The Daily Chop: Astros extend Series to Game 6, Series Shifts Back To Houston, Plus More

Despite a great start. Braves struggle in Game 5.

MLB: World Series-Houston Astros at Atlanta Braves Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

It certainly seemed like it was going to be a Halloween night for the ages.

Adam Duvall’s Grand Slam in the bottom of the first inning seemed like a major opportunity for Atlanta to perhaps cruise to a Game 5 victory.

However, despites Freddie Freeman’s best efforts, blunders and bad luck would not allow Atlanta to hold the lead or experience a World Series clinching victory in at home on Sunday night.

Walks, errors and well placed hits all played a part in the Astros comeback. However, the simple truth is that the Braves made too many mistakes, and a great offense did exactly what it needed to do— it made the most of extra opportunities. The end result is the World Series now shifting back to Houston for Games 6 and 7.

However, despite the disappointment, there are many aspects of the Series that currently favor the Braves. With Max Fried and Ian Anderson going in Games 6 and 7, and Houston using both Framber Valdez and Jose Urquidy in Game 5, the Braves certainly seem to have the advantage when it comes to starting pitching. Furthermore, with Drew Smyly working multiple innings Sunday night, none of Tyler Matzek, Luke Jackson, or Will Smith were used by the Braves in Game 5, meaning all three arms will have multiple days of rest heading into Game 6. Finally, though the Astros had another big game offensively on the road, it is the Braves that seem to be more consistent with their power. That could make a key difference for the Braves on the road in Houston.

Again, while the result on Sunday night certainly was less than ideal, the fact that the Braves seem to have the advantage in multiple ways going into Game 6 on Tuesday is a good position to be in. Despite how the Series has gone, I truly believe anyone would have been fine with this outcome before the Series started, with the Braves roster fully knowing what is at stake and what it will take to get the job done.
