Oh look, another roster move as the Braves rotate a fresh arm into the bullpen.
Its no secret that the Braves’ bullpen has struggled of late and the team has had trouble finding arms that can contribute decent innings out of the bullpen. With guys like Will Smith and AJ Minter looking very human and Chris Martin being perennially dinged up, this has been a bit of a problem.
With Bryse Wilson being unable to pitch for the next few days at least, the Braves decided to give their latest waiver claim a shot.
The #Braves today recalled RHP Jay Flaa to Atlanta after optioning RHP Bryse Wilson to Triple-A Gwinnett following yesterday’s game.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 23, 2021
As mentioned earlier, the Braves claimed Jay Flaa off of waivers from the Orioles back on May 11th. Flaa has very, very limited experience as a big leaguer, although he has looked pretty good at Gwinnett in his three appearances. So far in the Braves organization, he has thrown 2.2 scoreless innings at Triple-A with two walks and four strikeouts. Again, not the biggest sample size, but it is clear the Braves need to get some arms in the bullpen they can count on instead of trotting out the same guys over and over again that they can’t.
As for Bryse, he pitched quite well for the Braves and is very likely to be back soon. While he won’t be eligible to return to the Braves until June 2, the multiple off days this coming week means the Braves won’t have to carry a fifth starter for a while anyways.
