Something has to change

Robbie Erlin struggled again as a starter for the Atlanta Braves Thursday and once again you are left to wonder just how much longer this can continue. Alex Anthopoulos hinted at the trade deadline that guys like Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson and possibly Mike Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb would be given another opportunity. Wright returned earlier this week and Wilson pitched four good innings in relief in Wednesday’s blowout win over the Marlins. The leash was short for both Foltynewicz and Newcomb in 2020 but the question has to be asked if they could be any worse? If another opportunity isn’t in the cards for either then what about Touki Toussaint who was also banished to the alternate site or even Tucker Davidson?

No offense to Erlin, but the Braves are going anywhere running him out there every fifth day. They’d be better served handing the ball to guys like Folty or Newcomb if for no other reason than to see if they could possibly provide anything in the postseason. If that isn’t an option then I will reiterate my thoughts from the trade deadline. Hand the ball to the young pitchers and see what happens. The bar is low enough and if they struggle the team will at least benefit from giving them experience now.

Tyler Flowers left Thursday’s game early after he was hit by a pitch. He will be reevaluated on Friday.

The Braves placed Tommy Milone on the 10-day injured list due to elbow inflammation on Thursday. Milone has struggled during his stint in Atlanta allowing 16 runs in 9 2/3 innings. The team recalled Huascar Ynoa who in relief of Erlin Thursday night.

MLB Pipeline reached out to each team’s player development staffs and uncovered a prospect for every team that has turned heads at the alternate site. Catcher Shea Langeliers gets the nod for the Braves as he has shown excellent defensive ability and has shown progress at the plate.
