Max Fried pitched effectively enough for the Braves offense to finally break through to earn the series win.

The Braves beat the Mets 7-2 as the offense came alive late in a game where the Braves’ defense shined.

While the Mets got on the board first in the top of the first, Freddie Freeman made sure that did not last long, as he connected for his 21st home run of the season to make the score 2-1. The game would remain quiet until the top of the fourth, when Wilson Ramos and Amed Rosario both doubled to tie the score 2-2.

The Mets would again threaten in the top of the sixth. Singles from Todd Frazier and J.D. Davis put runners on first and second for Wilson Ramos. Ramos connected for a third straight single, but Charlie Culberson delivered a strike to home plate. Tyler Flowers made the catch and then tagged Davis as he attempted to leap over Flowers. It arguably was the defensive play of the year by a catcher in the majors to date.

Josh Donaldson wasted little time putting the Braves in front in the bottom of sixth, as he connected for his fifth home run in six games. For a player many have waited to wake up all season, Donaldson has arrived on the scene at a level only the NWO Wolfpack could do in the late 90’s. Ozzie Albies would add an RBI double later in the sixth to make the score 5-2.

The rest of the game, the Braves bullpen supported Fried with three dominant innings. They only allowed one walk and one hit. Nick Markakis added a 2-run double of his own in the bottom of the eighth. Luke Jackson secured the 7-2 win with a scoreless ninth.

Fried effectively managed his way through six innings tonight. While he was not dominant, it was an improvement from his recent stretch of starts. While he gave up eight hits, he only walked one batter and struck out six on the night. The assists from Culberson and Ronald Acuna Jr. helped limit the damage.

It was another impressive win by the Braves, who continue finding success against the NL East. They will have plenty to rest up for tomorrow, as they visit Washington Friday with revenge in mind from a late April sweep at the hands of the Nationals. Also, there will be a new face likely making his Braves debut in the form of Dallas Keuchel.

Atlanta will be stacking their lineup with right-handed bats against Steven Matz (yes, I can bring bars). Charlie Culberson and Tyler Flowers get logical starts for the Braves as it will allow Brian McCann and Nick Markakis two days off before a critical road trip.
The Mets also are going with a platoon preference against Max Fried. J.D. Davis and Juan Lagares will get starts in the outfield. However, the key to success tonight remains simple. The productivity in this lineup centers on Peter Alonso and Michael Conforto. If Fried can hold that combination to two hits or less that remain inside the ballpark, the Braves will be in very good shape to end the homestand with a win.

Braves hope Max Fried can get back on track as they seek third straight series win.

It happens.

Arguably the best team in baseball in the month of June, the Braves looked human last night. One of, if not the, best pitchers in baseball was on his game, Julio Teheran struggled, and the expected outcome occurred. However, this is where it gets exciting. The Atlanta Braves’ responses to losses since the beginning of May is what makes this team so special.

The Braves have suffered consecutive losses only three times since the start of May. And the amazing thing is that Atlanta has not played as a team clicking on all cylinders at the same time yet. In May, the source of success was the starting pitching, as Atlanta was sixth in ERA, 13th in FIP, and 10th in xFIP while the offense was 24th in wOBA and 26th in wRC+. In June, the source of success has been the offense, as the Braves are first in wOBA and wRC+ while the starting pitching is 22nd in ERA, 17th in FIP, and 20th in xFIP.

Even though the offense will likely experience some regression, it still should remain one of the best in baseball. However, the starters have had their ups and downs over the past 10 days. Both Mike Soroka and Julio Teheran have been brilliant since May 1st, but have experienced subpar starts recently. Mike Foltynewicz may be finding his groove, and the debut of Dallas Keuchel is Friday night. While both positives and negatives are occuring, a big boost for Atlanta will be Max Fried rediscovering the magic he had to begin the year.

Fried’s (4.11 ERA, 4.15 FIP, 3.64 xFIP) recent stretch of starts have been a mixed bag of allowing more contact and bad luck. Fried’s K% has decreased from 23.3 % in May to 19.7% in June. His BB% has increased from 5.5% before May 1st to 7.0% since. Basically, Fried is allowing more contact and base runners as the league is adjusting to him. However, Fried’s pitching triple slash since May 1st (5.36 ERA, 4.58 FIP, 3.61 xFIP) suggests he has pitched better than his numbers suggest. This is supported by the fact that Fried has allowed the sixth highest BABIP and third highest HR/FB% percentage for all pitchers with 40 or more innings pitched since May 1st. Just like Fried was likely to experience negative regression after his hot start, these numbers suggest he could see positive regression at any moment.

Fried’s opposing southpaw tonight will be Steven Matz (3.93 ERA, 4.63 FIP, 4.11 xFIP). His current triple-slash is nearly identical to where his 2018 numbers finished. Many of his peripherals are right in line with his career numbers, except that hitters are making harder contact against him. Fried is currently giving up the highest season measures in BABIP. Hard-Hit%, and HR/9 of his career.

While this may seem like a good matchup on paper for a Braves team that is one of the best in the league against left-handers, it should also be noted that Matz has had success against Atlanta. In 8 career starts, Matz has registered a 2.78 ERA and a .639 OPS allowed against the Braves, good for a perfect 5-0 record. Few pitchers have had more success against Atlanta than Matz since he has come into the majors.

The key tonight may come down to which defense plays better. If the Braves can support Fried, they will put themselves in a good position to win. This is especially true if they can keep their awesome rate of home runs going as they have in June.

WPA- Ronald Acuna Jr.- In the one game he face Matz last year, Acuna went 2-3. It feels like another opportunity for Acuna to gain the momentum for Atlanta early. The fact he is as hot as Hades at the plate right now also helps.

The Braves are being cautious with one of their prized young pitchers after a scary scene this weekend.

The Braves announced today that pitcher Sean Newcomb was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list, retroactive to Monday. The left-hander was struck in the head on Saturday by a 102 MPH line drive off the bat of Phillies catcher JT Realmuto, then was immediately removed from the game.

The Braves will obviously monitor Newcomb closely in the aftermath of such a traumatic injury, and this IL stint is a testament to their concern. There were reports over the past few days that Newcomb had felt no effect aside from neck soreness, but as with all head injuries, the timetable for concussion symptoms is often unpredictable. We will continue to provide updates as Newcomb nears his return.
