Mike Foltynewicz got hit hard early and the bullpen gave up homers late as the Giants snapped Atlanta’s five-game winning streak.

Like many recent Atlanta Braves games, the offense started tonight’s series opening contest against the San Francisco Giants on a roll. Unfortunately, the pitching could not contain the Giants’ bats and the offense could not cash in a key hit when needed, and the Braves fell by a 9-4 score, snapping their five-game winning streak.

The first inning was fun, even if the others weren’t. Mike Foltynewicz had a bit of an adventure, allowing a one-out walk and single, but got a pop-up from Brandon Belt and a hard grounder off the bat of Evan Longoria to second to end the threat. Then, the bats took over against Chris Stratton. Ozzie Albies started the game with a liner to center and moved to second when center fielder Austin Jackson booted the ball. Albies moved to third on a hot smash into deep right center by Ronald Acuña Jr. that Jackson somehow managed to flag down, and then was able to trot home when Freddie Freeman demolished a high Stratton fastball into the left field seats for a monster two-run homer. After a Nick Markakis groundout, new arrival Jose Bautista got his first hit in a Braves uniform, hitting a double over Jackson’s head. Tyler Flowers struck out swinging, but the Braves gave Folty a two-run cushion to work with...

...which he promptly punctured. Foltynewicz really struggled with his slider command in this one, having it miss out of the zone again and again while hitters were able to fend off his fastball. The second inning started with a single and a walk, and then Foltynewicz missed badly with a 2-1 slider that didn’t run too wide of the zone but stayed perfectly hittable for Gregor Blanco, who smashed in into the right field corner for a two-run triple. Stratton, the Giants’ pitcher, struck out, but then Alen Hanson hit another high slider down the third-base line for a run-scoring double. The Giants weren’t done yet, feasting on Foltynewicz pitches that were rapidly changing from a gameplan to a set of get-me-over desperation attempts. Andrew McCutchen knocked a grooved fastball to right, putting runners at the corners. Then, Foltynewicz got a bit of a gift as Buster Posey hit a chopper to third. Jose Bautista fielded the ball and threw home to cut down Hanson, but Flowers’ tag was late and the initial out call at the plate was overturned on replay challenge, giving the Giants a 4-2 advantage. That precipitated a Belt double on an inside fastball (5-2) and a Longoria groundout that scored the inning’s sixth run.

After that, Stratton took over and snake-charmed the Atlanta bats into some doldrums. Nick Markakis broke up some of the monotony with a third-inning solo blast to left center that made it 6-3, but other than that, the Braves just could not manage anything. They got two walks in the fourth but Ozzie Albies grounded out; Tyler Flowers reached on a one-out single in the sixth but Johan Camargo promptly hit into a double play. Overall, Stratton finished with six innings, six hits, two walks, three runs, and six strikeouts in his final line.

Mike Foltynewicz actually recovered his composure somewhat after the second, even though the bullpen was warming up before he was able to complete that nightmare inning. He only allowed three additional singles over the next three frames, with no walks and three strikeouts. His final line was still poor, with five innings of nine-hit, two-walk, six-run ball with only four strikeouts, but it was a lot better than it could have been given that he almost got knocked out of the game after retiring just four batters. It was the most runs he had allowed in a start since August 21 of last year.

The Braves went to the bullpen in the sixth, using Peter Moylan for a scoreless frame that involved a leadoff single, a pickoff, a one-out walk, and a double play. Jesse Biddle replaced Moylan in the seventh and lengthened the deficit as Brandon Crawford lined an absolutely hang-em-and-bang-em slider over the short porch in right field for a two-run homer that made it 8-3 in San Francisco’s favor. The Braves got a run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a pinch-hit single by Charlie Culberson, a fielding error that let him take second, and then two consecutive fly outs that allowed him to trot home. Still, it wasn’t enough. Max Fried worked the final two innings, allowing a looping line drive opposite field homer to Evan Longoria in the ninth to cap the scoring.

The Braves wasted a lot of opportunities in this game, as they scored just four runs despite getting seven hits, three walks, and three errors by the Giants’ defenders, as a couple of double plays (including one in the ninth) cut down some potential rallies. Will Smith, Tony Watson, and Sam Dyson closed out the game for the Giants, allowing just one hit, one run (unearned), and one walk. While every Braves hitter but Ronald Acuña Jr. reached base at least once, the hits and walks were too spread out. It happens.

