The Braves will be looking for some better luck this evening when they face the Dodgers after an 8-3 loss in game one. Atlanta will have a tough go of it with Cy Young candidate Hyun-Jin Ryu on the mound, but anything is possible in baseball.
The home-standing Braves will send Mike Foltynewicz to the mound tonight. “Folty” is coming off of a decent start against the Marlins as he pitched six innings of four run baseball. Folty has been especially encouraging in the swing-and-miss department since returning from AAA earlier this month. The big right hander has struck out 14 batters in 11.1 innings since returning, and Atlanta will surely love to see him post a big strikeout number this evening.
For the Dodgers, Hyun-Jin Ryu has been as steady as they come this season. The left-hander owns a 1.45 ERA (Yes, you’re reading that correctly) and 2.86 FIP. It’s hard to say how best to attack Ryu because he doesn’t walk people, but he also isn’t a “strikeout pitcher” per se. Ryu wants batter to hit balls into the ground all day long, and most times they oblige as indicated by his 51% ground ball rate.
The one saving grace for Atlanta is that Ryu could begin to tire. He hasn’t been over 150 innings pitched since 2014 as he’s dealt with a flurry of injuries. Ryu is also due for some regression as he currently sports a really unsustainable near 90% strand rate of baserunners.
We will see if Atlanta can deliver against one of, if not the, toughest pitchers in baseball today. Stay tuned.
