Ronald Acuna and Freddie Freeman both homered to help the Braves to a 6-5 win over the Dodgers.

The NLDS will continue on Monday after the Atlanta Braves delivered a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 to avoid elimination.

Held scoreless for the first 19 innings of the series, the Braves finally broke through in the second against Walker Buehler. Nick Markakis worked a leadoff walk to get things started. That walk was the first by Atlanta hitter in the series. Buehler answered right back and struck out Johan Camargo and Kurt Suzuki.

Ozzie Albies followed with a soft single to center. Cody Bellinger misplayed the ball in the outfield and both runners were able to move up 90 feet to second and third. After an intentional walk to Charlie Culberson that loaded the bases, Buehler lost the strike zone against Sean Newcomb and walked him on four pitches to give Atlanta their first run and lead of the series.

That would bring Ronald Acuna Jr. to the plate who would work a 3-1 count and then absolutely destroy a fastball into the left field stands for a grand slam to increase the lead to 5-0.

The Dodgers would start to chip away from there. Newcomb issued a leadoff walk to Kike Hernandez before retiring Yasmani Grandal with a fly out. Hernandez moved up to second on a sacrifice by Buehler before Newcomb walked Chris Taylor. That would be the end of the line for Newcomb who was replaced by Kevin Gausman. Gausman then gave up a single to left by Justin Turner that scored Hernandez. Acuna misplayed the ball in left and Taylor was able to come all the way around and score from first to make it 5-2.

Los Angeles would strike again in the fifth and again a leadoff walk would prove costly. Grandal worked a free pass from Gausman. After a Buehler strikeout, Taylor launched a two-run home run to left to make it 5-4. Brian Snitker would replace Gausman with Max Fried who hung a curveball to Max Muncy for a solo bomb that tied the game. Fried was able to get Manny Machado to fly out to end the inning but we had a new ball game.

The Dodgers missed an opportunity in the sixth. Touki Toussaint gave up a ground rule double to Matt Kemp to lead off the inning. Kemp moved up to third on a ground out and then was thrown out at the plate by Charlie Culberson on a ground ball off the bat of Hernandez.

The score would remain tied until the sixth when Freddie Freeman jumped on the first pitch he saw from former Brave Alex Wood and drove it out to right to put the Braves back in front.

A.J. Minter allowed two base runners in the eighth but got Yasiel Puig to ground out with no damage. Arodys Vizcaino allowed a leadoff single to Joc Pederson and a walk to Justin Turner in the ninth but came back to strike out Max Muncy, Manny Machado and Brian Dozier to end the game.

The Braves push the series to a Game 4 on Monday. This isn’t over yet.

Wood was then replaced by Ryan Madson who struck out Johan Camargo before allowing an opposite field single to Kurt Suzuki. However, Madson got Albies to fly out to center to end the inning.

Bottom of 5th: Braves 5, Dodgers 5

Another 1-2-3 inning for Walker Buehler who has quietly set down 11-straight since allowing Acuna’s grand slam in the second. Ryan Flaherty pinch-hit for Fried and grounded to second before Acuna and Inciarte both struck out. Touki Toussaint is coming on to pitch for Atlanta in the sixth.

Top of 5th: Braves 5, Dodgers 5

The Dodgers battled all the way back in the fifth and once again a leadoff walk came back to haunt Atlanta. Yasmani Grandal worked a free pass from Gausman to lead off the inning. Gausman then struck out Buehler who was unable to advance the runner. However, Chris Taylor followed with a two-run home run to left to cut the Braves’ lead to 5-4. Gausman then got Justin Turner to ground out.

That would be the end of the night for Gausman as Brian Snitker emerged from the dugout and called for Max Fried to face the left handed hitting Max Muncy. Fried quickly got ahead with a steady diet of curveballs but Muncy finally connected on a high one and drove it out to right center for a solo homer to tie the game.

That would bring Machado to the plate who would drive another breaking ball to the wall in left that Acuna was able to snag with a leaping catch. It is a new ball game though as we head to the bottom of the 5th.

Bottom of 4th: Braves 5, Dodgers 2

Another quick inning for Buehler in the fourth but the Braves took some good swings against him. Kurt Suzuki lined out to Bellinger in center for the first out then Albies drove one into the right center gap that hung up just long enough for Bellinger to get to it for the second out. Culberson then struck out to end the inning.

Top of 4th: Braves 5, Dodgers 2

Gausman came back out for the fourth and gave the Braves exactly what they needed working a 1-2-3 inning. Kemp led off with a ground out to Charlie Culberson. Gausman then used his splitfinger pitch to perfection striking out Cody Bellinger and Kike Hernandez to end the inning.

Bottom of 3rd: Braves 5, Dodgers 2

Buehler settled down in the third retiring the Braves in order. Freeman bounced back to the mound to start the inning. Markakis flied to left and Camargo struck out to end the frame.

Top of 3rd: Braves 5, Dodgers 2

The Dodgers threatened again in the third. Kike Hernandez worked another leadoff walk against Newcomb. Yasmani Grandal then flied to center for the first out. Buehler then sacrificed Hernandez to second before Taylor walked. That would be the end of the night for Newcomb as Brian Snitker came out and replaced him with Kevin Gausman.

Gausman then ran the count to 3-1 before Turner singled through the left side scoring Hernandez. Acuna misplayed the ball in left allowing Taylor to come all the way around to score to make it 5-2. Gausman then walked pinch-hitter Max Muncy to put runners at first and second. However, he came right back to strike out Manny Machado with a 3-2 breaking ball to escape with no additional damage.

