Some signings are happening

Let’s take a quick roundup of baseball signings today:

  • The Phillies signed Archie Bradley to a one-year, $6 million deal. This is notable because he was projected to earn less than this in arbitration, making it the second time in a few days that a player has beat (or likely beat) his would-have-been-but-for-a-nontender salary. Braves fans might remember Bradley from Game 1 of the series against the Reds, as the lone run scored in that game scored off him.
  • The Mets signed Jose Martinez to a $1 million split contract that pays him $225,000 if he stays in the minors all season. Martinez raked in his first 900 PAs as a big leaguer (131 wRC+) but had no defensive home. That meant his value plummeted with an offensively-average 2019, and he was straight-up awful in 98 PAs last season.
  • The Astros signed human game delay Pedro Baez yesterday to a $12.5 million, two-year deal that also includes a team option. This shows that no one is immune from spending money on relievers.

Also, $20 to the person who figures out what the rightmost set of columns here: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings is actually showing. It doesn’t appear to be “working” in the sense of reflecting reality, but it also adjusts up or down over time to account for moves made, so it’s some kind of glance into a mirror dimension.
