There will be some excitement in Atlanta today for sure as Dallas Keuchel and Trevor Bauer prepare to battle. This will be Bauer’s first start with the Reds and also his first start since his less than tasteful comments about the Braves offense after his last start against Atlanta.
Bauer had his first elite season last year when he posted a 2.21 ERA worth 5.8 fWAR. This season he has been good, but still far from his production level of the 2018 season.
Bauer currently sports a 3.79 ERA which is still very good over 156.2 innings. His walks have spiked this year to 3.62 per nine innings and he’s also allowing a decent amount of home runs (1.26 per nine).
The Reds gave up quite a bit to get Bauer as they traded away top prospect Taylor Trammell to San Diego in the three team deal, and Yasiel Puig to the Indians. So we will see if this gamble pays off for the Reds who are not in contention this season, but will have Bauer next season as well.
Dallas Keuchel has been a breath of fresh air for the Braves in his first 49 innings of this season. After signing in early June with Atlanta Keuchel has posted a 3.86 ERA.
While the sample size is a small one right now with the Braves you can definitely tell that Keuchel is still the same guy he has been his entire career, showing no ill effects of starting the season over a month late.
Keuchel is only signed for the rest of this season, but is quickly becoming a fan favorite and could be showcasing to Alex Anthopoulos and co. why he deserves another contract beyond this season much like Josh Donaldson has done.
This will be Keuchel’s first look at the Reds this season and that should give him a slight advantage.
Today is the battle of two long-time AL pitchers against NL lineups and it should be a real treat to watch. Stay tuned.