The shoe is finally on the other foot as the Braves exploded for five runs in the second inning. Nick Markakis worked a leadoff walk. Buehler then struck out Camargo and Suzuki. Ozzie Albies followed with a single to center. The Dodgers intentionally walked Charlie Culberson to load the bases with two outs. However, Buehler lost the strike zone against Sean Newcomb and walked him to bring in Atlanta’s first run of the postseason. The Braves weren’t finished however. Acuna worked the count to 3-0 and then took a bad strike call. He then jumped on a fastball and drove it out to left for a grand slam to put Atlanta up 5-0. Inciarte grounded out to end the inning but the Braves have a big lead for the first time in the series.

The Braves will look to stave off elimination in Game 3 at SunTrust Park.

The season hangs in the balance for the Atlanta Braves who must win or go home Sunday in Game 3 of the NLDS. Atlanta has still not scored a run dropping the first two games of the series 6-0 on Thursday and 3-0 on Friday.

The Braves made a late change on Saturday and Sean Newcomb is now scheduled to get the start on Sunday. Originally, Atlanta had planned for Kevin Gausman to start but he will now be available out of the bullpen as well everyone not named Mike Foltynewicz.

Newcomb made his postseason debut in Game 1 throwing two scoreless innings in relief while allowing one hit and striking out two. Newcomb made two starts in the regular season against the Dodgers getting roughed up the first time before coming within one strike of a no-hitter in the second. His second half numbers haven’t been good but he has the stuff to go out and dominate. The Braves will be looking for him to get them off to a good start after they have fallen behind early in both of the first two games of the series.

Rookie right-hander Walker Buehler will get the start for the Dodgers. Buehler threw 6.2 scoreless innings in the NL West tiebreaker. He faced Atlanta back in June and allowed one run over 5.1 innings.

If the Braves are going to turn things around then they are going to have to find a way to generate some offense. Atlanta has managed just nine hits over the first two games of the series.

First pitch is scheduled for around 8:07 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on FS1.

I kind of wish the Braves were facing anyone else in this game

You’ll note the title of this post has changed relative to its predecessors. The previous presumption didn’t work, so perhaps an expectation adjustment is in order.

The thing is, Walker Buehler is good. It’s not that Hyun-Jin Ryu and Clayton Kershaw aren’t good, but that Buehler has a 68 ERA-, 76 FIP-, and 79 xFIP-, and no-hit the Rockies into the sixth inning in a Game 163 on Monday. It’s also that preparing for Walker Buehler might be difficult, as the below shows:

That’s the sort of profile that looks like the pitch mix and sequencing of a junkballer, but Buehler is absolutely no junkballer. His four-seamer and sinker generate tons of whiffs (yes, he gets whiffs on his sinker), all of his pitches get more grounders than usual and his curve of a “hit me into the dirt” machine, and his only pitch that’s even remotely prone is the same four-seam fastball that’s whiffed on over 30 percent of the time it’s swung at. On the year, the only pitch that’s had net-negative results for him has been his changeup, which is the pitch he throws the least (.346 xwOBA-against in 26 results).

With a six-pitch mix, preparation is very difficult, and as the chart above shows, Buehler doesn’t have many general tendencies either. First time through the order, he tends to throw more fastballs as the first pitch, but since we already saw both Ryu and Kershaw adjust away from doing that, the Braves can’t count on this as a given. Second time through the order, there’s more variation in approach but it’s not easy to summarize (see here) — righties should expect more sinkers when ahead in the count and should try to avoid hitting them weakly for easy outs; lefties should expect more cutters at that point, and more fastballs with two strikes. It’s not clear whether Buehler will go a third time through the order, or whether the Dodgers will sense the blood in the water and go for the jugular with their bullpen, but expect his approach to evolve again if he does so, including heavy use of fastballs to put righties away at that point.

Buehler already faced the Braves once, in June, and his approach was... very specific!

Of course, he probably won’t do the same thing twice. Nor will he necessarily pitch the way he did in Game 163, which is also very different from his overall tendency.

When Buehler started against the Braves, they only managed a run by stringing together a single and a double. In Buehler’s worst start of the year, which came against Philadelphia, he was done in by one big inning, which included a solo homer, an RBI double by Andrew Knapp, and a 3-RBI triple by Carlos Santana (somehow). I don’t know if the Braves, or the universe, has that kind of magic in store for today. I don’t know how they’re preparing for Buehler, whether it’s truly possible to prepare for a guy with his degree of eclecticism, or what their gameplan is. I don’t know if they can beat the Dodgers, but hopefully they do.

If there’s one thing the Braves have done this year, it’s win when their backs have been against some kind of metaphorical wall. They did it a lot with all those walkoffs in April and May, and while the walkoffs themselves disappeared, they still found another gear in many close-and-late scenarios. More broadly, they’ve done it all season, taking minuscule playoff odds and expanding them rather than contracting them. They did it to clinch the division, coming from behind to stomp the Phillies again and again. Can they do something similar tonight? Can they do something similar in this series? Probably not seems the safe bet, but the Braves haven’t exactly been kind to safe bets this entire year.

Down 0-2 you can’t really fault Atlanta for pulling out all the stops. Newcomb came within one strike of throwing a no-hitter against Los Angeles during the regular season. He made a solid appearance in relief in Game 1. Gausman could also be used as a reliever as the Braves should be approaching the game from an “all hands on deck” standpoint.

No matter who they elect to pitch, they are going to have to find a way to score some runs if they want to extend the series. Atlanta’s offense has been non-existent through the first two games and will face another tough task against Walker Buehler in Game 3.
