Awards week for the Baseball Writer’s Association of America continued Tuesday night with the announcement of the winners of the Manager of the Year Award.
For the National League, Miami’s Don Mattingly, Chicago’s David Ross and San Diego’s Jayce Tingler were named as finalists with Mattingly taking home the award. Mattingly captured 20 first place votes after helping guide the Marlins to a 31-29 record while dealing with a number of COVID related issues. Miami made the postseason for the first time since 2003.
Tingler captured six first place votes and finished second with Ross coming in third. Braves manager Brian Snitker finished fourth garnering one first place vote, two second place and five third place votes.
In the American League, Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash, former White Sox manager Rick Renteria and Toronto’s Charlie Montoyo were announced as finalists for the award. After finishing in the top three for three straight seasons, Cash finally broke through after guiding the Rays to a 40-20 record, an AL East title and a trip to the World Series. Cash captured 22 first place votes and was followed by Renteria with five and Montoya with two.
Awards will will continue Wednesday with the announcement of the Cy Young Award.