Jose Bautista went 1-for-4 with a double and two strikeouts in his debut. He made one pretty good play at the hot corner and started an effective double play, but was part of the failed conversion of the fielder’s choice into an out at home, and arguably failed to make another play on a slow roller that seemed reasonably doable. It remains to be seen what the plan is at third base going forward, but Johan Camargo seems likely to draw the majority of starts at shortstop during Dansby Swanson’s absence.

The Braves will attempt to start a new winning streak and even the series tomorrow night, when Ty Blach faces Brandon McCarthy.

Just hours after being optioned to Gwinnett to make room for Jose Bautista’s arrival, Preston Tucker was recalled to Atlanta. He will be on the bench for tonight’s series opener against the Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.

Johan Camargo is starting at shortstop tonight for the Braves and batting seventh.

Wrist injuries can be nasty and can take a long time to heal if not allowed proper time to rest. Mark Bowman reported earlier today that Swanson’s wrist is structurally sound but the Braves are obviously playing it safe. With the addition of Bautista the Braves can easily shift Camargo over to handle shortstop without a drastic decline in defense.

Swanson, who opened the season red-hot, was just 8-for-his-last-43 before being pulled from Wednesday’s game in New York. He did not play on Thursday.

These Giants have faced Mike Foltynewicz a veritable ton, which makes sense given that their team features a bunch of veterans and Foltynewicz now has a fair bit of innings under his belt. They have a combined nine homers off of him (Belt with three, Crawford with three, Posey with two, and Hundley with one). The Giants actually have fewer players that haven’t ever faced Foltynewicz (four) than have, and of everyone that’s faced him, only Gregor Blanco and Gorkys Hernandez have failed to secure some success against the tall righty.

The Braves have made some roster moves ahead of tonight’s series opener. Jose Bautista is in the lineup batting fifth in his Braves debut. Johan Camargo continues to spell the banged-up Dansby Swanson at shortstop. Other than that, this lineup isn’t too different from the ones in the recent past, with the Albies-Acuña-Freeman-Markakis top four, the pitcher batting eighth, and Inciarte serving as a secondary leadoff man from the nine-hole.

While it has been largely assumed, Mike Soroka will get at least one more start with the team on Sunday

After Mike Soroka dominated the formerly first place New York Mets in his Major League debut with a six inning, one run, no walks performance earlier this week, fans throughout Braves country have clamored to see more of the young righty.

However, the Braves have been pretty coy about their plans for their game against the Giants on Sunday despite the fact that Anibal Sanchez has not made a rehab start and the Braves have continued to carry Soroka on the roster even when they were short-handed in the bullpen with Shane Carle dealing with numbness in his fingers. While many had assumed that Soroka would get at least one more start on Sunday, the team would not make it official.

Until now.

It is not surprising to anyone who has read Talking Chop for any prolonged period that this pleases this particular author, but external from that it seems to underscore both how much the team values what Soroka can bring to the rotation as well as his readiness for the big stage. He did nothing in his outstanding major league debut to diminish that excitement.

As of now, it is unclear if this will be another cameo appearance while Anibal continues to recover. One option that is on the table is for Soroka to permanently join the rotation and for Sanchez to slide into more of a long relief role which some had thought would be ideal for him when he joined the team prior to this season. Another option is for Sanchez to rejoin the rotation at some point and Soroka to head back to Triple-A after Sunday (and perhaps another start or two) and to wait his turn again.

The Braves made the addition of Jose Bautista official and optioned Preston Tucker to Gwinnett to make room for him on the roster

Earlier today, we all got word that the Jose Bautista would be joining the Braves to start their three game series at home against the Giants. After giving him a few games in the minors at third base to get him back up to speed in terms of being against live competition and trying to compensate for the lack of a spring training for Joey Bats, the Braves must have liked what they saw enough to pull the trigger.

The bigger question during the course of the day was who was going to get bumped off the roster. Based purely on performance, Charlie Culberson appeared to be the easy answer, but the combination of option years and the fact that Dansby Swanson is currently tending to a sore wrist, the Braves opted for a different route.

