This Day in Braves History: September 25

1964 - Joe Torre puts together a monster night in a doubleheader win against the Phillies. Torre records two triples and drives in three runs in a 5-3 win in Game 1. Torre adds three more hits, including a 10th inning home run, in the second game. The Braves win Game 2, 7-5.

1979 - Brothers Mickey Mahler and Rick Mahler both pitch in an 8-0 loss to the Astros. It is the most recent instance of brothers pitching for the same team in the same game.

2000 - Tom Glavine and the Braves defeat the Expos 6-0. The victory is Glavine’s 20th of the season. It is the fifth time in his career that he has won at least 20 games in a season.

2002 - Andruw Jones launches three home runs in a 7-1 win over the Phillies.

2012 - Freddie Freeman hits a game-winning two-run homer off of Mike Dunn to give the Braves a 4-3 win over the Marlins. The victory clinches a wild card spot for Atlanta. The game is also the 22nd consecutive start by Kris Medlen that the Braves have won, matching the record set by Hall of Fame pitchers Carl Hubbell and Whitey Ford.

2013 - The game between the Braves and Brewers features a bench-clearing brawl as Carlos Gomez homers off of Paul Maholm and words are exchanged and Brian McCann blocks him from reaching home plate during his home run trot. Gomez, Freddie Freeman and Gerald Laird will all be ejected from the game. Atlanta goes on to lose the game 4-0.

2016 - The scheduled game between the Braves and Marlins is cancelled after Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez dies tragically in a boating accident.

One year ago - Dansby Swanson and Josh Donaldson combine for seven hits and six RBI as the Braves defeat the Royals 10-2.

Five years ago - The Braves fall to the Marlins 12-11 at Marlins Park. Freddie Freeman, Hector Olivera and Michael Bourn all finish with three hits each but Ryan Weber allows nine hits and seven runs in just two innings. Jose Fernandez picks up the win for Miami despite allowing nine hits and six runs in just five innings.

Ten years ago - Alex Gonzalez homers to help the Atlanta Braves to a 5-0 win over the Nationals. Derek Lowe tosses five scoreless innings to pick up the victory for Atlanta.
