A big-time spot start and quality offense combine for a lopsided win.

Thursday was not short on news for the Atlanta Braves, with Freddie Freeman in the lineup just one day after a severe injury scare and Matt Wisler taking the mound in place of the injured Anibal Sanchez. At the end of the evening, though, the team picked up a second consecutive win and began a weekend series against the New York Mets on a high note with a 12-4 victory.

The evening began in encouraging fashion, as it was the Braves that struck first on the scoreboard. Ender Inciarte and Ozzie Albies generated back-to-back singles to open the first inning and, after Inciarte advanced to third base, Freddie Freeman provided a sacrifice fly to give Atlanta the lead. From there, Nick Markakis lined out but, on cue, Kurt Suzuki continued his torrid pace from the last year-plus with a two-run home run to give the Braves a three-run cushion.

After a quiet second inning on both sides, the Braves created more fireworks in the bottom of the third. Albies led things off with a double and he was brought to the plate on an RBI single from Markakis. From there, Suzuki doubled to place two runners in scoring position and Preston Tucker cleared the bases with a two-run double to give Wisler a six-run lead.

Given the way that the 25-year-old was pitching, that was more than enough wiggle room. Aside from a mistake on a solo home run by New York’s Todd Frazier to lead off the fifth inning, Wisler was nearly flawless. The right-hander sported a devastating slider throughout the evening, operating with confidence and command, and the end result was a scoreless, seven-inning showing with eight strikeouts and only two hits (and no walks) allowed.

As Wisler was primed for a well-earned seat on the bench, the Braves kept scoring in the seventh. With singles from Freeman and Markakis and a walk from Suzuki, Atlanta loaded the bases with two outs for Tucker and, in game-sealing fashion, the left fielder stroked a double down the right-field line to bring the margin to 9-1.

The home team wasn’t done just yet, either, as Dansby Swanson contributed his first hit of the night, plating Tucker on a double to left-center field. That was the extent of the offensive damage for Atlanta in the seventh, though Lucas Sims (taking over for Wisler in mop-up duty) struggled mightily in the eighth, taking the blame for three earned runs and making things at least slightly interesting.

The end result was never in doubt, however, and the Braves plated two additional runs in the bottom of the eighth for good measure. Atlanta’s bullpen managed to preserve the massive cushion from there and that was the end of that.

While there was plenty of offense on this particular night, it was Wisler that emerged as the story of the evening. At the very least, Wisler earned a second opportunity in the rotation and, with the way his slider played in this particular spot, there is some reason for optimism that his uptick (although maybe not to this degree of dominance) could continue.

The Braves and Mets will get together once again on Friday evening, with Atlanta’s Sean Newcomb scheduled to face off with New York’s Noah Syndergaard. Stay tuned.

The Braves’ catching corps appears to be approaching being fully healthy as Tyler Flowers should begin his rehab assignment soon.

The Braves catching duo of Tyler Flowers and Kurt Suzuki was among the most productive in the major leagues last season much to the surprise of pretty much anyone. While many of us expected some regression (and with good reason), Flowers and Suzuki were still expected to be a net positive on the team especially when you factor in Flowers’ excellence at framing pitches for what is a relatively young rotation.

Unfortunately, the first weeks of the season did not go according to plan as Flowers injured his oblique in his first at-bat of the season and has been out ever since. Combine that with Kurt Suzuki’s injury scare on a HBP and the catching position has been a bit of an adventure through the beginning part of the season so far.

Fortunately, it looks like we will be returning to normalcy soon.

Let’s glance at the lineups for Thursday night’s game against New York.

The best news of the day for the Atlanta Braves came in a positive diagnosis for Freddie Freeman’s wrist and, on cue, the All-Star first baseman apparently talked himself into the lineup less than 24 hours after the now-infamous incident. In fact, here is the full lineup deployed by Brian Snitker.

Freeman’s inclusion is certainly the headliner and he is the centerpiece of a lineup that could potentially terrorize New York’s Matt Harvey. In a small sample this season, the former ace has allowed a .387 wOBA to left-handed hitters and, in 2017, that number was terrifyingly poor to the tune of a .426 clip allowed. Combine that with an offense that has already been clicking and optimism comes into view.

