It feels like it just got started but the 2020 regular season will wrap up on Sunday when the Atlanta Braves complete a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Atlanta won the series opener on Friday 8-7 in 11 innings before dropping an 8-2 decision Saturday in Tucker Davidson’s debut. The Braves have clinched the No. 2 seed for the MLB Postseason but will have to wait until Sunday’s games are complete to find out who they will face in the Wild Card round.
Bryse Wilson will get the start for Atlanta on Sunday and will be looking to build off of a strong outing last time out. Wilson has spent most of the season at the Braves’ alternate training site but made four relief appearances throughout the regular season. He was called on to start Tuesday and pitched well limiting the Marlins to just three hits, while striking out seven, over five scoreless innings. Wilson needs another good outing to strengthen his case for inclusion on the team’s postseason roster.
Boston will counter with right-hander Nick Pivetta who will be making his second start since joining the Red Sox. Pivetta struggled while with the Phillies in 2020 allowing 10 earned runs in just 5 2/3 innings. Atlanta contributed to those struggles when they tagged Pivetta for six hits and six runs in just a 1/3 of an inning back on August 10. The Phillies traded Pivetta to Boston for reliever Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman in a deal that hasn’t worked out well for Philadelphia. After spending some time at Boston’s alternate site, Pivetta made his Red Sox debut allowing four hits and striking out eight over five scoreless against the Orioles.
The Braves will be without third baseman Austin Riley Sunday as he tends to a sore quad. Brian Snitker told reporters Saturday that the injury isn’t thought to be serious and Riley is expected to be ready to go when the NL Wild Card round begins Wednesday.
First pitch Sunday is scheduled for 3:10 p.m. ET and can be seen on Fox Sports South.
