Sunday saw Michael Harris II, Jesse Franklin V, Vaughn Grissom and Braden Shewmake all have very strong games at the plate while Jared Shuster had three more solid innings in Rome.
Here’s a look at how Sunday went down on the Atlanta Braves farm.
Durham Bulls 6, Gwinnett Stripers 3
- Travis Demeritte, RF: 1-for-3, R, RBI, HR, .296/.398/.629
- Eddie Rosario, CF: 0-for-4, RBI
- Terrance Gore, LF: 1-for-4, R, RBI, 3B, 282/.440/.410.
Nolan Kingham got the start and struggled, allowing six earned runs over five innings on nine hits and a pair of walks. If there was a bright spot here, it was that the pen pitched well. Victor Arano and Tanner Roark each threw a perfect inning of relief, while Dylan Lee threw two scoreless frames allowing just one hit in the process.
There wasn’t a ton of offense in this one as Gwinnett managed its three runs on three hits as Rays top prospect Shane Baz and the relief corps — that featured rehabbing big leaguer Nick Anderson — shut the Stripers down. The Travis Demeritte solo homer and the RBI triple by Terrance Gore accounted for the three runs, as Eddie Rosario would eventually knock Gore in. The third hit in this one came from a Ryan Casteel single.
Biloxi Shuckers 11, Mississippi Braves 3
- Braden Shewmake, SS: 2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR, .238/.280/.414
- CJ Alexander, 3B: 1-for-2, R, 3B, .170/.233/.348
- Freddy Tarnok, SP: 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 3.16 ERA
A red-hot Freddy Tarnok came back down to Earth a little on Sunday, allowing four earned runs over four innings on six hits and a pair of walks, though he did strike out five batters in the loss. Hayden Deal followed and allowed four runs of his own over 1.2 innings, followed by two runs in an inning-and-a-third from Will Latcham. Corbin Clouse allowed a run during his two-thirds of an inning, leaving only Brandon White to escape without being scored on during his inning-and-a-third.
Mississippi didn’t have much more luck on offense, putting together three runs on six hits on Sunday. Two of those six hits came from Braden Shewmake, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer with a pair of RBI. CJ Alexander tripled in his two at bats, while Trey Harris added a double. The other hits were singles from Hendrik Clementina and Riley Unroe.
Rome Braves 7, Hickory Crawdads 5 — 7 innings
- Michael Harris, DH: 2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, .297/.346/.443
- Jesse Franklin, CF: 2-for-3, 2 R, BB, .246/.316/.540
- Jared Shuster, SP: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 3.66 ERA
This is the game that got suspended on Saturday and finished off in wild fashion on Sunday. It was 2-0 Hickory through five, before Rome scored three in the sixth followed by a Hickory run in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh Rome plated four more runs while Hickory added two more.
Jared Shuster was technically the first guy to pitch as Mitch Stallings didn’t get to throw a pitch due to the weather, and Shuster allowed a run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts over three innings. The run he gave up was actually a solo homer, so outside of that he pitched well over three innings. Emmanuel Ramirez gave up a run over two innings, followed by three runs over an inning and a third from Marrick Crouse. Zach Daniels got the save by throwing two thirds of a scoreless inning.
The offense got a boost from Michael Harris and Jesse Franklin, each of whom went 2-3 with a walk and scored a pair of runs. Carlos Martinez joined the multi-hit category with a 2-4 game that included a double. We also saw a Riley Delgado triple and a Beau Philip double, as he picked up a pair of RBI.
Rome Braves Game 2 — PPD
Game 2 of the double header was rained out and postponed.
Augusta GreenJackets 5, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 3
- Vaughn Grissom, 2B: 2-for-4, BB, 2 2B, .312/.408/.446
- Rolddy Munoz, RP; 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 4.91 ERA
- Alec Barger, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 4.76 ERA
Chad Bryant got the start and gave up three runs (two earned) over four innings. Hard throwing Rolddy Munoz followed with three of the strongest innings we’ve seen from him since his eye-opening season debut. Munoz didn’t allow a hit or walk over the three innings and struck out three batters. Alec Barger was next and threw a scoreless frame, followed by a final scoreless frame by Lisandro Santos to finish this one off.
It was Vaughn Grissom’s day for Augusta, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a walk in the win. Those ended up as the only extra base hits of the game for the GreenJackets, and he was only one of two guys with multi-hit games, joined by Cade Bunnell (2-for-4).
