This Day in Braves History: July 3

1914 - The Braves make their second trade in four days acquiring outfielder Josh Devore from the Phillies for infielder Jack Martin. Devore would appear in 51 games for the Braves hitting .227/.327/.281 in 152 plate appearances.

1966 - Tony Cloninger hits two grand slams and drives in nine runs as the Braves defeat the Giants at Candlestick Park, 17-3. Cloninger is the first National League player to hit two grand slams in a game. His nine RBIs are a major-league record for pitchers. Darryl Palmer gave this game a deep dive in Thursday’s throwback column.

1967 - The Braves and Cubs combine for a major-league record five home runs in the first inning of a game at Fulton County Stadium. Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Randy Hundley went deep for the Cubs while Rico Carty and Felipe Alou answered for the Braves in the bottom half of the inning. Carty would add another homer later but Glenn Beckert helps put the game out of reach with a three-run shot to give the Cubs a 12-6 win.

1970 - Mike Lum hits three homers to help the Braves defeat the Padres 8-1. Atlanta will continue to pour it on in Game 2 of the doubleheader winning 9-4.

2001 - The Braves score eight runs in the seventh inning to power their way to a 14-7 win over the Phillies. Chipper Jones goes 4-for-4 in the game and scores five runs.

2012 - 40-year old Chipper Jones is named to the NL All-Star team as an injury replacement for Matt Kemp. He celebrates by going 5-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs in a 10-3 win over the Cubs.

2016 - Major League Baseball celebrates military appreciation day by staging a game at Fort Bragg in North Carolina between the Marlins and the Braves. Miami defeats Atlanta 5-2 in a temporary 12,500 seat ballpark with no paid admission as all spectators are active military members and their families. It is the first major league game ever played in the state of North Carolina. Here is a link to all of our coverage of the historic Fort Bragg game.
