The Atlanta Braves will be looking for a season-best fifth straight win Saturday night when they continue their series against the Washington Nationals. Atlanta climbed to 56-54 for the season with an 8-4 comeback win Friday night. With the win, the Braves closed to within a half game of the Mets and are one game back of the division leading Phillies.
Atlanta’s offense has been a big part of the team’s surge. They have now scored five runs or more in seven of their last eight games. A big reason for that breakout is the contributions of the group of players that were acquired by Alex Anthopoulos prior to the trade deadline. The Braves acquired Joc Pederson from the Cubs coming out of the All-Star break and he is hitting .310/.380/.507 with five doubles and three home runs in 20 games in an Atlanta uniform. The acquired Jorge Soler and Adam Duvall in a pair of deals at the deadline. Soler is 7-for-23 with two homers in six games while Duvall is 5-for-24, but has walked four times and driven in six runs in seven games.
Charlie Morton will get the start for Atlanta Saturday. Morton allowed three hits and two runs in six innings in his last outing against the Brewers. He faced the Nationals back on May 31 where he allowed six hits, three runs and struck out six in five innings of a Braves win.
Rookie right-hander Josiah Gray will make his second start for Washington in Saturday’s game. Gray was acquired from the Dodgers in the big trade that sent Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to Los Angeles. He was solid in his Nationals debut allowing four hits and one run over five innings against the Phillies
Saturday’s game is scheduled to get underway at 7:20 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
