustered NL Central, albeit by a much smaller margin than the Braves. Their lead over the Brewers is merely ½ game, while they sit 5 ½ games ahead of the last-place Pirates. Suffice to say, the Cubs’ division rivals have been holding it together a bit better than the Braves’ competition has been.

Julio Teheran will attempt to right the ship after last week’s stinker against the Mets. After eight consecutive starts in which he did not allow more than one earned run, Julio unraveled against Pete Alonso & Co., surrendering six earned runs over four innings. Today, he will have an uphill battle against a tough Cubs lineup.

The Braves will face Jon Lester, who has been mired in a rough patch over the past month. During his last seven starts, Lester is 3-4 with a 7.17 ERA | 6.17 FIP, allowing an uncharacteristic 2.63 HR/9. In a place like Wrigley Field, against a lineup that has been swinging it like the Braves have, things could get interesting quickly.

This will be the second time these two pitchers have faced each other this season, the first of which came April 3. Thanks to some late inning heroics (a recurring theme for the Braves again this year, it appears), and a Cubs bullpen that was very generous with walks, the Braves won that game, 6-4. Of note: Jonny Venters, Wes Parsons, Jesse Biddle, and Arodys Vizcaino all pitched for the Braves in that game; of those four, only Parsons remains in the organization, and he is not currently with the big league squad.

Chicago is in a different place than they were when the Braves swept them in April; they have gone 41-30 since and have cleaned up a few of their own messes. Their bullpen is still an adventure, but it has been better than when the Braves saw them (and this is without Craig Kimbrel making his Chicago debut yet).

The Cubs have played well at Wrigley Field, going 27-14 thus far. The Braves play well on the road, however - posting a 22-15 mark - so this could offset any home field advantage for the Cubbies.

There is a distinct Playoff Series feel to this four-game set, and it will be a great checkpoint for both teams as we coast into the exact midpoint of the season.

Atlanta will wrap up the season series against the Cubs with a four-game series at Wrigley starting on Monday

Fresh off of a series win in Washington, the Atlanta Braves will head to the Windy City where they will take open a four-game series on Monday against the Chicago Cubs. The Braves are surging of late going 16-5 in June and have pushed their lead in the NL East to 6.5 games over the slumping Phillies.

The Cubs will enter play on Monday with a 42-35 record and a half game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. Chicago is just 4-6 over its last 10 games but avoided a home sweep on Sunday with a 5-3 win over the New York Mets.

Atlanta swept the Cubs back in early April at SunTrust Park outscoring them 23-8 tin the series.

Max Fried will take his turn on Tuesday and will be looking to put together another solid outing against the Cubs. Fried’s first start of the season came against Chicago back on April 4 in which he allowed just one hit over six shutout innings. That would begin a stretch where he allowed a total of four earned runs over his first four starts of the season. Fried snapped a rough stretch in his last outing allowing eight hits, two runs while striking out six over six innings against the Mets.
