For the Braves’ rubber game against the Cubs, they turn to Bryse Wilson to start against Kyle Hendricks on Sunday evening. This will be Bryse’s first start of the 2021 season and, given all of the current turmoil in the Braves’ rotation, this could be a real opportunity for him to elevate his status on the Braves’ roster.
Coming out of spring training, it was thought that Bryse would most certainly a guy the Braves could/would turn to for early season starts. Aside from the memories of Wilson outpitching Clayton Kershaw in the NLCS last year (shoutout to anyone who put money on that happening), Wilson outpitched Kyle Wright this spring and appears to have some measure of faith put in him by the organization. With so many of the Braves’ rotation arms out, having Bryse available to call up and pitch today on regular rest is certainly a nice luxury to have. Him putting together a strong start would be even better.
The Braves will look to get some semblance of consistency on offense which, even if the Cubs’ best pitcher wasn’t on the mound, could prove to be tricky. Outside of Ronald Acuna Jr. and Freddie Freeman, the Braves offense has been pretty lacking and guys that they were hoping to get key contributions from like Ozzie Albies and Cristian Pache are banged up.
On the plus side, Acuna Jr. is playing on another level right now and seems to be single-handedly keeping the Braves in games through the first few weeks of the season. He sports a 262(!) wRC+ for the season and is the outright leader or close to it in most offensive categories league-wide right now. The Cubs have been able to keep Ronnie from going yard which is something, but he has still been able to get on base at a high rate this series. Of note, does have a homer against Hendricks in his two at-bats against him in his career.
