The Daily Chop: The Braves are checking in on starters before the trade deadline to the surprise of no one

The Braves need starters. No one is confused by that. However, they are definitely poking around the free agent market.

The Braves certainly have some needs on their roster, most glaringly in their starting rotation that has been decimated by injuries, opt-outs, and, well, not being good at pitching. Max Fried is firmly in the discussion as a Cy Young candidate and Ian Anderson’s debut was encouraging, but there is still the matter of what to do with the rest of the rotation spots through the rest of the season even IF the Braves think that Cole Hamels can contribute soon.

Well, just in the last 24 hours or so, the Braves have been connected to the Angels’ Dylan Bundy which is a match that makes sense because while the Angels have the best player on planet Earth on their roster, they have underwhelmed in a big way in terms of wins and losses this season. Bundy isn’t a guy that you would normally think would move the needle a ton, but he has actually been quite good for the Angels this year and considering who the Braves have been trotting out for starts, well...his presence would be welcome.

Another name that popped up late on Saturday night was that the Braves are also interested in the Pirates’ Joe Musgrove. Musgrove is dealing with some triceps inflammation, so he isn’t an ideal fit, but the Pirates are definitely a team that you could foresee continuing to sell off pieces of their roster and Musgrove would at least eat some innings which, with the quality of the Braves’ bullpen, may be all the Braves really need.

Braves’ offense goes quiet in 4-1 loss to Phillies

Josh Tomlin probably got left in the game one batter too long which led to a three run homer, but no team is going to win many games scoring just one run. Sadly, that is what the Braves did on Saturday in a disappointing 4-1 loss.

Athletics acquire Tommy La Stella from Angels for Franklin Barreto

If you had Tommy La Stella as the first somewhat high profile name to get traded at the deadline, well you win. La Stella had a bit of a career resurgence in LA and now he takes his talents to Oakland who is dominating at the moment. Franklin Barreto was once a very highly touted prospect but whose shine has come off in recent years.

Padres acquire Trevor Rosenthal from Royals for Edward Olivares and PTBNL

Trevor Rosenthal used to be one of the scariest relievers to face in the entire league before a disaster of a 2019 season ended that mystique in a lot of ways. However, he seemed to find himself against in Kansas City and now heads to the Padres who have one of the best young teams in all of baseball.