Our own Ivan was quick to point out in internal conversations that Tucker currently ranks 2nd on the team in games leading the team in WPA (the robotically-enhanced...probably...version of Nick Markakis ranks first with six ahead of Tucker’s five) despite losing his starting job to the arrival of star in the making Ronald Acuna Jr.. It does not seem likely that Tucker will waste away in the minors forever as he has been a valuable bench bat for the Braves after a red hot start to the season as the starting left fielder. Tucker was more a victim of circumstance than anything else.

With that, the Braves make the addition of Jose Bautista as a third baseman official. He will wear #23 and bat 5th in tonight’s series opener against the Giants. It will be very interesting to see if the move pans out.

Mike Foltynewicz will duel Chris Stratton as the Braves return home after a great road trip

First, let’s get this out of the way: I hate the Giants. Sweep them into the ocean (preferably a deep-sea trench), please. Okay, now back to your regularly scheduled preview.

The Braves find themselves in a pretty nice position in early May. They’re carrying a five-game winning streak and have just swept their way into first place by knocking off the formerly-division-leading Mets in New York. They have the league’s best offense, and over the last week, a top-10 pitching staff as well. They have the league’s fourth-best record, the league’s best run differential, and their Baseball-Reference Simple Rating System (SRS) score is nearly a run per game better than the number two team. (For reference, the overall spread in SRS right now is six runs, so the Braves basically have an entire sixth of the span to themselves.)

Meanwhile, the Giants are none of those things. After a deliciously schadenfreude-inducing 2017 in which they managed only 64 wins and still failed to get the first overall pick in the draft and an aggressive reloading strategy this offseason, the Giants have only managed a 16-15 record so far. They haven’t really been bad (15th in offense, 19th in position player WAR, 14th in rotation WAR, 23rd in relief WAR), but there also hasn’t been anything to write home about, either. They started the season 7-11, failing to win a series until April 22, but have gone 9-4 since that streak ended. It’s not quite Braves-level hotness, but it is something.

Offensively, the Giants have been led by Brandon Belt, who is having a monster year so far. His 175 wRC+ is good for sixth in the majors, and leads that of Freddie Freeman. They are also getting good production from a catching duo of Buster Posey (he who was out) and Nick Hundley. Their real problem spots offensively have been left and center field, where a combination of Gregor Blanco, Gorkys Hernandez, Austin Jackson, and Hunter Pence have seriously floundered. In particular, the Giants have gotten the worst production out of any team from left field so far.

Chris Stratton will be San Francisco’s starter for the series opener. Stratton made 13 appearances (10 starts) and pitched averagely for the Giants last year, with a 98 FIP- and 102 xFIP-. This year, his starts are all off kilter so far: his 3.90 / 3.31 / 4.52 pitching triple-slash (that’s 104 / 87 / 112 on a minus basis) is the result of both a very low strand rate (hence ERA above FIP) but also a crazy run of homer suppression (just a three percent HR/FB mark, hence FIP way below xFIP). Stratton pieced together a really good stretch in mid-April where he allowed just three runs in nearly 21 innings, but was roughed up by the Dodgers in his last start, grabbing only four outs while walking four and allowing six total runs. He hasn’t faced the Braves since throwing a couple of scoreless relief innings against them in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Braves will counter with Mike Foltynewicz, who’s been somewhat like the inverse of Stratton so far in terms of ERA estimators. Folty’s triple slash is 2.53 / 3.88 / 3.73 (or 65 / 98 / 93 on a minus basis). Whereas Stratton has suffered from a low strand rate, Folty has benefited from a very high one (hence ERA below FIP), while giving up a few more homers than expected based on league-average fly ball rates (hence FIP above xFIP). The big righty has alternated mediocre starts with good starts so far, but has yet to give up more than three runs (or two earned runs) in any single outing. While he’s technically due for another mediocre start given the pattern, he may have a better chance of breaking it against a not-too-powerful San Francisco lineup. Last time out, Foltynewicz held the Phillies to one run in six frames while punching out six. His past performance against the Giants has been a bit of his career in microcosm, as he’s had three quite good and two horrible outings against them over the past three years.

Since the start of the season, the Braves have seen their playoff odds climb nearly 20 percent, while the Giants have seen their slide by about 10 percent due to the Diamondbacks’ striking early-season success. Let’s hope this series sees more of the same trend.
