The Daily Chop: Tucker Davidson to debut, Freddie walks it off

The Braves struggled a bit Friday evening...and then Freddie Freeman saved the day.

With the Braves clinching the division earlier in the week, a lot of the drama was taken out of the team’s final series of the regular season against the Red Sox. The team even took the step to give Freddie Freeman a much deserved day off. However, there was still a baseball game to play.

Unfortunately, it just wasn’t the Braves’ night for the most part. They had one of their nights where they were terrible with runners in scoring position, Mark Melancon did not look great in the 9th, and Chris Martin had a rare off night in relief. However, Freddie Freeman came into the game to restore order as he delivered a walk-off two-run homer to give the Braves an 8-7 win in 11 innings.

The other big positive from the evening, other than the ball that Ronald Acuna Jr. launched into orbit to lead off the game, was the work that Kyle Wright did in his final start of the regular season. Wright was excellent as he pitched 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and three walks....the three walks came all in his last inning of work when it was clear he was worn out. Overall, though, a strong and efficient outing from him.

Nationals sign Dave Martinez to extension, per report

While the Nationals have been one of the league’s bigger disappointments this year, most of that has had to do with injuries and fee agent departures. Manager Davey Martinez has been largely lauded for his work and Washington decided that they wanted to keep him around for a while. This tends to happen when guys win World Series rings.

Marlins clinch postseason spot

2020 is wild. The Marlins cemented their spot in the postseason with a win over the Yankees and with a little help from the Phillies’ bullpen being truly terrible.

Reds are headed to the postseason as well

This next one is particularly relevant to Braves fans as not only are the Reds a likely opponent in the first round of the playoff for Atlanta, but they are also a team that no one is excited to face in a short series with their pitching staff.
