After a thrilling win Saturday night, the Atlanta Braves will try to score their third win over the San Diego Padres this weekend Sunday when they wrap up a long road trip at Petco Park. The series begin on an ominous note as Atlanta dropped a 6-5 decision in the resumption of a suspended game from the end of July. Max Fried restored order in the night cap tossing a complete game shutout in a 4-0 win. Then the Braves overcame deficits of 3-0 and 7-3 to score a 10-8 win in 10 innings.
That win lowered Atlanta’s magic number to clinch the NL East to seven and eliminated the Padres from postseason contention. The Braves are 6-3 on their current road trip and have won six of their last seven games not counting the suspended game.
Brian Snitker confirmed after Saturday’s win that Atlanta will go with a bullpen game for Sunday. Jesse Chavez will likely start with Drew Smyly following at some point. The Braves used this strategy earlier in the trip in a win over Arizona. Chavez worked around two walks while recording the first four outs of the game. Smyly allowed four hits and one run while striking out four over 3 1/3 innings.
Joe Musgrove will make his 31st start of the season for the Padres and will be trying to overcome a rough start in his last outing. Musgrove allowed eight hits and five runs over 5 2/3 innings earlier this week against the Giants. He has allowed 24 hits and 13 runs in 23 innings in September (four starts).
Austin Riley had three more hits and drove in two runs in Saturday’s win giving him 100 RBI for the season. He is three behind Ozzie Albies for the team lead. Riley’s emergence is one of the big storylines for the Braves this season as they clearly wouldn’t be where they are without his production.
