This Day in Braves History: September 21
1919 - The Cubs beat the Braves 3-0 in just 58 minutes.
1947 - Warren Spahn shuts down the Dodgers 4-0 to record his 20th win of the season.
1950 - Warren Spahn records win No. 21 with a two-hit shutout over the Cardinals.
1958 - The Braves clinch their second straight pennant defeating the Redlegs, 6-5. Warren Spahn records his 21st win of the season.
1959 - Warren Spahn again records his 20th win and his 266th NL victory to tie Eppa Rixey for most career wins by a left handed pitcher.
1970 - The Braves trade Hoyt Wilhelm to the Cubs but will reacquire him in a trade in December.
1988 - Astros righty Bob Knepper tosses a one-hitter beating the Braves 1-0. Pete Smith throws a complete game for Atlanta. The Braves’ only hit was a Dale Murphy single in the second inning.
1993 - Atlanta blows out the Expos 18-5 stopping a stretch of 19 wins in their last 22 games for Montreal. The two teams combine to use a record 13 pinch hitters.
1997 - Denny Neagle retires the first 12 batters he faces but later allows back-to-back homers twice in a 7-1 loss to the Expos. Rondell White and Hensley Meulens go deep in the fifth and then David Segui and White turn the trick again in the sixth.
2001 - Baseball returns to New York City for the first time since terrorist attacks on September 11. Mike Piazza blasts a dramatic eighth inning home run to give the Mets a 3-2 win over the Braves.
2003 - Greg Maddux earns his 15th win of the season defeating the Marlins 8-0 and becomes the first pitcher to win at least 15 games in 16 consecutive seasons.
2011 - Leo Nunez pitches the Marlins to a 4-0 win over the Braves but is then placed on the restricted list for the remainder of the season. Nunez had been playing under an assumed identity since being signed as a free agent by Pittsburgh in 2000 and is really Juan Carlos Oviedo who is actually one year older than his listed birthdate.
One year ago - The Braves defeat the Giants 8-1 as Max Fried fires 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Adeiny Hechavarria has two hits while Adam Duvall and Francisco Cervelli both homer in the win.
Five years ago - Shelby Miller loses his 15th straight decision for the Braves in a 4-0 loss to the Mets. It is Miller’s 23rd consecutive start without a win.
Ten years ago - Mike Minor lasts just 2 1/3 innings in a 5-3 loss to the Phillies. Roy Halladay records his 20th win of the season while allowing seven hits and three runs over seven innings. Freddie Freeman hits his first Major League home run off of Halladay in a pinch hit appearance in the seventh inning.
