The Daily Chop: Another loss to Marlins, Fried placed on IL, Ozuna wins POTW, and more

New, 58 comments

The Braves fell to the Marlins again on Tuesday and placed their ace on the IL. Great.

Losing to the Marlins is bad. Losing your ace is also bad. The Braves did both of those things on Tuesday, which seems bad. Having Max Fried go on the IL is obviously a huge problem for a team that is already thin in the starting rotation, but having Kyle Wright come up to make his audition for the rotation only to get shelled by the Marlins is just awful. The Braves are in desperate need of stability (or ability) within their starting rotation at the moment, and seemingly every exciting option has been a disappointment this season. The argument for allowing the kids to gain experience at the major league level seems valid, but the results have largely been awful aside from two Ian Anderson starts. Hopefully Fried gets healthy, another rookie steps up, and these problems work themselves out over the next month.

Wright struggles, offense falls flat in Braves 8-0 loss to Marlins

The Marlins have outplayed the Braves by a significant margin in this series, which is troubling to say the least. Kyle Wright was not good in this game and the offense was even worse, managing only four hits. Losing streaks are especially costly in a 60-game season, and the Braves are in the midst of one now. Things will need to turn around quickly.

Fried to IL, Culberson DFAed as Wright and Webb return

A busy day on the transaction wire saw the Braves place Fried on the IL, DFA Culberson, and recall Wright and Webb. Finding a silver lining among those moves is tough, especially given the performance that Wright turned in against Miami.

Marcell Ozuna wins National League Player of the Week

The Braves DH/OF was very deservingly awarded the NL POTW on Tuesday after torturing pitchers last week.

While this isn’t a groundbreaking award and is definitely subjective, it was nice to see Ozuna recognized for his strong run of play which has helped the Braves maintain their first place position in the National League East. When a guy posts a 1.674 OPS over the course of a week including a three home run game, he generally has a pretty good case for honors like this.