More than anything (sans Freeman’s return), the appearance of Matt Wisler will be quite interesting on Thursday. He has been good in Gwinnett this season but, if anything, this has a “last possible chance” feel to it and Wisler getting the call to start over Lucas Sims was controversial in some circles. New York’s offense isn’t overly scary on paper but, in the same breath, they’ve been explosive at times this season and this is a challenge for Wisler.

Adams made the team out of Spring Training in an unusual arrangement that saw the Braves carry five outfielders and three catchers north to Florida. However, the addition of Peter Bourjos, another speedy, right-handed-hitting outfielder made Adams somewhat redundant for fourth-outfielder duties. Bourjos has also seen the bulk of the playing time to date, receiving 24 PAs and 54 innings in the field thus far, in comparison to 21 PAs and just 15 fielding innings for Adams.

Adams had certainly hit well prior to this move in his very limited exposure, compiling a 129 wRC+ and adding a homer. (Bourjos, by comparison has an 11 wRC+ in a similarly-near-meaningless handful of PAs to date.)

The speedy outfielder was a surprise for the Braves last year, as he provided 122 PAs of 110 wRC+, 0.7 fWAR ball, albeit courtesy of a .368 BABIP and a crazy 20 percent HR/FB. Contact issued plagued him and that has continued this year: Adams had the 12th-worst contact rate among all players with 100+ PAs in 2017, and the eighth-worst contact rate among all players with twenty or more PAs so far this season.

I certainly would have liked to see Adams get a bit of an extended shot prior to the arrival of Ronald Acuña Jr., but the roster math did not work out in his favor given the Bourjos signing and the present need for a starter. We’ll see what happens, as the Braves have some options for what happens with Adams given his present DFA status, including waiving him, trading him, releasing him, or adding him back to the roster and booting another player in the process.

A lot of moving parts in this one.

Fresh off a series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, the Atlanta Braves will host the New York Mets on Thursday night for the first of four games at SunTrust Park. Though the Mets have cooled in recent days, New York enters with a solid division lead at this (very) early juncture and, considering all of the turmoil in terms of the roster for the Braves in recent hours, things could get quite interesting.

Though the situation with Freddie Freeman’s injury understandably drew top billing prior to word that he did not suffer a fractured wrist, the absence of Anibal Sanchez threw a wrench in things for Atlanta, as the veteran right-hander was slated to start in the series opener. That is no longer the case with Sanchez hitting the disabled list and, in his stead, Brian Snitker and company will send Matt Wisler to the mound for his first Major League appearance of the 2018 season.

Most optimism surrounding Wisler and a potential future as a starter in Atlanta has evaporated on the heels of a 5.26 ERA in 298 MLB innings, but the right-hander has performed well in two starts with Gwinnett this season. In his most recent outing, Wisler allowed only two runs in seven innings of work and, while most focus has been on a potential transition to the bullpen, the former prospect will have an opportunity to impress against a potentially potent Mets offense.

In opposition, the Mets will send Matt Harvey to the mound and the 29-year-old former ace has been solid, yet wholly unspectacular, in three starts this season. The right-hander has been limited to only 15 innings over three starts and Harvey owns a 4.80 ERA, albeit with (slightly) encouraging peripherals. Still, this is a Braves offense that is capable of dinging a pitcher with Harvey’s make-up and most Las Vegas shops see something of a coin-flip game despite the pitching uncertainty for Atlanta.

Settle in for a lengthy April series between two rival squads and stay tuned throughout what could be a busy day.

He’s okay!

During Wednesday night’s game against the Phillies, Freddie Freeman got hit in his left wrist and we all feared the worst. After all, his reaction to getting beaned in that tender spot was very similar to the reaction that he had when a fastball took six weeks of his season away from him last year.

Even though there were multiple reporters stating that there was reason for optimism, that didn’t stop us all from waiting on pins and needles for the official word as to whether or not Freddie Freeman was once again seriously injured.

The good news is that the optimism from late last night was well-founded, because the Braves have announced that Freddie Freeman is officially day-to-day after the test results came back negative.

He won’t even have to do a 10-day DL stint, which is definitely good news. Naturally, Freddie Freeman is already chomping at the bit to get back on the field and that shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody who has followed his career when it comes to injury situations.

While there may be a debate as to whether or not you want to see the guy back on the field after such a scare, the point is that Freddie Freeman’s wrist is still intact and didn’t receive another fracture. He’s okay — the franchise and the fans can finally breathe easy after an anxious night.
